Tips And Comments:
- Playing Technique:
Played between pickups (double bass parts are played next to the neck) with high strength. Bridge knob at 0
- Gear Sound:
Added some mid high frequencies and treble, not much bass.
- About The Song:
I will upload a lesson that will clear some things about three finger technique. Most of the song has this riff and it will surely consume most of your stamina. Just try to play relaxed. I'm not very good in three fingers myself. Use always your ring finger to start the figure

This song is actually pretty easy by Primus standards
One of the easiest Primus songs requires you to learn 3 finger, that's how you know this shit hurts
HELL YEA
@@adamswing6115 am I the only person who started playing bass with 3 fingers naturally?
@@nepstruesom5100 nah, you're not special :)
@@adamswing6115 i can’t wait 🥲
Baffles my brain every time I realize he's singing and playing this
Parts really not too difficult just really tiring lol
I know, I can play this just fine. Just saying in general what he does not specific to this song.
@@HoffmanHook k
@@johndennison2769 JUST really tiring. Yeah darn aong its soo easy to pull off if only it wasn't so tiring.
@@johndennison2769you have clearly never played tommy the cat before
Man playing Primus REALLY helps your finger game while hitting the sheets.. My woman is so glad I realized how great Primus sucks!
"My woman is so glad I realized how great Primus sucks!" lolol
Mike Harkins you're a legend
Actually, I find the two skills unrelated.
They are. It's a joke that got old ages ago..
Agreed. Vaginas and basses are both played differently.
Les has perfected how to make a bass sound like someone’s gargling water. 😂
I love the smooth way in which the fingers stroke the bass.... I'm so high, I love primus.
You don't have to be high to appreciate the wacky awesomeness that is Primus
Andrew Pappas
You don't, but it helps.
Mich people who "need to be high" to do anything, are losers. if you cant enjoy something without drugs, its probably the drugs that you like, and the subject that you dont
Mich eerily close to my train of thought while watching this, hahaha
JJWP 88 lmao, high does not always mean high on drugs
Oh my god... I was like 'This is going to be really easy!'
And then the intro ended.
Christian Crowle its just triplets
It's an easy song
Álvaro Bass right it's easy. It's amazing that Les sings while playing this, incredible.
its quite easy for a primus song...
The notes of the song itself are relatively simple but technique is hard this song really tries by fingers out when I play it especially the main riff
The world is a much better place because of you and your videos.
That bass line is sick. I love it.
I think Primus is just one of those badass bands that many missed out on because no one can really cover them. The bass and and the voice is just one of a kind. I myself didn't hear about them until early 2000's.
Story behind this song:
Les Claypool wanted all bass-players of the world to play the 32nd-notes as best as possible, so he wrote "the toys go winding down".
That's it
ps:
my source?!
-> and old and wise man with a long white beard..
Hunter S. Thompson that was a beautiful story
I got Undertale vibes for some reason.
Those are triplets...not 32nds
@@TheAcenightcreeper Nah dude, they're definitely 32-notes.
The Nerd of the North it was a joke, they are the same thing...
I've had this song stuck in my head for weeks now because of those triplets. Makes me really regret not playing bass anymore. Good to see I was right about how to play this, you did a damn good job
primus - american life
Ira Etzel not that difficult to be honest.
I think I'm way out of my league. I just bought an epiphone t bird (I know the basics of bass but not experienced) and love this song. It's looks simple but not simple at the same time. I am a very dedicated person so maybe as a first full song this could be quite rewarding to learn.
pretty much everyone out of their league when it comes to Primus bass playing.love the song also. the fingering for the most part is not too complex. the main verse rather simple and later same just octave down. Maybe practice the song first with less picking. hit each note only once instead of each note with a super-fast-triplet to get the musical part down. practise the triplets seperately, then try to combine
Are you still playing?
@@AlexandarShmex He smashed his bass after trying to learn this...
this song makes the tendons in my arms hurt like hell
I hope your tendons are feeling better now 3 years later
@@HonchoHundo XD
It's been 5 years now, so I really hope that your tendons are feeling better by now.
It's been 7 years I hope your tendons are ok
The Triplets go Thumping On!
This song will leave you exhausted.
This is the best cut of this track on CZcams. Maybe the best to be found anywhere. Nicely
Brilliant man, you're awesome! :D
lol, that crossover xddd
By far my favorite primus bass line purely because every time I listened to it I just imagined rocking out with the 3 finger triplets bc I recently unlocked that as part of my vocabulary. This tab is everything I hoped it would be thank you
every time i think of a super gnarly bass song and look to see if no one has done it yet.... you show up. hats off to you bass lord
Spider walk, hand movement required is hypnotic and organic , beautiful really
Nice! I have the same exact bass you do. :) And I saw Primus tonight - inspired to try to play this. Thanks for the video.
That right hand stamina is on point.
Over the Electric Grapevine, by Primus. Thank you for your videos!
love the covers, keep up the great work!
i make the DUMBEST facial expressions trying to play this lol
Michael Roche les claypool: when he doesnt writes an insanely fast slap line he make you end up with fuckin parkinson. i think that les AND this guy from the Channel are the only persons un the world that can play this without losing a finger
Atucha Gaming xLaboratorio de Juegosx
Oh come on, it's really not *that* hard once you're comfortable with the 3-finger technique. Granted it ain't easy, either, buuut...
Now, playing something like Tommy the Cat WHILE singing, THAT would be fucking impossible for anyone but Les claypool I would imagine.
Cmon man, it's not that hard lol. There's at least 10 Primus songs that are more of a challenge on bass.
I've learned so much from this guy
Fun song to play. Great to way to strength that 3rd finger.
First song I'm learning on bass, thanks for the upload. Got everything down till around 2:40.... jesus christ, primus was an ambitious choice for first song. time to retreat in to my appropriate league hahaha
Nice song! I didn't think of requesting this song haven't heard it in a while.
It's not fair that you're that good!
Fair play lad, keep at it!
I just can't stop, I love this video!
Love it!
Watched it about 20 times and now i could find that one note you missed :P
I like your covers!
Les... always the best
+David RF Les is more.
Les sucks
This looks exhausting. Excellent job.
Yes -roundabout please ! :)
This is a great finger exercise I do to test overall finger endurance, because doing triplets for 4 minutes straight is fucking tough so a good way to practise is try to test how long you can last until you can finally last the whole song
This is tight! Great job.
Good stuff my friend. Just saw them in Asbury on Friday.
This men.. Les Claypool, its a animal. My good..
Excellent cover!
wut?
I even left patrons lmao
Misfits-Crimson ghost!!
Badass bass riff man!
wow ;this blew me away. i always thought that was an effect. no shit. thats some great technique btw as always. your videos are great. hopefully your in a band.
I just noticed that you manage to keep your pinky tucked in. I believe that's the key to get through this song by hand. The only challenge is that i have to relearn some hand mechanics and build it up. I just hope it doesn't take years.
That sound is so fucking incredible
Overwhelmed!
An Endless Sporadic - Impulse
this is so fucking dope and hella mesmerizing to watch.
from primus the golden ticket uuffffffff la llevo escuchando bastante!
I got a fever . . . more triplets!!
Great work.
I just learned how to do the three finger technique not too long ago and I’ve gotten very good and pretty consistent with implementing into quick parts but this song should be a good challenge to make it as consistent as possible
Thanks for posting
Try Metallica Anesthesia (Pulling teeth)
i just can't get the same cool sound that you got going
Genial , para la próxima , Weezer - Island In The Sun . gracias
Never thought I would be able to learn primus on bass 😂

Viejo, me encanta. Sigo batallando con Les, a ver si logro tocar algo :D :D
man those Triplas are hard!
First primus song I ever learned
Nailed it
I've just discovered this channel and have to say it's incredible. I've seen your cover of YYZ by RUSH and would love for you to do The Analogue Kid as I can't seem to find an accurate tab anywhere
Those rhythms

Whoa! That's freaking amazing!
Asking, what kind of bass do you use?
is it luck? by primus dooooo it for God sake!!

When the Alcohol kicks in:
I’m used to sitting around the house watching eeeeeevillll dead
Nice!
This is fucking crazy ! Good job!!!!
Looking at the tabs im sorta relieved for practice. I expected this song to be way harder to play
Hey man! Excellent vids! How about playing King Diamond's "Twilight Symphony"? It sounds like it'd be really fun to play. I'd love to learn it myself, but I can't seem to find any tabs for it anywhere and I suck at trying to learn by ear. Keep up your excellent work!
Please cover Yes' Roundabout, off the Fragile album. Keep rocking it, brother
Finishes flawlessly. "You fellas wanna jam to some Isley Brothers?"
please do lou van cleef by primus :D
Probably the only Primus song I could play.
Loving your covers man. Lots of work in that. Are you using 2 or 3 fingers for strumming hand? Maybe both depeinding on a song? THanks.
late response but he’s definitely using 3 fingers. les claypool said he taught himself to play with 3 fingers instead of 2 so he could play faster
Duuude, u are wild!!!
How about Roundabout - Yes

MY RIGHT HAND IS ON FIRE
Can u please do primus lawyer head its a song that I could NVR learn but I've been able to learn so many from u so if u can't do it then no can
Three fingers! Was that hard to pick up! After using 2 fingers mostly? Love your work man! Thank you!
