  • Margo & Tashira join us while on the road for their Pittsburgh workshop, and stop to chat about their experiences with the life coaching industry. The New York Times recently published an article about about victims who had spent their life savings on life coaching. They discuss the challenges of finding a good life coach, and Tashira shares her own struggles with the desire to offer services, while at the same time recognizing that most people will be unable to maintain the discipline required to become a popular online personality and influencer.

I haven't watched the video yet but to answer the question, yes they are. The majority of the time people really need to see a therapist but for whatever reason that's not the option people go for.

What I appreciate about receiving a good and legitimate formal education is that having a critical eye and learning to interrogate thought and action is built into the curriculum. Engaging in scrutiny is apart of intellectual practice. I am not saying that everyone should have to go to college, however EVERYONE SHOULD RECEIVE AN EDUCATION! Many of the life coaching business have ignorance built into the model, thus many have been exploited which is devastating for those who already exist in the margins. Worst yet is when they don’t realize it. This can also be seen with all these real estate hack businesses as well, credit repair organizations, and the list goes on.

Where say it louder re exploitation for those existing at the margins!

There is an excellent podcast called "The Dream" that dedicates its whole 3rd season to the cultish nature of Life Coaches/Coaching. It is wild! The first 2 seasons cover all sorts of MLMs and expose them for all the harm they enact.

“Some of these coaches are only successful at being coaches” Thank You!!!!! So true. It’s a shame that it seems like these coaching things are usually targeting women and using poor women if we keeping it real.

God’s grace allows us to do these things. It’s a choice- but it’s always His grace. Whether we realize it or not. ❤

Toxic life coaches make the most money (in upsell after upsell) from people who haven’t truly realized that their savior is inside of them.
Ad nauseum upsells are effective on those who are desiring to be saved or believe that their liberation is external to them.
    Great episode! ❤

This really resonates with me. Having spent two nights at a beach city in a hotel a few steps from the beach is well worth it. It was amazing! Doing what you want that brings you joy is self love. I went with two of my family members. As KarenBritChick said work to live!❤

I know someone who took a 6 week life coaching course who couldn’t hold down a job for more than a year and refused to go to professional therapy and tried to coach me, someone who received professional therapy for 4 years of my life and was part of a spiritual social group for eight years…and I have been in the workforce for 28 years.. This “coach” told me I needed to work on myself and do inner work 😂. Meanwhile my professional therapist and I decided my therapy goals were already completed. ❤
😂 “I got on my yoga mat…”, so true! Nasty women rule! ❤I love you both.

Margot’s mic drops and jaw dropping comments 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉. I’m not religious, so it rubs me the wrong way when great people (like T) attribute their success to the ether. Well done Margot. Your insights are 🔥🔥🔥🔥

I think buying the person's book is the least expensive way to tell. I don't know if it's because I love to read, but I feel like a lot of their books are TOTAL garbage. Such a tell.

This whole movement towards paying for mentorship makes my ass itch. It's like you have to pay to build a community that pours into you and vice versa. Paying for friendship, companionship, and connections is what's wrong with life today. It's become more evident that the poor will remain poor because they cannot afford the basic necessities of life, and yes, friendship, companionship, and connections is a basic life necessary.

It is a grift! Let’s not pretend.
Almost all the “coaches” are grifters who are monetising the pain/trauma/insecurities of others while pretending to form a community (farm).
I feel particularly strongly about the ones using black women empowerment as an avenue to exploit their audience.

I saw a lot of that around 2016 and through the lockdown era..."invest in yourself" MLM talk. Some people are (life) coaching as well as business coaching with no proof of concept and no knowledge of human behavior. That's a must! Many people have deep rooted issues that keep them from moving forward etc. A few catch phrases and workbooks won't remedy that. I agree there's nothing wrong with sharing information but, so many promise specific results. That's an issue.

If I hear one more social media add or get invitations for a life coach. Who has no credibility other than skeezy vibes, yelling and degrading folks, and saying they got it out the mud. Like bruuhhhh not on my watch👩🏽‍⚖️ And what happened to mentorship?

This was a great time. I'm always so surprised as white people, it's usually white women, that don't understand giving God the glory. I've encountered this quite a bit and I don't even use religious speech as much as T does.
I don't see it as me NOT doing the work, or having the knowledge, but I recognize where my help comes from.
