  • It's the make you've asked me to review so many times I had to do it for you!
Here I try out the V100 MRPGM vintage lemon drop les paul style guitar with relic work trying to get as close as possible to the 1959 Gibson Les Paul burst owned by Peter Green and Gary Moore that Kirk Hammett of Metalica now owns.
Here's an amazon link for you: amzn.to/2CN34c6
Thanks for watching and take good care folks!
You have but one life - live and enjoy it. Peace :o)

I'm now ready to turn the neck pickup around in my Gibson LP. It might then sound as good as this guitar. All this counterfeit aging doesn't really do anything for me. Personally, I'd rather age a guitar myself, over time, by playing it. My wear patterns and scuffs tell the story of my life and my relationship with the guitar.

It’s a beautiful looking guitar and benefitted from a pro set-up before I took delivery. But boy is it a heavy beast! It looks the part and you can coax some nice tones out of it. A great introduction to an LP style guitar without breaking the bank.

I was lucky enough to have met Peter Green in 2011 where he had long been playing anything but Les Pauls and he didn't want to talk to my friend about Gibsons at all anyway (probably sick of hearing about them!)- in fact he has even been quoted as saying in an interview in 96 that "To me, the Les Paul is something you put in a museum of music..."

Hello, I have the non-disstressed model, and what should I say: it's an awesome guitar. It outbeats my Gibson LP, because of it's pickups as well as the playability. The Vintage has a slimmer neck, very more comfortally to play. So this Vintage guitar is my # 1. I play it with my PRS Sonzera 20W combo.

I have a V100 Black that I got Pre-owned but new (played once by someone who realised guitar was not for him) together with Rowland Cube, case and tuner for £160 which is immaculate and sounds brilliant but I hated because of buzzing tuners. Finally decided to investigate and it turns out central heating had slightly shrunk the headstock causing the collars to be loose in their holes. Quick application of PTFE tape and job done and it is now perfect. A little darker sounding than a Gibson but a real rock guitar up there with the best. Fantastic value.

I have one of these. Got it seven or eight years ago, maybe more. It’s a really nice guitar. But I don’t think mine is as heavy as that one. Will check. It’s been sitting for more than a year as it needs a decent setup and I’ve been too busy. But I must get it done soon.
Overall, I think these models get a good bit more care than some of the other V100s, which I feel have been a little less consistent over the past couple of years. But some of that may be the weight. I have a similar age gold top with P90s and bought one for a friend and theirs was much heavier, as was another one I picked up soon after.
Still, it’s a great guitar and I love the in between sounds, too.

I've one of these before they changed the heel joint and when I compared the two era the original batches weighed more. Mine is too orange which they've since improved, but the newer one I was thinking of getting had shoddy quality control with loose machine heads, the toggle switch had fallen back inside the body (the nut was in the box). I don't believe they spray these and rub them back because the position and shape of the 'wear' are consistently in the same place, so I think they have a template that allows for the bare patches and probably use a fine grit to make it smooth around the edges, so that there's isn't any obviously lines where the lacquer stops. I didn't care for the mismatched knobs so changed them. Interestingly, on mine the hardware (including pickup covers) have a satin appearance, making them seem older and more worn than they obviously are, whereas on yours they appear to look shiny. I love the sound of mine but mine has a very slim neck when I'd have preferred a thicker one, but being naive (and dim) I ordered online and assumed that due to cnc machines they all had the same carve and thickness. The relicing is ok from a distance and doesn't really hold up to close inspection and is quite different to the original 'Greeny Moore,' but the Vintage is a relatively affordable guitar so it's probably not right to expect anything more. I also have the Bonamassa inspired goldtop which has a slightly thicker neck (I really like the out of phase sound in the middle position so simply swapped the earth and hot wires from the neck pickup on this model, thereby creating the distinctive Peter Green sound like the one you're reviewing). Keep up the good work, really enjoy what you do.

    Hi,
I just ordered the Vintage V100 ICON Electric Guitar ~ Distressed Lemon Drop.
I’ve heard the ‘Out Of Phase’ middle pick-up selection on this guitar was achieved by wiring, rather than switching the polarity of the neck pick-up magnet?
    Is this factual?
The guitar hasn’t arrived yet, but when it does I’m considering taking out the magnet at the neck pick-up and putting it back in at a reversed polarity to get closer to Peter Green’s sound.
However, would switching the polarity of the neck pick-up magnet mean that the pick-ups would no longer be ‘Out Of Phase,’ due to the wiring on this guitar?
    Thank you.
    Best,
    Danny

There's a PGM version as well as this MRPGM. Is the difference the relicing only, or is the wiring (out-of-phase, reverse mounted pickup) different too? What does the MR stand for?

Don't let anybody kid you, I own three Vintage brand guitars and they are as good or in some cases better than the major brands. Their only downfall is the cheap pots they put in them but for this price I would expect they had to cut corners somewhere. The Wilkinsin pickups, once connected to a good set of pots, are simply outstanding. For those who don't like the relic job, it's not about the look, it's about the way they feel, broken in... and it's a nice feel for sure.

Paul Cowart I would suggest pulling one of the originals out and measuring the height of it. I really can't remember exactly which one they required. Also be aware that the new pots will most likely require you to enlarge the hole slightly. There is a lot of information on line on how to do this but make sure you use painter's tape on the surface to prevent chipping and use a sharp drill bit. BTW, I installed an Emerson 50's wiring harness in one of mine but was not happy. It was very dark sounding even though the caps should have brightened it up some. You can buy really high-quality CTS pots, paper and oil caps and cloth covered wire for a forth of the price and build your own. Good luck

It's the magnet inside the pickup that's turned around as well for out of phase polarity when using both pickups together. And tbh I didn’t think it even compared to high end Epiphones - I used to own both Slash Rossa Corsa & Joe Bonamassa Gold Top. But if you picked up one of these for nice money and didn’t have a better Les Paul then you might enjoy it
