- Ever ridden on a school bus? The most prominent thing about them (at least in the U.S.) is that they’re yellow. But their roofs are usually a different color - white. So why is that? Let's figure out!
By the way, while the iconic yellow school buses are common around the world there are school buses that are anything but ordinary. And today, we will talk about them too! For example, almost 50% of the Netherlands’ population rides a bike every day to go to work. So the government came up with the idea of a bus for kids ages 4 to 12 that will carry them to school the same way. This bus can fit a driver, 8 students who must pedal, and 3 other students who can sit on a bench in the back.

SUMMARY:
- The white roof of a bus makes the temperature inside drop an average of 10 degrees during warm seasons and only 3 to 4 degrees in wintertime.
- Besides, in the case of an emergency, a bus will be noticed faster by a rescue helicopter.
- Finally, not painting the roof the same yellow color as the rest of a bus is just cheaper, since the material most bus manufacturers use is already white.
- An Osaka kindergarten bus design was inspired by one of the most famous anime characters ever - Pikachu. Actually, using anime characters for modifying school buses is pretty common for Japan.

- Shanghai boasts one of the fastest trains in the world. The Maglev - short for “magnetic levitation” - runs at a speed of 267 miles per hour and covers 21 miles in only 8 minutes.
- A toboggan is a wicker basket attached to two wooden runners that glide on greased up rags. It’s one of Madeira, Portugal’s most famous attractions, and takes tourists for a 1-mile journey down a curvy road.
- In a hurry to get to JFK or Newark Airports from Manhattan island? Then take a helicopter ride! The helicopter service, Gotham Air, launched in 2015 and allows its clients to save tons of time.

The white roof does not work. I’m on one everyday and when it’s hot outside it’s hotter on the bus
jody stewart yeah buts that’s actually because of the windows.
I can confirm that... working at a car lot when I was younger the only thing that made a difference on the interior temperature was tinting the windows. White cars and suvs were just as hot as black ones.
It is slightly cooler, you just don't notice a big difference.
I'm no longer in school but my school bus roof didn't used to be white .It was Yellow👀

Mid to late 90's is when the paint scheme was introduced in my district (Lamar CISD Richmond, TX).
When I started Kindergarten I recall the old school buses in my district were stick shifts.

They only started painting the roofs white in the mid 1990's. Before that, they were the same color as the rest of the bus!
In Canada the school buses have yellow roofs the newer ones might have white roofs though and some of them have an emergency flashing light on the roof

Watching this while sitting in a school bus I converted to an RV. My desk is mounted over top the steering wheel LOL. Yes I love the white roof, it gets hot when the sun is beating down. Mine has AC though.

here in the UK, school busses are normal busses that have the a sticker on the front and/or back of the bus that let's people know that it's a school bus.
I LIVE IN NEW JERSEY NEAR THOSE AIRPORTS! It takes around 22 minutes to get to EWR, and an hr to get to JFK.

A white top is easier to see in case of an accident? What if the bus went off the road into the snow . Would a helicopter really see a white roof among the snow or a bright yellow roof?

At my school sometimes my buses have yellow hoods but I have a wight hood for my bus

The only time we got air on a bus was when we rode the coach bus for school trips-- coach buses are the ones with AC, cloth seats, tvs, and bathrooms.

From an energy saving standpoint and a human comfort standpoint, ideally, all vehicles, houses & commercial buildings should have roof colors of white in the summer time and black in the winter.
When your teacher says, now we should learn something everyday even on the weekends, can I get any examples, well I learned school buses have white roofing!
