  • FAITH IN THE SAGES: How Much Reliance Must We Have - with Rabbi Michael Skobac - Jews for Judaism Education Director
Many people question the relevance and legitimacy of the rabbinic sages. They protest and say why should we listen to human beings - we only listen to God.
There are at least two very serious flaws with this objection.
First, the scriptures don't give us clear guidance on every issue that we face. And even when it does, we may have doubts about the actual situation or how to apply the Torah's guidance. How should we deal with cases where we lack direction from the Bible itself?
The Almighty could have instructed us to pray to Him and that He would clear up the confusion. But that is not the system that He set up. In the Torah itself, God instructs us to follow the rulings of the leading judges of our time.
In this video, Rabbi Michael Skobac discusses the Torah's mandate that is relayed on the rulings of the sages and why God tells us not to deviate from their rulings to the right or to the left.
This clear instruction can be found in Deut.17: 8-11 and more specifically in Deut 17:11.

JEWS FOR JUDAISM is an outreach organization whose primary goal is to win back to Judaism those Jews who have been influenced by the following six threats to Jewish survival that are devastating the global Jewish community.
    1. Hebrew-Christian missionaries convert thousands of Jews worldwide every year
    2. Destructive cults cause many Jews to abandon family, friends and careers
    3. Eastern religions, Buddhism and Hinduism are spiritual choices for many Jews
    4. Apathy and ignorance leave many Jews unaware, unaffiliated and assimilated
    5. Intermarriage is exploding with a 75% rate in some North American cities
    6. Anti-Israel BDS on campus inhibits Jewish students from standing up for Israel and Judaism
To assist non-Jews who have left other religions, JEWS FOR JUDAISM also provides educational programs to help them embrace the Torah’s Seven Noachide Laws for Gentiles.
We achieve our goals through our worldwide Internet outreach, Social Media, free educational programs, educational literature and counseling services that connect Jewish people to the spiritual depth, beauty and wisdom of Judaism.
“I am so grateful to have discovered the wonderful Jews for Judaism CZcams lectures by Rabbi Skobac. I am a Jew who converted to Christianity in college, but now, thanks to your online outreach, I have returned to Judaism. Thank you.” - Rebecca G.
In a nutshell, Jews for Judaism saves Jewish lives and keeps Jews Jewish.

So who decides, who becomes a sage?

    2 questions rabbi Skobac:
    1. How can ANYBODY who is not perfect, PROPERLY advise anybody else about ANYTHING at all?
    2. When sages need advice, whom do they ask for it?
    P.S. LOVE your presentations

No human is perfect. But God, who is perfect, decided that imperfect human beings will decide questions of Torah law that arise. When you think about it, this is how we live our lives. How can anyone give you medical advice if they are not perfect? Well, you wouldn’t just go to anyone. You go to a doctor who has studied for many years and has achieved a level of competency to answer most of your questions. If your family doctor is not able to answer a particular question, he or she will consult with specialists who have more training and experience dealing with your question. The same system works in terms of Torah law. God did not give license to any person to simply decide for themselves - we are directed by God to consult with the leading sages and judges of our generation. - Rabbi Michael Skobac

What sages? I am not sure what sages you are talking about.
Are there any sages today, with authority from God, that is?
Is Deuteronomy 17 applicable today? Where is the place that Hashem shall choose?
The temple was destroyed 2000 years ago...
By the way, I think what right and left means is that you have to learn to find your guidance within yourself, within your own resonant heart, so that left is always left, and right is always right, when your heart is in resonance with God's heart.
Heart resonance is the most powerful force in the universe, as it is said, "And God saw all that He has made, and behold, it is very good" (Gen. 1:31). So, when your heart is in resonance with God's heart, what you experience is invariably very good.
