I feel like the fact that you don’t just buy every new release, and only things you covet, makes the reviews you do much better and more impactful. The way you describe your relationship with makeup sounds poetic at times. New sub and happy I found your channel.

I wish influencers would do more reviews on older releases! Sometimes thoughts change, new products come out you can compare them too, and quite honestly, some older releases are just BOMB!!! We are so use to new things left right and center that it's nice to just enjoy something we may already own and revisit our collections!

Additionally, when I personally am looking to buy something I form the idea of the type of thing I want before I start looking at products, not the other way around, and just statistically, odds are the best thing for me will not be the the latest release. Most products I buy have been out for a good long while and I find it refreshing to see someone online exhibiting a bit of that behavior as well

@@BeautyBeatdown I never thought about it that way but I have to agree! Things come out so quickly (thinking colourpop) that a week later we refer to it as an old release. It’s so quick it’s almost as if you don’t even have time to enjoy the newness before it’s “outdated.” The more I think about this the more infuriated I feel!

Me too but I understand why they don't. The older release videos don't do well which not only makes less money for them, a video with a lot less views can hurt them in the algorithm with future videos. But I do agree I always like to see the opinion of certain creators on older things.

In case you didn't know, the smoother textured special eye shadows are meant to be used wet to get maximum impact. If you use either water or a mixing medium and create a slurry with the shadow, it looks like molten metal. You can also use a glitter glue to help them stand out ;)

  • @supernouveaux
    @supernouveaux Před 2 lety +185

Let me help. First I want to point out this colour story is very similar to your beloved Flower Beauty Jungle Lights palette and can absolutely be used in the same way you use that one. Second Jubilee can be used all over the lid, BUT like a majority of the "blitz-astral" shades can be patted on top as sort of a glitter topper. I know in the pan Jubilee is much smoother than Astral Solstice, but you absolutely can use it in the same way, which I take advantage of all the time. I basically just press my finger into the pan (not rub, just press) and then pat whatever is on my finger all over the lid and onto my brow bone like you would with the topper from TF Naked Bronze or with Cava. You may need to repeat that process a few times to build up the shine, but it will look like you took either of those toppers you love and pressed them all over your lid and brow bone.
I also want to point out, as the artist in me, is dying over the mattes she chose for the palette, which are basically a Zorn palette. In painting, those 3 colours + white (for opaque paints) are a very old tried and true limited palette for mixing skin tones that originated during the renaissance and it just gives me all the feels. Even the red is named after vermillion which is/was a super popular warm red paint used in the zorn palette. This entire palette just speaks to my love of renaissance paintings and the art revival during that era as an artist and it makes this entire colour story so beautiful and inspired to me.

I adore the gold in this palette! Its actually my favorite color in this palette. Not because i really like yellow golds, but because of how much it serves me while creating looks, which I think is very related with my coloring. It layers so beautifully over the copper, green, champagne, and the bronze to add brightness, warmth, and dimension, and is what I use when I create a halo eye. I know people love to do that with Astral solstice, but for me and my skintone, Astral solstice is just a lil to stark i think. But for my olivey skintone, the gold does such a lovely job warming up my any shade to compliment me.

Personally I think the weakness of the outer packaging is a fair criticism. Sometimes they arrive a little beat up. The palette is so heavy that the cardboard gets a beating in transit, and while I get it's literally a box for the palette to arrive in, Pat knows we all keep them! The artwork is really pretty and if you have more than one palette, it helps to immediately differentiate between them. I feel like it couldn't be that much of a cost burden to make them just a wee bit thicker.

I think my upper limit for palettes is about £40-45, and (while I learned the hard way) it does really lessen the pull of high end palettes and help me make better choices.
Wish more videos about these kinds of palettes had discussion about the real cost like yours 🙂

I was sorely dissapointed in the Red shade .....the amount it infinitely creased on me...so I was really turned off from it....but having it for about almost 2 years ....i feel her pallets are good as an everyday look ....intricate but looking neutral...special but normal...looks are not out of the ordinary..... so to sum up my TED talk....u only need only 1 colored product sure it as bronzer blush and eyeshadow...it will serve it's purpose well and I did not accumulate random makeup....but I'm saying this as I have tried to get other makeup to make-up for the fact that i wanted to get something that doesn't crease...lol no luck there yet

I think Pat Mcgrath would love this review. I myself am so incredibly pleased with your review of this palette. My collection of eyeshadows now pretty much only consists of pat mcgrath palettes and Natasha Denona. I buy (or am gifted) every eyeshadow palette that Pat releases, and a lot of ND. This made me think much more about the eyeshadows, because I pretty much take it for granted because I don't use anything else. You've brought back a lot of the joy of the experience of her eyeshadows, which is why I fell in love with them in the first place. I love the way you think about deep skin tones, too. I personally *love* the copper, and I thought it was so funny that you felt the camel matte and the bronze were a bit warm, because they are cool toned on my complexion. And when I first got it I thought to myself, these colors aren't so different from other palettes I can find, why did I do this. But over the time I've had it I found it's my one palette I always go to when I need to look put together, want that punch without the super vibrant colors I often go for, be it for work or weddings or something like that, or just want something easy and no fuss. I have to say out of all of the eye shadow I own it is the easiest for me to use they blend themselves and lend themselves to a one color look if I don't want to put a lot of effort in. Idk, I just think it's a stand out star in my collection even though I have palettes with crazy color stories or unbelievable shifts. I''m really glad I purchased it. I'm not jumping to go out and purchase more, but I am so satisfied I bought the one I have. There is also a topper shiny shade in the "special shade" section that makes any shadow I put it on top of look wet which I love! lol

I’m so glad you finally purchased a PMG palette! It’s difficult to explain how beautiful her shades are - I also have some indie shadows that are great but they’re not even close to her formulas. Her formulas are so rich but easy to blend, and patting the special shades over anything just takes them to another level. I feel like the indie shades take over if you try that, hers enhance but don’t overwhelm. They also last much longer. I’ve always wanted this palette, I have the two divine rose palettes and they’re so beautiful.
Her VR Sextraterrestrial is the best mutichrome green to pink that I have - and I have several indies. Easiest to apply. Strong flip. Lasts the longest.

Im so happy this is your first voyage into pat McGrath! I have all of them now but this one is my most used and the one I recommend the most for people because of the color story; with one or two shades you can make an infinite number of looks in so many different ways. It also has the widest selection of finishes in pats line compared to the other mothership pallets. Thank you so much for taking the time to review this so thoroughly! 🥰🥰

Love seeing how you would set up looks with this. I think I would put that yellowy gold with the green. That's usually how I set up green eyes - put them on the mid & outer lid, then blend them into a yellow/green gold on the inner corner. It's all about taste, though. You'll figure out how you like it best. 💛
Also - I really enjoyed this video! Thanks for being so thorough & honest, Hannah! You're definitely one of my favorite reviewers!

I thought that an hour long review on one palette would be excessive but I clicked anyway because you’re awesome. I watched every minute of that review. You discuss concepts that no one else goes over. It made me reignite my love for my Midnight Sun palette. Your whole perspective on her matte like metallics was so interesting. And on a side note, I use a light layer of Jubilee to jazz up the green shade just a smidge.

Interesting to hear your struggle with the color story. For me, whenever I see a green and a gold in the same palette, my first impulse is a green and gold look. I’d make a green, deep brown, and gold trio I think. I wish it was a magnetic palette like a ND one, because I think you’d find so much joy if you could deconstruct the palette and see them in different combos or mixed with your singles. ❤️

This review is so incredibly useful. I also picked this pallete as my one mothership palette this fall (actually found quite a few you tubers where it was #1 or #2). I definitely love it and its grungy-halloweenesque color scheme but I think I approach eyeshadow similarly to you, so hearing how you use these more with brushes and use skin show moon glow as your blending shade is sooooooo great! Maybe it’s a niche group of us that needed this review but we are a grateful group :).

You are SPOT on about that astral solstice shade! It IS the most amazing shade/formula of any other shadow in my collection and I own every single mothership she has come out with. That one is SPECIAL! And also the order of your favorites for the special shades in midnight sun is also my order of favorites too! Midnight sun was my first mothership palette I ever bought bc that color story spoke to me the most. I will say if you ever decide to get another one, mothership V or bronze seduction is right up there with this one in terms of special shades and versatility. You will not be disappointed. It will exceed your expectations. Particularly the astral Luna gold shade! I could go on but I’ll spare you the novel I could write lol. Love this video and the in depth review. I’ve never heard anyone on CZcams describe what Pat McGrath’s shadows truly are and how they are different from the rest on the market.

Thank you so much for this review! Of all the Pat McGrath palettes, this one has always spoken to me. I have found over the years that I only like to use 1-2 shades on my eyes because more than that is so much work, and with my monolid eyes, all the work gets covered up. This sounds like it really would be everything I want in a palette, with all my favorite colors to choose from! This is going on my Christmas wishlist for sure! Also, your swatches and close ups and the shadow pairing swatches were VERY helpful. And I feel like your color was more true than other reviews I’ve seen, and compared to when I’ve swatched this palette in store. THANK YOU! Amazing content, per usual :)

The skinshow shades have surprised me over time by being some of my most used, versatile shades. She has one in each mothership palette and I think they are a bit of a different formula. They’re pretty sheer, and I’ve noticed in reviews that people with a wide range of skin tones can use them effectively in similar ways.
I’m so excited to finally see this review of a Mothership palette and I’m looking forward to future thoughts and comparisons. Midnight Sun is in my top three most used Motherships (I have them all) and I find it has the most intriguing color story of my top three. My other two are Subliminal and Divine Rose I. Astral Solstice is definitely my favorite astral formula shade.
Also, I always use jubilee as a topper when I want a more gold toned sparkle instead of the white gold of solstice, rather than building it to full opacity.

It’s interesting that your final thoughts reflect the way you went about choosing the palette: your critique revolves around the fact that the shadows are nice in isolation but not inspiring as a whole, and your reasons for choosing it were based around the colours individually or in small groups. To me it felt like maybe because it was such a big investment you were being ‘sensible’ and ‘logical’ and consciously disregarding the less tangible benefits of inspiration?

I own mothership 3, and 5-9. You described my feelings on the mothership palettes, perfectly. The formulas are perfection. Absolutely amazing. But the color stories never fully made sense to me. I always felt like there was a shade or 2 that were off. Until I started to use the shimmers/special shades in the crease and got more creative. Then it took my love to another level. Only palette I have difficulty with is divine rose 1. It’s just way too cool/mauvey for my extremely warm skin. Which is also funny, that mid tone camel shade pulls cool on me.

Ahhh. This is the mothership I have been contemplating. I have Bronze Seduction. I love it. I personally find Pat McGrath worth the price because I have decluttered so many palettes over the years that make me wish I had just purchased a mothership. I've become so picky about eyeshadow. It has to really wow me to purchase. I covet the amazing singles I have accumulated over time but the gritty texture is my favorite. That formula stays so well on my eyes. Just the lush b-roll, your precision prose on the nuances of color and texture, the State of Desire, and the care that you put into choosing this palette for both review and for yourself... and the fact that this sort of video is almost designed to not be popular on youtube. I got number 3 (I think?), the one with the green special shade, the Sublime, and the 6 (i think?), the Divine Rose. They are giving me way more additional marginal happiness than any other brand's eyeshadows can at this point, considering the sizable collection I already own.

What shocked me most and was most unexpected about her formula is: for most of my other stand out formulas, such as Natasha, to have such pigmentation (whilst being smooth & not choppy), it takes a fairly thick/creamy formula. Whereas, with the PM formula in general (from astrals to mattes), you get the same non-patchy high pigmentation, but in a very thin layer. You can then build them to increase depth and opaqueness; however, you don't have to build in order to have a smooth application of pigment. This is what makes the overall eye look (in my opinion on a 42 year old eye area) so unique to other luxury/excellent performing shadows. I am using FAR less product to achieve the same level of coverage and shading. It just stays so thin, even after layering shades upon shades, formulas upon different formulas. Swatch for swatch/gram for gram compared to others, I will get double if not more uses from the PM shadows.... that alone justifies the price for me - or at least doesn't offend me now, as it once did.

I agonized over which mothership to buy as my first one and I ended up ordering Midnight Sun during the Sephora sale! I was afraid to get it because not many CZcamsrs were excited by the color story but I chose it because I thought that I would get the most use out of this one. If I’m going to spend over $100 on a palette, I should want to go back to it regularly to use it right? Lol well, I just received it today and I am absolutely in love! My favorite shadow is the super shiny bottom right. 😍 I have never been a glitter gal but there is something about that one that is just SO GOOD. I also love the purple one. I’m not super into purple but that one has just enough blue to it to draw me in! I was also surprised by how well the special shades applied with a brush! I was thoroughly expecting to always have to use my fingers but I’m happy that they work with a brush as well. All in all, I’m very happy with my purchase and have no regrets.
