So 1994 had Pulp Fiction #8 on IMDB, Forest Gump #11 and The Shawshank Redemption #1. Hell of a year for movies.
Also the Lion king at #42 and Léon: The Professional at #43. Btw, check out all of the other movies from 1994: Interview with the Vampire, The Crow, Four weddings and a Funeral, Clerks, Speed, The Mask, Ace Ventura, Ed Wood, True Lies, Dumb and Dumber, Stargate, Natural Born Killers... And I didn't even include a few I didn't watch. We're never getting this kind of quality back.

@@lemmypop1300 That.s because film makers back then were more interested in making something #1 - actually good and/or interesting, and #2 - original, unlike today (and for about the last 20 or so years), when so-called "film makers" are mostly intersted in cash grabs. so all they make are sequels/prequels, remakes, and franchise reboots.
@@quwykxz I know this will sound bad, but I think that the fall of Miramax has a lot to do with the sad state of movies today. They were the company that funded a lot of interesting movies that had both commercial and artistic appeal, and in turn brought indie way of thinking into the mainstream. (I'm in no way shape or form trying to excuse Harvey W, this is one of those cases where we should separate the art from the 'artist'.)
There are some who try to do something similar today, A24 for example. But then most of really interesting stuff just goes to streaming and doesn't get widespread acclaim like it was the case until 2010's.

We didn't need to go there. Umm. Yes, we did. What is wrong with you young uns? That's the best part of the story. Absolutely hilarious. Walken's delivery is amazing.
The best part of the story, is the scene shows why he is like he is, prepared to risk it all, he's from a martial family. Then abruptly wakes, before he's going to risk it all in the double cross. What makes it brilliant is later, he comments to his girl, "he never remembers his dreams.". So he's unaware of the experience that forges his behavioural decisions. That's how to write.
Yeah I mean Deadpool 2 they called it the prison locker lol his dad was being held as a prisoner of war that's literally the only place it could be safe from being stolen by the enemy. What my question is, Did his grandad get the dysentery from keeping the watch in his ass?
I try not to be sceptical but I refuse to believe that anyone who has seen this movie can't recall seeing this movie.
If you're a kid at the time it's easy and a lot of stuff in this movie will go over your head.

Kill Bill is a confirmed to be a movie inside the Tarentino-verse. But maybe i'm too drunk to remember all the details and that particular theory was debunked. Idk, I vaguely remember an interview Q did that may have been part of Once Upon a Time In Hollywood press tour and he wanted to put that on record, i suppose. Idk. lol
Like, Kill Bill is a movie Vince and Jules could watch on the big screen, alongside Mr. White, blonde, etc. Idk where Hateful 8 resides. but yeah. There's a connect lore and the movies of that timeline/universe.
There's reason to believe Marcellus was helping Vincent sit on Butch's apartment because Jules had indeed quit. Nobody really expected Butch to return to his apartment, so that's why Marcellus and Vincent were only half ass guarding it.
That's why Vincent left his gun laying around when he went to the can and why Marcellus was picking up doughnuts.
In the spring of 1995 at Iowa State we were discussing this movie in class. The prof said, "I like my movies to have a beginning, middle, and end." We booed him and said he had no taste.
I mean, it does have all three of those things. They're just not in the customary places.
Tarantino basically made nonlinear storytelling sexy again. I'm old enough to remember that flashbacks were extremely frowned upon at the time.
I have gotten to despise them myself now. Few can expertly shuffle a timeline as a deck of cards the way Tarantino can. Most of the time they seem to be to make up for poor story telling.
It's a tool that should be used properly. And Tarantino's use here was essentially because this movie is three short stories.
Bruce Willis is such a great actor, that you could tell he was thinking of Pop Tarts.

Maybe it does but I'm not even sure Tarantino had that level of detail in his head. On the Graham Norton Show he said that twists can be sort of boring so in his head he wanted Vincent to have sort of a rigid style and he wanted Uma to recreate one of the cats dancing from the Aristocats movie.

Fun fact: They did not actually win the trophy for dancing. Mia didn't say she wanted to win it, though--she just said she wanted it. When Butch is walking to his apartment to retrieve the watch, he walks by some other houses and you can hear a radio very briefly saying that the Jack Rabbit Slim trophy was stolen.

If you turn the volume all the way up, you can definitely hear “this is the jack rabbits slim” but nothing about the trophy.
If you watch the special edition dvd, with special trivia subtitles in it, they said the Jack Rabbit Slims part on the radio is actually an ad for the restaurant.
It is fantastic world-building, but the trophy was not stolen.

The dance that Uma Thurman was doing during the contest was an actual dance from the 1960's called The Swim...when she held her nose and crouched down that was a move that represents dunking under the water.
The whole dance sequence was closely inspired by the dance scene in the movie "8½"

I was a teenager when this came out. My dad and i had to drive 25 miles to an independent theater to see it. We knew of Reservoir Dogs and loved it.
Pulp Fiction blew everyone's minds. Nobody had ever seen a movie like this. The soundtrack was huge too.
This movie really was a cultural touchstone. It was radically different from everything up to that point.
“You can see the drugs they’re on by the way they’re moving.” Was one of the most genius statements I’ve heard in someone watching that dancing scene.

Mia snorted the heroin thinking it was cocaine, that´s the detoning to had the overdose (heroin can be snorted as well, but the most common way it´s like Vincent did, using a needle. Also Mia was fully drugged in that moment). And Vincent goes a lot to the bath, due to he´s an heroin addict, and that provokes you, sometimes, constipation. Even the shot to Marvin´s face, it´s due to heroin, that also provokes you spasms (in this case pulling the trigger).
If the movie was in made in a chronicle way - the end would be butch saying " zed is dead" and riding away on his new chopper

1) In 1994 it was not common to be able to buy a beer at a movie theater. 2) I once took my friend's wife to a concert. He wasn't a big fan of the band but his wife was, so he said I should take her. I was friends with both of them and it wasn't a big deal. 3) Two shakes of a lamb's tail is a common metaphor in the American language.

This summer is the 30th anniversary of Pulp Fiction and Quentin Tarantino just showed his personal 35mm print of it at his Vista theater in LA. I was lucky enough to go🍿😎🎥❤️✨i love this movie sm, it makes me happy to see you guys watching it.
p.s. the old-school theory behind the band-aid on Wallace’s neck is that his soul was taken out from that spot and then put into the briefcase ✨and that’s what’s glowing in the briefcase ✨
Also the other reason why Vincent is always in the bathroom is because heroin constipates you, so every bad thing that happens to Vincent is because he’s using the toilet: Mia’s overdose, getting caught coming out of it at Butch’s apartment, and the hold up at the coffee shop.

You guys are onto something with the choices/redemption angle. Tarantino has gone back and forth over the years on how intentional that was (which makes me suspect that stuff came more from co-writer Roger Avery) but Samuel Jackson has said in interviews that the movie's about redemption. Ultimately, what we see in the Pulp Fiction script is what you see in most good scripts: Each character represents a different possible expression of the theme. In this case, each character is given a decision-point where they can make a choice between (for lack of better terms) being good or being bad, and the choice they make affects how they come out of the story. Specifically:
(1) Jules sees "the miracle" and chooses to leave the criminal life. As a result, he (presumably) lives to see another day;
(2) Vincent sees "the miracle" and chooses to continue making his bad choices (crime, heroin). His choices lead to him being killed (staying in the criminal life put him in Butch's apartment and the constipation that comes with heroin addiction put him in the bathroom at the wrong time);
(3) Butch initially makes a bad choice (crossing Marcellus, the mob boss) and, as a result, is in danger of being killed, BUT then he makes a good choice (going back to save Marcellus from Zed and Maynard). As a result, Butch gets to live (and presumably keep the money he got from not throwing the fight).
The more you analyze good movies, the more you see this pattern play out over and over again. Every character is there to illustrate one possible path that could be taken through the story/theme, with the protagonist -- in movies that have a singular protagonist -- generally being the one who ultimately makes the "right" choice(s).
Of course, Pulp Fiction is actually three classic pulp fiction stories woven together, so we have three protagonists, which is an interesting twist on the formula. Especially when you consider that, although Vincent ultimately chooses poorly and gets himself killed, in the story in which he's the protagonist (the one where he takes Mia out), he makes the right choices and manages to come out of it okay. You **could** argue that he might've ended up succumbing to temptation had Mia's OD not derailed the evening, but he was, up until that point, resisting temptation and planning to not cross the line with Mia so, y'know, he was on the right path for that story and made it out alive.
Should include with (3) that Zed's bike, which Butch ends up with, has "Grace" on its tank.
Feel like its about a lot of things, i feel like both the pawn shop scene from this and a specific shot from Reservoir Dogs represent a sort of ''you dont know what these places are hiding'' sort of thing. In reservoir there is a shot of Mr. Blonde walking out of the warehouse during the torture scene and the camera follows him outside, all the way to his car, where he picks up the gas can and then goes back inside, all in a single shot. The way the song and interior ambience switch to the outside (kids playing, outside shit happening sort of sounds) its like a completely different world. Feel like that shot specifically is commenting on this idea, and the pawn shop scene in this movie is doing something similar.
Butch felt like (and was) a cheat and never felt worthy of owning his father's watch. Marcellus was a bitter enemy, to put it mildly, so Butch saving him from an unthinkable fate definitely redeemed his honor.
I don't think Butch the character was literally thinking any of this, but there's a reason the script had him choose a katana.
After all, he could have simply called the police and told them what was happening in pawn shop.

Yeah, this film was unbelievable. Unique and unforgettable.
For my money, only Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Apocalypse Now: Redux, and 2001: A Space Odyssey rank higher on my Top 5 Films of All Time List than does Pulp Fiction. I genuinely think this film is not only Quentin Tarantino's only sole true masterpiece, but is also one of the greatest films ever made of all time. It's that good, and it had that much of a deep impact upon the world of screenwriting and film directing. A landmark achievement in cinema, no question about it, the only reason Quentin prefers to call Once Upon A Time In Hollywood his favorite film and his best film is because Pulp Fiction wasn't solely written or made by Quentin alone. He had writing help for this film from writer/director Roger Avery, and also got lots of help and assistance from Weinstein's production team along with constant assistance and directing advice from the writing/directing team of brothers, the Coens, he also was in contact with writer/director/sfx/camera operating legend Sam Raimi during Pulp Fiction's production run.

Tons of easter eggs of course as I’m sure you’ll see in the comments. One of the important ones is that Marcellus Wallace popping out in front of Butch’s car isn’t totally random, he was waiting with Vincent as they were staking out his place but went to get coffee and donuts. That’s also why Vincent doesn’t react as he must hear Butch walking around from the bathroom (he assumes it’s Marcellus who just popped out to go around the corner). I also choose to believe that the gun on the counter is one of Marcellus’ guns instead of Vincent’s as it would seem silly for Vincent to leave his only gun on the counter when he’s staking out a place to kill a guy.

I still love how Marvin in this movie is also the voice of Samurai Jack (and a whole bunch of other stuff)
Some people don't like all the jumping around and get lost, so I am curious what y'all will think. There are ways you can watch it more chronologically in order as well. The popular theory on the case's contents is that it is Marcellus Wallace's soul. He sold his soul to the devil to get where he is (case unlocked via 666) and the bandage on the back of his head. In Chinese culture, the soul is removed from that spot. The case is mainly a plot point to move the story along, known as a MacGuffin. Since Jules didn't get killed in that apartment because of divine intervention, he stepped away from his line of work taking the sign from God seriously. Vincent did not and gets punished by God when he gets gunned down coming out of the bathroom. Butch is close to being killed, but he goes back to help Marcellus. So two redemption stories and one stayed on the bad path and God punishes.

The sword Butch used in the pawn shop is the same one Hattori Hanzo made for "The Bride" in Kill Bill. Also, Red Apples Cigarettes are in a bunch of Tarantino movies. They are probably all taking place in the same, fucked up world. Supernatural things exist in all of the movies with Red Apples(that I've seen). Sometimes they're subtle, like in Pulp Fiction(Bullets passing through Jules, Butch's supernatural luck provided by the watch. Seriously think about what happened as soon as he grabbed the watch. Finds the gun carelessly left on the counter, runs into Marcellus walking across the street, ends up in a situation where he saves his life, gets to live out his days without looking over his shoulder, new motorcycle) and Kill Bill(Pai Mei's abilities). Sometimes it's in your face, like From Dusk Till Dawn and Four Rooms. Romy And Michelle's High School Reunion is an outlier for a lot of reasons, but you could easily make the case that the way it ends is so impossibly perfect for the main characters that they had a positive supernatural experience, like Jules and Butch in Pulp Fiction. Tarantino was dating Mira Sorvino at the time, which explains how Red Apples appeared in the movie. I haven't seen The Hateful 8 or Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, but I would expect something unnatural to happen in both. I should watch them. I haven't seen a Tarantino since Inglorious Bastards.

According to Tarantino, the inspiration for this movie came from the pulp fiction novels and magazines of the 30s and 40s, which were basically lurid stories about gangsters, true crime/murderers, delinquents, and other low-class (especially at the time) subject matter (and, as the intro mentioned, the books were printed on cheap, rough paper). They were basically the B-movies of novels. In those old stories, there were a number of tropes that came up a lot. E.g. (1) the henchmen showing up to murder someone who crossed the boss, (2) the henchman being tasked with babysitting the boss's wife (but don't touch!), and (3) the boxer who is ordered by the mob to throw the fight but double-crosses them. Tarantino's idea was "What if you took a few of those trope-y stories from the pulp fiction books and had them all happen in the same city over the course of a day or two, and some of the characters in each story had loose connections to characters in the other stories?"
The second part of his inspiration was from old action films where, very often, the movie would start with the bad guys showing up and killing somebody, and then the movie would cut to the good guy who we'd follow for the rest of the story as he tracked down the bad guys and brought them to justice. Tarantino thought, "What if, instead of cutting to the good guy after the first scene, we just followed the henchmen through the rest of their day? What would they get up to? What kind of mundane stuff would they talk about as they went about their business?"
The answers to those questions turned into Pulp Fiction.
What makes this great is just gangsters just hanging outon the job and talking about pop culture and whether a foot massage means anything. It brings so much humanity to people who are in the disposal business:)

Let’s clear this up right away, though, so that, in such a situation, you never again have to say “I don’t know if this is quotable.” Tarantino doesn’t make movies that aren’t (even though the degree may vary). You can take it as a given that you will be finding some gems. When you hear them, you’ll just know. Rewatching it is a definite yes as well. You’ll never regret it.

Jules refers to the diner robber as "Ringo" because he calls different characters by the names of The Beatles: John, Paul, George, and Ringo. However, Quentin Tarantino didn't like this idea after the movie was shot, so he removed all references except for the name "Ringo". The Band Aid on Marcellus' neck is because the actor had an injury so they just went with it. Two shakes of a lamb's tail. Sometimes people use terms that were quite common but before your time so they seem odd.
The very first run of VHS tapes, back when this came out, showed what is in the case. Marcellus Wallace's soul is in it, that's why he has a band aid on the back of his neck, someone stole it from him and he's trying to get it back.
Amanda Plummer has absolutely cornered the market on playing unhinged lunatics.
And yeah, fast food places overseas really do sell beer. I enjoyed a Grande Mac and a San Miguel in a McDonald's in Barcelona.

In the bed scene, Fabiene said subtly to Butch, at least twice, that she was pregnant. Butch didn´t catch it.

Marcellus Wallace left it there when he went to get breakfast, Butch just had the timing of catching Vincent there alone. That's why he bumped into Marselleus on the way out. Butch got HELLA lucky catching just one with their pants down (literally) so that watch gotta be a good luck charm.
I want you to know that for the rest of my life, I'm ALWAYS going to think of "colon clock" when I see that scene!

I give this movie a solid 10....there is nothing about this movie that could have been bettered. Another 10/10 i would award also goes to a Tarantino movie Django Unchained......two of the best movies ever made! Other top movies i would recommend are Angel Heart, The Good The Bad & The Ugly, Cross Of Iron and The Exorcist to name a few!
