Using meat from a whitetail deer I harvested with my bow, I make deer meat pie in the primitive earthen oven that I made with clay cob. Meat pie baked with the spices that I used is a traditional Quebec French recipe that dates back hundreds of years and was common in my family as my grandmother (my dad's mother) was French and lived on the the east coast of Canada. It is called "tourtiere" or "tortiere", named after the cooking vessel that it was baked in. Before bed in the log cabin, I open up the book that I learned how to play the banjo from when I was a kid and I start from page one, practicing cords and finger picking to see if I can get back to where I left off 30 years ago. I played banjo and guitar for about 7 years each when I was young. I played the guitar on and off over the years, but I haven't picked up the banjo in far too long to remember much of what I learned.
The recipe for the tourtiere filling is as follows, although I made a lot of changes to suit my taste and availability of ingredients.
2 lbs venison, 1 cup of bread crumbs, 2 mushrooms, 1 onion, 1 bud of garlic, fresh sage, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, pepper, 3 cloves. Cook the meat thoroughly first and then put it in the pie crust and bake until the crust is golden.

That's my idea of heaven 😀 sitting by the fire in a log cabin while it's pouring down. Then the Christmas fragrance of your pie absolute bliss.
Eight-legged protein... Go for it! "Belch" Thanks for the extra videos. All the hard work is appreciated.
I've had a horrible week, but your videos have helped me feel a bit better. Needed to see peace, beauty and someone who overcomes obstacles and setbacks. Thankyou Shawn and of course Cali. ❤
thumbs up for the banjo music
Normally you can't taste the spider...but it adds something special.
lol that made me laugh, but just think about the unknown stuff in fast food, a spider sounds good.

In my years in the Army I went to the field a lot but never ever I pay attention to the silence. Years later and specifically after huracan Maria and your videos I learn to enjoy the sound of silence. Beautiful video. Thank you for sharing.
i spent more time behind enemy lines than in front ... i loved the silence ... I knew i was safe when it was quiet ;) Sniper ... back in the desert storm era among other places
Curious. I see you use very few wooden spoons and forks.
What you say about the Army and learning life from different views. I became an LPN in the Army directly after High School Graduation as a way to hold on to my Grandfather, who served in WWII as a Medic. (I Lost him when I was 15 y/o, he had a Heart Attack that took his Life, while he was using the restroom.) To never get to say "I Love you and Good Bye" This kind of pain ingraines into your brain! So, my greatest memories of him as a child was him making fires for the "all day family cook outs" and evening fires in his famous indoor stone fireplace. So back to the Army, what a let down when you know there will be NO evening fires in the field and learning what light discipline really means...what a Bummer!!! Like Yeah, "This is not what I had in mind!" Love you Veterans, esp when we go through those moments when No one can understand!
@@0623kaboom You Rock, Thank you for your steady hand and amazing bravery!

So many memories. Thank you for being such a dedicated person. Thus far you have touched the lives of thousand souls for the better man of true venture on nature. Thank you again and the Mrs. and Calli.
if you taught me one thing from your channel is never quit reach for your goals , keep strumming till you get it right...Amen to that .
These videos really cheer me up 😊👍 thanks Shawn
Yeah I love these videos too ♥
I know it's inappropriate but they make me want to snuggle...reckon his wife would mind ? Yeah , she probably would . Dang it !
Seriously love just relaxing with these videos. My mood is greatly enhanced. Thank you so much Shawn!
Thanks for playing the banjo.
yes, how about an encore, once you get the cramps out :)
My Canadian neighbor makes one with similar ingredients. However, after grinding the meat through the 3/8" plate, he runs it all through the 1/8" plate with all the vegetables and spices. Almost looks extruded. He only makes it once a year, and always shares a pie with me. It's delicious and I look forward to it every year. Thanks for sharing.
Throughout the Summer, as your various projects have taken shape, I’ve thought your cabin site quite beautiful, but man, oh man, does it ever shine in Fall! The golden light, orange and red leaves and your cabin’s exterior wall colors and handsome design really come together as a beauty of a site!
winter is coming .. it gets even better ...
DEER PIE, CABIN IN THE WOODS AND REAL MAN. GOD, GIVE ME MY DREAM.
Catherine Moore x
My son's grandparents were Canadian and taught me how to make that but with potatoes in it ... we would have it on Christmas Eve ...very yummy
This video, plus all the others makes me long for country life, most of my homes had wood heat, cooking, growing, canning, is so rewarding not to mention healther. My children have memories of the warm fire, the power going out from weather and storms. Cooking on the stove, sledding and snow ball fights. Doing chores, chopping firewood, feeding the animals. Thanks for the reminder of what is important, faith, friends, and fun (and good old hard work make for a good night sleep.
Your videos are the only ones I automatically like and comment on. Love the content and really everything about these videos.
Also! Would like to hear your progression on the banjo as you continue to practice. Thanks, Shawn!
Mouth watering, thanks! It's great to see a new video from you as I'm enjoying a day off as my car is in for service. But now I'm hungry hehe.
Don't stop with the banjo!! Everything is a work in progress, that is one of the reasons we come here!
You're making humanity great again.Thank you for sharing what's really matters in life with us..
I was thinking maybe it is time for bed, but then you posted this work of art. Nice :)
You been and gone and done it again, cooking just as it is lunch time here in France, just eating a plain baguette with cheese nothing to compare with your pie, looks lovely
🎵😍 Nice video Merychrismax Primitive oven and food Deliciuos 🍵☕💖
I enjoy your videos so much. I try and envision myself back in the quiet woods. I especially enjoy the cozy cabin times when you are reading and being warmed by the fire. Thanks Shawn!
If this video calms, soothes and inspires me before bed, imagine what being actually living in the forest must be like. Great timing again, thanks for sharing.
I've been watching you since your first video. Your expertise and knowledge and downright stamina are entertaining to watch.
I've noticed you're trying to increase the production value of your videos, and i say good for you. but a personal request. don't get TOO commercial or it eats away at what makes your videos good. the simplicity and the satisfaction you must feel accomplishing what you do, a simple homespun quality, would suffer from this as well.
You show what one person can accomplish. It's one thing to look at the finished product and have someone say " I built that", but to actually see it done was fun to watch. Plus you also don't bore the viewer with things like sawing a log. You show the beginning and the ending. Bravo.
Look forward to many more videos. Enjoy your world. You built it with your bare hands. May you live to be 100. Peace
Although, I wouldn't mind a three minute intro with vocals by Geddy Lee of Rush.
I too love his videos. He is a work horse that's for sure, but one thing I noticed is he rounds his days off, has an equal balance for everything he enjoys doing. He is one of my idols and just as you stated I hope he never goes commercial too far. I just can't imagine it taking place though, he is just too down to earth.
Steve Walker What do you mean by “don’t go commercial “?
I agree Steve. I like that he doesn't have that same weird sounding music crap that a lot of videos have and he isn't constantly talking, especially talking so fast you can't check all the words!!!
Mindy Vaughn things like flashy video effects or singing and stuff like that.
thumbs up is pressed, time to watch the video
I thumb up right away too, like a "ticket" in for the show. And, when a commercial comes in, I let it play for at least 31 seconds (while I read comments .. ;).
This guy is so brilliant and inspirational, he deserves from us minimally the LEAST we can do for him, right?
I'm in the habit of giving thumbs up before watching video's from the channels I subscribe to - I never thought about the importance of this before but it does help to support the channel
Warren, kudos! From what I understand the channels benefit from the thumb ups, from letting the commercials play (at least 31 sec) and from our commenting, sharing, etc.
Nothing better than sitting with a book at the end of a long day, with a tired dog curled up at your feet. Perfection.
Man, natural craftsmanship! How could anybody not find this fascinating? Thanks for letting us watch you work!
What a nice ending to your day with rain and a nice fire :)
THANK YOU FOR SHOWING US THIS, I'M GOING TO TRY THIS LOVE DEAR MEAT, LOVE AND PRAYERS FROM INDIANA USA
Thank You once again Shawn. I really enjoy watching you & Cali. You are doing a FINE Job!!! Keep the vids coming Please!!
There's something so relaxing watching you do your thing.
1 small spider LOL
Ha! I saw that, too :-)
With legs or without? I dont like these hairy spider legs.
So glad I stumbled upon your site, I am living my dream through your reality, and for that I thank you... Absolutely beautiful just the way God intended... In my opinion 😃
Do it also yourself, or at least try to hike and tent in the woods, once in a while .. roast something over a fire .. recharge to the next level!
I loved this one. That rain towards the end and the fireplace gave me such a pleasant feeling...
Never a bad video, I am 67 and disabled and I very much enjoy your way of life ! I should have enjoyed life in simpler times, so I live it through you ! Thanks
Make a fat boy hungry, looked great. Going elk camp next week , think I put it on menu . Sure like your place, be safe , stay warm
Shaun, you mentioned Christmas, and at the end of the video had that bit of footage with the sound of the fire in the woodstove. A video idea I had at that moment would be perfect for Christmas: A loop of the woodstove with a fire burning in it, and maybe you playing some Christmas songs in the background on your guitar or banjo. And I saw that meat pie and couldn't help but think it needed some gravy to keep it from being too dry. Guess I'm too used to venison with a low fat content and have had too many potpies that have gravy in them. And scramble in a couple eggs with that pie and you have a perfect breakfast. Here's hoping it's not too bitterly cold a winter for ya this year, and that it doesn't snow too much.
I'm with you on the gravy boat ;) I blame me gran for that ;) and the wood fire for christmas would be nice ... with a nice paired background soundtrack of banjo and guitar ... on occasion through it
.
as for the winter according to the farmers almanac .. plenty of cold and snow is expected this year
I remember my Nana using a mincer just the same, happy memories and I love how Cali is give some of the goodness cooked food as well thanks Shawn another lovely soothing video for the soul;
all videos are so relaxing, very peaceful......thank you
yum looks very nice
Hey Shawn, how about a My Self Reliance Cook Book!
Thinking that as well!
Yes yes cook book would be awesome!!!!! I would definitely buy 1 or 2 for sure!!!!!!!!!!!! Love your videos!!!
agree to that for sure
lol recipes from the cabin ... roughing it in style ;)
.
and yep that would be a good option as well
Damn, I would eat that all day ^^
I love the music at the begining of your video's. The music makes me smile and want to cheer for you, your wife and Cali. Through hard hard work the three of you created the most beautiful, awe inspirig space I've ever seen.
Sitting here watching you make that pie (getting me hungry also), then getting cozy in the evening next to a warm fire, that sir is heaven! Love your video's! Stay warm and keep them coming!!
My Father being a French Canadian from Northern Ontario I grew up with Toutiere Tradionally made at Christmas and usually Pork mmmm mmm mmmmy Mother made the Best! 😜lol
Wow what a difference a few days make, the trees are looking bare but it’s still beautiful
As a recipe man I enjoyed your meat pie Shawn. You may wish to try some duck or goose fat as an experiment vs. the butter once you get the birds in the larder. Your spices are spot on for something I will try. And yes, I have my grandmothers grinder which I have kept all these years for small amounts of meat. Memories are the best.. Thanks for the post
Enjoy the music and never apologize! I’d love to hear more. That was the perfect addition to the cabin... banjos sound best in the woods. Thanks always for these videos and thanks for giving me a lot more confidence to build.
Looks delicious! I miss the venison from my youth. I have wonderful memories of my father walking down our big hill behind our home in Southern Oregon, with a deer draped over his capable shoulders, more deer seasons than not. We all loved the unique flavor and the fact nature provided for us. 🍁🍂🌲
Oooh've been waiting for a new vid!
Can you publish an Off grid cabin cookbook....with recipes for game and fowl??
Mother nature has lots to offer.... Most people don't know where to look. Food shelter entertainment. It's all good. Venison looked great glad the oven is working out. Great video.
There is something so soothing about watching these vids.
I have been watching this channel a long time now and i noticed an interesting thing:the weather and the seasons are exactly the same as here, half around the world.
Where?
Marin Matic Estonia
@@ahti29 Northern Ontario is way colder then Estonia, specialy in the winter. I wish I can visit Estonia one day, rich history and culture.
You've come along way Pilgrim... Put a little gravy in that pie and i think i'd be full on board. But now we all know you just cut that slice for the camera and that thing didnt last till bed time Lol
Lol, and I ate the rest out of the pan
@@MySelfReliance It used to be when you fed farm & field workers, you made enough pies so every man got his own & he ate it right out of the pie plate! lol
Best part about the videos.....Simplicity, small cabin, small outdoor kitchen, etc....
Enjoying your series very much! This episode was great. Good food, and a rainy night by the fire in the cabin. Perfect!
Shawn, those red chairs are going to give you a back problem due to their poor design. My father-in-law was 50 when he built his own cabin with hand tools like yourself. He often talked about Windsor chairs that by design were built in the day for both supportive comfort and time lasting beauty. He read up on their construction and fitted each chair for family members that came to visit. I was amazed when I sat in my chair, it's seat and armrests were molded to my body providing complete back and muscle relaxation. His philosophy of living alone in the woods at his age was to build a step- free habitat to prevent tripping and falling plus staying physically fit with plenty of wood-splitting exercise. He lived this way until his death at 95 years young with no regrets due to his own personal self-reliance.
when you go over the top of the hill it becomes young cuz no one wants to reminded they are on the down slope
+Pedro Abreu not a native speaker but you found the time to correct someone on something you know NOTHING about.... smh
i tried it but its not the same without the small spider
Great little slice of life episode! Thanks for sharing!
Quite simply...I love this! Thank you!
Nothing Aussies luv more than a good meat pie!
Balfours or villies my fellow Aussie mate??
The pie fever is one thing I just cannot understand about aussies after being here for 10 years lol.
@@GeorgeLee85 have you tried the many bakery pies (steak and kidney, pepper steak etc), or only the standard supermaket pies?
@Angus Dewangus Toke me a while to find out what a zipperhead is. Yes I am Asian. But that sounds quite racist, don't you think? I would like to hear some proper words from your mouth rather than some not-so-funny jokes.
@Angus Dewangus sigh. You know, you really should be ashamed of yourself for being so uneducated and dumb, cause I don't think your mom meant to give life to some one like a douchebag.
Can’t help but think of Deliverance when I hear the Banjo🤪🤣

I first saw that movie years ago of course when it first came out. I'm still disturbed by it and never want to watch it again inspite of and because of how well it was done.
Love the sounds. The gentle rain at the end of the video. You plucking away on the banjo. The fire crackling. Simple. Yet, relaxing.
As a vegetarian, I would gently pass on the spider and venison, and go for the veggies, and potatoes in the pie.
I was right with you until you added the cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.... Not something I would have thought of in a meat based pie. But the sage! Oh, yes.
Oh, and I like the flannel throw on top of the pile of pillows for your chair. I'm sure Cali likes it too!
I liked the Deer Meat Pie part of the video. I like the mix of building and cooking that you often have, and I am always ready to hear your insights/reflections about life as well. Thanks again for great videos! My sister watches them as a way to unwind and to enjoy peace and quiet.
Haha! Cali dirtier than a well digger's socks! :)
Hmm...I wonder where she slept that night?
It’s like that almost every day lately. She sleeps on a wool blanket that I shake out.
Ahhh, good times!!
Bret F, the wool blanket that’s on the chair!
It would be nice to add some strong red wine into the mix. With good tannins and oakiness.
hmm interesting option .. perhaps for halloween I will do that for dinner ;)
thanks shawn another relaxing video. love the interior of your cabin
To see you finally being able to relax and enjoy what you’ve built is amazing to see! Meat pie looked so nice btw

As I have said, one man, his own amazing accomplish.Ali is definitely mans best friend. Your an awesome person.
I find spider meat to be pretty stringy, so I prefer it to be in fajitas.
Spider, the other crab meat.
What is spider meat?
Mike Owens, yea, I saw it too. It didn’t have much meat on its legs!
camel spider goes nice over an open fire with mre's ... add's a nice meat flavour to them lol ;)

I love how there is no one talking the whole time. love what you are doing
Man and nature interwoven, the simplicity of life is quite beautiful to observe😊
Mmmmm yum but I prefer elk 👍🏻
Deer Meat? Call it venison! p.s. I love you, your videos, and everything you stand for.
Eric Walker, Deer meat for those who don’t know. Also moose, elk, and caribou are all technically Venison, all being in the deer family.
i just want to say i love this channel.learning sooo much and thank you
A few christmas ago, i was sick of cooking turkey so i decided to make Tourtiere instead. Being we dont normally have beef in our freezer i made it with, deer, elk and pork. It was so good, the pork just added a little more moisture to the game and made it so good. Thanks for your awesome videos and cooking ideas.
When I hear wall street money types ask about how I plan to retire, I show them you're cabin and camp. Who says I need a four bedroom house in the suburbs. Screw that. A cabin, a truck and my dog. Kids can come visit whenever, retirement is MY time.
2 dislikes are vegetarians I guess lol
Your videos go great with morning coffee. I grew up on a farm. This takes me back home. (South western Ontario).
Your culinary abilities amaze me Shawn. You prepare your meals like you were trained at a chef school. My hunger pangs start up every time you prepare food, (although I think I will give venison, bear and moose a miss 😝😆). You do everything with such skill and artistry. You are truly blessed.
Quite sure that recipe would be awful without the spider. :)
