    Mentioning The Shining is actually quite ironic, considering the books for both were published the same year, (1977,) and the films came out a little over a year apart, (The Amityville Horror - 1979, The Shining - 1980,) only they were opposite each other. The Shining book was published first, but The Amityville Horror movie was released first. I think each took a little inspiration from each other, The Amityville Horror book taking advantage of the massive upsurge in haunting novels, especially with the success of The Shining, then The Shining film taking some inspiration from The Amityville Horror film, albeit both were using a lot of tropes found in other books and films of the time already. Regardless, they are both good on their own merits, but it shows just how much you've grown in your horror knowledge to be able to compare and recognize little things like that that honestly, many big horror fans don't even stop and take the time to appreciate or notice!

    • @xejelah
      @xejelah Před 5 měsíci +1

      I'm not sure about the novel aspect - it was common place for authors to spend over a year or several to write a single book. If they came out the same year, then they were near completion at the same time. Did both of the books feature an ax or did The Shining take some shine from Amity? Still, axes aren't that strange since wood burning was still a common method for heat during winter for that time period.

    • @Murderbits
      @Murderbits Před 3 měsíci

      It's unlikely either took inspiration from either, given they were produced concurrently. The Shining was inspired by King's stay at the Stanley Hotel (Colorado), which is purported to be one of the most haunted places around. While the external shots of the hotel in the film are of Timberline Lodge in Oregon, the story is a fictionalization about the Stanley. The overall concepts of both are, of course, also drastically different. One is about traditional demonic haunting, poltergeists, etc. The other is psychological horror and isolation with threads of family breakdown and alcoholism thrown in.
      They're both certainly products of the zeitgeist of the times, though it's pretty clear that The Shining remains outstandingly relevant to this day. Plus, The Shining had the benefit of Stephen King and Stanley fucking Kubrick.
      BUT... that isn't to say that Stuart Rosenberg isn't amazing. While Amityville doesn't hold up today and didn't have the benefit of a better writer, Rosenberg also directed Cool Hand Luke the decade prior -- which is not only still relevant today, but is one of the unquestionably greatest films in the history of the medium.

    The books and films came out at nearly the same time, but Stephen King's story was inspired by his stay at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park Colorado (though in the film, they use the exterior of Timberline Lodge in Oregon to depict the Stanley Hotel in Colorado -- a real and supposedly extremely haunted hotel).
    Amityville Horror and The Shining (the books) were both written in 1977. The Amityville film came out in 1979 and the Shining came out in 1980, so both the books and the films were created and put out concurrent to each other. However, the events of Amityville Horror took place in November 1974 (That is when Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed his entire family in that house) and December 1975 (that's when the Lutz's moved into the house, where they lived for 28 days). It should be noted that the Lutzes did not directly write the book, though. A publisher heard about their story and connected them to Jay Ansen. They gave him like 50 hours worth of tape recordeings of them recalling their experiences which he used for the book.
    As to waht happened to the people in the story? Well, since this is a dramatization of the book and the book is a dramatization of the real purported events, who can be entirely certain? However, Father Pecoraro (Mancuso in the story) said in an affidavit from a lawsuit in the late 70s that his ONLY connection with the Lutzes had been by telephone. Other claims said he did go to the home, but nothing happened. But then many years later, he claimed he DID go into the home and was slapped by a ghost that told him to "get out".
    Most of the other accounts are obviously bullshit, too. For example, the next peopel who bought the house in March of 1977 claimed that there were no signs of damage int he house nor any items that had recently been replaced (despite the claim that doors and doorknobs and handles and other things had been destroyed during the orddeal, later being replaced).
    Basically, the entire thing is both one of the most infamous hauntings in history and one of the biggest and widest known frauds. There are countless conflicts with what the Lutzes claimed happened and other people involved. On top of that, TONS of people have lived int he house since they moved out and NONE of them hav ANY experiences whatsoever to report. Still, it has somehow wound up with like half a dozen books and almost 40 movies.
    The fact that Ed and Lorraine Warren got involved, of course, didnt' help. They're two of the biggest paranormal grifter types (I'm sure you've seen the movies about them, already). They drew a lot of attention to the story.

    Hi Kat!
    You are spot on about this movie ripping off popular at the time movie franchises! The original author of the book, Jay Anson,, sexed up the story as much as possible, but most of the details don't match participants memories or official records. The Priest who visited did not come down with dramatic illness, crash his car, find himself unable to telephone the house, or go blind (!) due to the houses malevolent influence. In fact, after the Lutz's left the house no one who has lived their since has experienced anything "supernatural", nor did anyone prior to the De Feo family who were murdered there. The was no leaking blood or goop reported in the house. Jack Ketchum, driven out of Salem for Satanism, never existed. Weather reports do not match.what the Lutz family clam. The NYPD never visited the house during the Lutz residence. George Lutz comes across as the classic shady guy. A failing businessman, unable to even pay his employees, whose brother in laws wedding caterer's cash mysteriously vanished in his presence - and then stiffed the guy when "paying" by cheque. He definitely could not afford the house at 112 Ocean Avenue, (which is on a corner and much less isolated than it seems in the movie.) Allegedly the Lutz's contrived the whole story "over many bottles of wine" with Ronnie De Feo's lawyer, who was angling for an insanity plea. In short, this whole case is giant nothingburger, but it has spawned 20 movies and gained a place in the international psyche.

    Ronald DeFeo, Jr. went to prison for the murders of his family, and stayed there until he died in early 2021. Over the years, he changed his story about what happened that night almost as often as some people would change their underwear, and the reasons behind the killings still remains unclear. The murders were odd, because every member of the family was found face down and with no signs of a struggle, there was no evidence of any drugs in their systems, and the neighbors stated that they didn’t hear any shots being fired even though the rifle used didn’t show any signs of having any type of suppressor or “silencer”.
    Also, as others have pointed out, the story came under fire almost immediately, and more questions came out over the years to where it’s pretty certain that the story was made up (well, aside from the fact that ghosts aren’t real). Plus, the Warrens have also come under criticism over the years. And, the house has had quite a few other people living in it, and no one has ever claimed that anything paranormal happened to them.
