  • The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is the world's oldest non-dam irrigation system that's still in use. It was built around 256 BC, over 2000 years ago. The system has survived earthquakes, wars, and time. To this day, it helps to make Sichuan province the most agriculturally productive province in China. In this video, I breakdown how the Dujiangyan Irrigation system works.

I found out about this wonderful achievement by Li Bing from reading about Joseph Needham who traveled to China with a team to learn and write about the scientific history of China. Excellent video about it.

Thanks for watching. There's tons of history in China, but a lot of it has be shined up to look new or just forgotten. I recently visited a museum that has a huge collection of artifacts from the oldest known civilization in Sichuan. Stay tuned for that video.

Why this river isn't fierce and thus can not demonstrate vividly how this system works anymore is because there is a big high dam build just 1 hour drive away into the mountain. if you see the height of the dam, people will get a sense why this irrigation system is needed. Zipingpu dam (紫坪铺水坝)czcams.com/video/67isxB5Tlvw/video.html in this video I think it only shows the inner side of the dam because I assure you when i see it myself the outside is easily more than 100 meters high and much narrower and deep for the outer side. this is a controvisial dam, locals outside chengdu doesn't know about it. but it is impressive

No, just the opposite. The apportionment of water throughout the year allows for agricultural irrigation of what was previously flood melt and silting of channels that further impeded agricultural water use.
