- The first part follows Scotsman and former Royal Marine Dean Heggie as he joins the French Foreign Legion and goes through selection and onto basic training at Castel and the infamous "Farm". A good look at what goes on in training.
The second of two videos takes a look at the 3e Régiment étranger d'infanterie, 3e REI (3rd Foreign Legion Infantry Regiment) in Guyane (The second can be seen here: • Foreign Legion (Laserl... )
If you guys are interested at a more recent look at the Legion then check out this recent article in Vanity Fair (published in Dec. 2012): www.vanityfair.com/culture/201...
You can another great classic video about the Legion in the late 80's to early 90's on my channel, "Legion of the Damned/ De Fordomdas Legion: • The Legion of the Damn...

I recommend read everything you can for a week or two before posting. Almost every question has been asked and answered and there are many active and former Legionnaires there and many many personal stories from guys who have been to selection.
Lastly here is the Official Legion Recruitment site:

Back in the days I was very fortunate to be a member of the Royal Dutch Commando's. As part of our training we had to undergo a ruthless Jungle Combat Training in French-Guyana. This training course was given by a French Foreign Legion Veteran. I met in my whole military career a lot of very good professionals all over the world and of various well know regiments but nobody like this guy. I will never forget him, far superior combat skills and stamina I ever experienced in my life..!!
It's a great achievement when you finally pass after completing the 50km march. No doubt they put you through hell, but never give up.Good to see Dean and David made it. I hope they both served their 5 years with honour.
I spent 3 weeks in selection at Aubagne, I passed all the tests but was let go at the final selection when the Officers and NCOs sit down to make the final decision who will go "rouge" and be sent to Castel for basic training. They usually get rid of 60% of the guys by this point, but they still only have room for maybe 15-20 guys and in my time, as is often the case, they have close to 40 guys who passed everything. They pick the guys they think will stay to make a career and not desert.
funny thing, the main person in this documentary Dean Heggie, I hung out with quite a bit in Bosnia in 1998. Had never been around the legion before and had a great time with Dean and the other legionnaires for the almost year I was there. Invited to their Camerone Day celebration while I was there, very cool and one of the craziest after parties I can ever recall
Had an acquaintance years ago in the US navy - early 1970s. He could not qualify for navy SEALS (not sure why) so he left the navy and moved to France to join FFL. We got a post card from Paris. Don't know if he ever made the grade ... I like to think he did and maybe he lived a long life as a successful Legionaire. I kinda envied him. :) I wouldn't have had the balls.
Let's not make this into a pissing contest. EACH nationality has their strong points and their weak points. But ALL can make good soldiers. It's about teamwork and brotherhood for those that make it, not 'my countrymen are better than yours." :)
Legion is GREAT!
I have no argument about LEGION and the fact that they give everyone a new chance makes it the most loved MILITARY UNIT in the whole world.
i love it
I Agree.Im getting myself ready, Physically and Mentally,in a few Months,I'm gonna go and Join The Legion.
I went to join the FFL in '97.
LPN
Did you make it ?
thanks 4 the upload.
It’s definitely suited for some people but not for myself. Couldn’t imagine wages being the best either.
The farm was the worst part of the training I hated it but stuck at it, but a few ran away
You are so right. Brotherhood makes soldiers effective. No wonder that for ezxaple Africa is a mess. They can't make brotherhood ties and their commanding prodedures are itself a chaos.
In Europe and America command structures have been created long ago. Hundreds of years ago.
French foreign legion has it's glory and oath for keeping brotherhood derived from Camerone, Mexico, 1863.
63 legionnaires fought maybe 2000 mexicans for a day.
Legion was detsroyed, but they didn't surrender.
No Retreat No Surrender.i love that State Of Mind.
Well best documentary based on foreign legion. I am from Nepal and I am in Germany right now. It would be pleasure if some one provide me more info on legion selection physical requirement like running distance and time limit. Legio Patria Nostra.
Its too bad the screen resolution isn't better - its a pretty good look at LEF recruitment and basic training.
Most militaries require their officers to have a college education. For some people, that's not really an option.
They really don't, just for officers. Even then, the right attitude is worth more than a thousand books
song at 32.47 is 'contre les viets".talks about indo-china.(vietnam)
thanks for uploading mate a no frills look at life in the legion
What’s the name of the song at the beginning
I saw this years ago; learning the song is always the bit that stuck in my mind!
quote 38'40": We Brits keep to ourselves. We are organised.... The French just think of themselves.
Yes that's why they can dig deeper and are mentally stronger...
Does anyone know if theres a tattoo policy in the legion? Im thinking on joining 2014.
Is this from the early 90's or late 80's? Thnx for uploading NickolaiFury
the body phisic is important or the mind is important too?
So if civie street was boring and he wanted excitement why not just rejoin the Royal Marines, perhaps his record of service in the Royal Marines was not exemplary, and he was never going to be able to re-join the elite British unit so had to join a service that would accept him, seems there is more to this story than meets the eye.
Check the information I put under the "about" tab below the video. Simple searches of the internet will also give you the answers you need. Good luck.

Except for a few cases, for example the French soldiers from the French islands of the Pacific & the Indian Ocean & their tribal tattoos, the bases rules of the French Army (the FFL is the French Army, I recalls that at somebody here, a small part of the French Army even) does not tolerate VISIBLE tattoos once put the uniform
Vous allez monter ma coline..... Adj.Ziegler.... What a crazy time....:-)
yeah it looks like its from that time frame...
37:32 never clean your boots inside barracks !!!
Never spell barracks as "barracs"!
@@nacholibre1962 yes,i am sorry.thanks for the correction
Thank you, camarade! So doya think,is this the minimum(2700 m is few),or this is a god number?
You were xpelled?
Or did you quit?
Kun mä armeijaan astuin 1983, niin kaikki vietiin. Sain vain vaatetta ja hammasharjan mukaani. Kämpässäni oli kaikki mitä ikinä tarvitsin.
En tiedä nykysuomen armeijasta. Kännyt varmaan sallitaan. Tai sit ei. Mä en salllisi.
Suomessa pitää samalla lailla olla organisaationsa arvoinen.
Then obviously the Legion isn't for you. There are people who can never become officers, or who would rather be enlisted for the brotherhood and greater chance to be in the thick of the action. For example in many special operations forces, officers only serve a couple of years before rotating out. The core of these units are the NCOs and warrant officers. Also as Logan pointed out, many don't have university degrees needed to become an officer.
Anyone knows which song are they singing at 32:47?
The song is called "Contre les viets". czcams.com/video/-lkePbXEAAk/video.html
did you tried again to re-enlist
They can dig deeper and are mentally stronger... Can you evidence that?

I've heard stories of the Irish and English not getting on well with eachother within the barracks , I suppose there is a very dark history between the two nations
Not true in general, but there are always exceptions. I dare say that at the moment there are Russian and Ukrainian men in the same section.
The problem is that you don't get to keep that identity when you leave. They change your name so no one can find you WHILE you are in the Legion. You don't get new identity papers after you leave, those are only during your time in. So after you get out those debts will still be waiting for you. Student loans, at least in the U.S., never go away.
Really ... ? This is a real shock to me ... I thought you could keep the new identity and get a new French passport with it ....
Lone Wolf you get th choice! After your service, keep your new name, or get your old id back
I run 3000 m in 12 mMinutes.Is this good in Legion?
No.
No we had to do a 2.4 km with full kit on 25kg in less than 12min in old SA army
@@davidjacobs8558 for sure what force you going to have fatty boom booms Flippin nuts look what's happened to the so called new SA army how do they wipe there bum
38:40
its not allowed but still they do it :D
A man was caught sleeping with another guy did he say? at 10:15
Or am I mistaken?
I think so lol
Its from '96
what year was this documentary shot?
1996
Anyone know what ever happened to Mr. Heggie?
Living near Aberdeen, has not responded to requests from former legionnaire
As the series did not follow him after the farm I doubt if he went far. he was thrown out of the Marines prior to joining the Legion I think. He was in a rifle company of my unit and was not very good - hence the pathetic whining when tired.
Left Royal Marines or had exit for Legion? WTF?
Im too old to join the Legion but I would learn at least basic French before. I joined. I mean thats just common sense.
I joined with zero knowledge of french :)
***** Yes of course i got my white 'Kepi Blanc'.
I went to Perpignan, S France and joined there. I went by train to Aubagne and got processed for 4 weeks before they pulled me into an office and offered me 5 years contract if I wanted it. I said yes and got my green camo uniform, got fitted for my kepi blanc and then i had told them i wanted out. I had a really bad gut feeling that I'd get shot and i wanted to live a long life like many others do. The commander got really pissed off with me and told me he wanted to break my neck.I got out :)
Liar
Hahaha!
Glad they can fight better than they sing !
They said a corporal bunched guys in the chest for coming late to line up. Is this still allowed today in legion?
Doubt it
Did they look after or steal that mans pay at 31:00
he says " Iook after your money", but it's akward...
But the other guy just took it. Why did they keep the first?
I`ve seen plenty of men with neck tattoos full sleeve tattoos (etc) serving - tattoos is not a problem in the legion ;)
I guess they didn't accept you, because you are writing here.
I expect that legionnaires have really strict rules what to say and write outside their world.
Do they have internet connection at all?
Billy Bob Bunton - Not for recruits
2a-end)
But it's true that for recent years, if visible tattoos are small, they are accepted sometimes
But if you're covered with large tattoos visible in uniform, you will not be accepted...
A Warrant Officer of the French Army in the career for 24 years now
Then what are you there for. Do things right
wtf that guy who quite the run only done 600 m lol at least you don't have to do the stupid beep test I preferred the track runs over going back and forward
This video showed a fraction of what they did, the selection process takes days, sometimes weeks.
The beep test is included.
Yerrakhunt Actually this video, judging from the uniforms, dates back to the 80's when the 2500 meter run was the only agility test used for new recruits. Now with a lousy job market in Europe the test is much harder. It includes a rope climb, sit-ups, pull-ups and the "bip" test you mentioned which is a shuttle run.
I would find it hard not to laugh at boot hoiing.ant fight if a believer.like school bullying.
Isabelle
From what I know it must be hidden by short sleeves and be non offensive or political/religious in nature.
I only had the bottle to join the RAF Regiment - sorry..
A famous British historian Nigel Ferguson wrote that the French are the most successful European nation in the art of war. If you take the amount of wars France have been involved in they have won more. I know this may go against the Anglo-Saxon propaganda you have been brought up with, but facts are hard to erase.
We Finns are more strong.
It sounds ,from some voluntier that they joined to solve their problems;Fine but Legion is a military unit and not SOCIAL Services in local church.
