I have some Julians! He is my favorite.
I read Gore Vidal’s novel about him when I was young.
Julian has some fascinating stories, indeed!
Excellent video Leo, yes the reaction of the Antiochenes to the "bearded" coins (see Julian's "Misopogon") prove that the reform took place in 361 or early 362, shortly after Constantius' death, as you rightly pointed out at the beginning of your presentation and not 363 as stated by Kent in RIC VIII.
Julian was a very good emperor to his Jewish subjects. Julian repealed many antisemitic edicts and laws. He even offered to rebuild the Jerusalem temple in exchange for the Jews help against the Persians!
Bad moves.
The religion's correlate themes are always fascinating. Another cool argument could be about the persecutions against christians and against pagans aswell. And also a strange and mysterious topic could be the festival of Isis coinage.
Btw i want to have a coin for every crazy and evil emperor: Caligula, Nero, Commodus, Domitian, Caracalla, Elagabal, maybe Tiberius (the guy wasn't too bad) ^^
I've got one of those big guys of Julian, patina is a little worn but still super crisp, one of my favorite coins and definitely my favorite Emperor. The gods are just, I've been waiting for a Julian video for a while, although it's a pity you don't have any of his solidi; I don't believe there's all that many so it makes sense though.
Thanks for all your content and all the education, you've made getting into this hobby a little less overwhelming.
Biggest what if in history
Would be hard to change the course of history away from Christianity to this happen would be necessary something like Julian reining longer and plus other 2 emperors like him in succession.
Paganism was evolving from a kind of meta-religion to a religion as in the sense we think about, paradoxically this new paganism of Julian was influence a lot by the ecclesiastical structure and ethics, so what would happen is that would exist a Pagan Church in Europe and the Christianity would probably continue to grow, but never became majority, but something like what was Judaism in the Middle Ages, but probably a little larger.
paganism up until Julian wasnt really an organised religion per se, but a a set of traditions
@@Walens90 yes, a meta-religion.
@@paulinho_eletron idk, a bunch of other religions like the cult of sol invictus are getting ever popular and starting to supplant the “traditional and stereotypical” pagan religion.
There's the bull! I wondered where that was on your instagram!
I collect Julian II bulls and have managed to acquire at least one specimen from each of the 11 mints that issued this type, Strangely this type was not issued by Rome, Trier, London, Alexandria.
Wow, that is outstanding! Congrats! :)
Which one is your favorite? Or the one you think is the most unique?
@@ClassicalNumismatics The hardest to find are Aquileia. There are two types (RIC VIII Aquileia 242 and 243) and it took some twenty years to get both.
Just scored one of Julian II in great condition for $5 USD. If not for your videos, I would have thought it was just another Late Roman Bronze. Thank you for the very valuable information!
He's a very fascinating figure indeed. I'm planning one day to get one of his bull coins, I'm seeing some on VCoins at the time of this post that were minted in Antioch and have this reddish patina on them that looks really nice, probably from exposure to the desert sands. I would very much like to have one of those but they are a little pricey so hopefully they're still there by the time I save up a bit more money.
Thank you for the content about Julian! Although I currently have only one coin of him it is a, if not thee, favorite in my small collection. A bull and stars variant minted in Antioch. Keep up the great work.
Great channel!
Coins of Julian have been on my list for a long time! I hope to scoop one up sooner or later even if they are slightly worse for wear id love to have one! love your content as always, since i moved to a new place i been watching your videos on a huge tv in the living room, your videos are even better on the big screen! keep it up!
CZcams has this neat feature that shows me on which kinds of devices people have been watching my videos on.
Surprisingly, normal computers are a minority, and most people watch them either on mobile devices or TVs. Thats quite interesting, it poses a challenge, to have footage that looks good on small AND large screens.
That clean shaved Siliqua of Julian is a beautiful coin
It is indeed. Shame for the flan crack, sadly, but other than that it is a really remarkable little piece :)
Just grabbed a Julian Siliqua from the mint at Arles.
Beautiful coins!! 👍👍
Thanks Leo ,just got a Julian , admittedly on a small flan.
Great video 👍
Hi Gordon, nice having you here again.
Thats great, which type of coin did you get?
On that 20 year vow, is that inclusive of the 10 years already claimed or is it totally new years to come?
These are mostly vows for future years of service
@@ClassicalNumismatics Que bom! mal posso esperar
📽️👍👍👍👍👍
Beautiful! I still need one for my Siscia collection but can't find one with a good price to quality ratio. I'm actually surprised none of the coins showed come from Siscia.
What kind of value would you assign to the last coin you featured?
