i would say Ging put his Nen in the tape, not the cassete player, and the Nen took over the player.

Yeah I always assumed that. Not everything is exposition. Killua could easily be wrong about that. Infusing the cassette with Nen make the most sense to me.

i once saw someone in a comment section argue that it's "cruel of *Gon* to not want to see his *real mother*" which is disgusting on like, so many levels lol. like, they said *real mother* which.. i don't think i even need to point out what's wrong with that, and that it's 'cruel of GON'?! as if the child of a parent has some kind of gravity they MUST uphold where they are drawn to their parents, or they're scum. it was super bizarre.
Gon has his own right to choose who he wants to see (though, i personally wouldn't track down Ging except to get him to pay my child support :P) and Mito is his real mom c:

Gon actually doesnt emotionally care about ging either. He just wants to know what's so cool about being a hunter that you would leave your child for it. Even when he meets him we don't see him being emotionally invested towards him. He treats him like any other adult in the series

It still doesn't make sense... For all he knows his mom could be imprisoned or somewhere where she cant reach him.
Meanwhile you can argue that Mito is both Gon's mom and dad, so he has no reason to look for his dad either.
