The Shirite district of Kawasaki City is located in Saiwai-ku, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and has an interesting historical background.
    Ancient to Middle Ages
Shirite has been an area where people have lived since ancient times, and archaeological remains have been discovered. The place name Shirite itself can be traced back to the Middle Ages, and although the origin of the name is unclear, it is thought to be related to the shape of the land and the layout of old villages.
    Edo Period
During the Edo Period, Shiritsu Village was an agriculturally active area. Rice and vegetables were produced there because it was close to the Tama River and it was relatively easy to secure water for agriculture. In addition, at that time, Shiritsu was dotted with farmhouses, and the local economy was mainly dependent on agriculture.
    Meiji Period to Taisho Period
After the Meiji Restoration, the Shiritsu area was exposed to the wave of modernization as part of Kawasaki City. With the opening of the railway and industrialization, the economic base of the area gradually shifted from agriculture to industry. In particular, as Kawasaki City as a whole developed into an industrial city, Shiritsu was also influenced by this, and many factories were established there.
    Showa Period to Present Day
During the Showa Period, further urbanization progressed, and development as a residential area also progressed. Due to its convenient transportation, it became popular as a commuting area to Tokyo and Yokohama, and many houses were built.
    Present Day
The current Shiritsu area is an area that combines residential aspects with commercial and industrial aspects. As part of Kawasaki City's Saiwai Ward, the local community is active and a diverse population lives here.
As such, the history of the Shirate district has undergone many changes from ancient times to the present. We can see that the character of the area has changed significantly due to its geographical location and socio-economic changes.
