A few information about the piece:
The symphony was composed in the summer of 1877, during a visit to Pörtschach am Wörthersee, a town in the Austrian province of Carinthia. Its composition was brief, in comparison with the 21 years it took Brahms to complete his First Symphony.
The cheery and almost pastoral mood of the symphony often invites comparisons with Beethoven's Sixth Symphony, but, perhaps mischievously, Brahms wrote to his publisher on November 22, 1877, that the symphony "is so melancholy that you will not be able to bear it. I have never written anything so sad, and the score must come out in mourning."
The premiere was given in Vienna on December 30, 1877 by the Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of Hans Richter.

Among the four finest symphonies ever composed...
What are your other three?
@@narrativematters4100 Brahms's first, third, and fourth, of course:) (only partly joking)
I love that lullaby quote in the first movemnet. Makes me smile :)
It's like a more mature and almost darker version of it. It's so breathtaking to listen to!!!
where do you mean? can you send the time?
@@deltafournumbers Was the lullaby song taken from this symphony?? or it is something different?
@@withcalax9263 Listen at 4:15. The symphony's second theme has parts from the lullaby Brahms composed sometime before.

On a Brahms binge this morning...
CZcams should have a 'love' next to the 'like'...
Awesome symphony! One of my favourites!
12:22 Horn Excerpt 🤩🤩
How can I be more grateful with this!
It’s a god-send to get a version without the disgusting adverts.
I've heard Furtwangler conducting. Toscanini, Von Karajan, Monteux, and now Kleiber (the son). I am so fond of this symphony I get huge pleasure out of all these versions. I would not call it "cheery and pastoral" so much as "ardent," but I agree with my fellow posters who love this piece of music.
Wundervoll
34:59 Did Mahler take the introductory theme of his first symphony from here?
just got to this point, immediately thought that.
A Mahler's copy and paste!
I've always heard it as a quote from Beethoven 4.
@@giovanniperini3973 not exactly, as it is transposed
Yes absolutely! Too much of a coincidence or uniqueness of the motiff. And that theme also appears in Brahms's Tragic Overture, check it out. Mahler sure chose the best ones to take inspiration from :)
Great
I took a class on audition techniques and I played the wrong part of the except. They used this symphony as the excerpts.
first upload in 3 years :)
