Very Large Great White Shark Reacts to Standup Paddleboarder

  • Recently, I've been filming large great white sharks. These are sub-adult and adult white sharks I've been filming this month.
It's is known that large adult white sharks tend to stay offshore in California while the juveniles hang out in near-shore waters. Lately, it's been the large females near shore I've been observing.

They’re not babies, either. One caught off Orange Beach, not too long ago, was approximately 13 feet long. Divers have encountered a few while spear fishing. Biologists always say that sharks aren't generally hunting people, but it's hard to really process this until you see this kind of footage, over and over where sharks essentially ignore or avoid people even in close proximity. The emphasis on their unpredictability highlights the need to respect their space, but also not to be in constant terror.

The bigger ones are only evaluating how much energy they would spend if they decided to attack you and make you a meal. So, a major factor would be how recently it has eaten and how hungry it is and if it can spare any energy for an attack. It's why they stalk their prey, boils down to energy expenditure. Other reasons for attacking are territorial but that's a whole other story, they're also at times just coming over out of curiosity. Amazing, beautiful animals.

Maybe that's why sharks are immune to disease. They take care of the weak and sick. You do good work ❤

Absolutely love your videos! Sharks are so often portrayed as vicious killers it is amazing to watch them calmly and peacefully swimming with humans without a second thought. They are majestic, beautiful creatures (yes potentially deadly which adds to their beauty) and they deserve to be protected. Would rather see a planet devoid of humans than sharks (no I am not an eco-terrorist out to destroy humanity)

It’s truly sickening to know that there are many people in this world who don’t think twice about maiming & poaching sharks. It’s a diabolical historical issue but, that it’s 2023 and remains as a daily activity is just abhorrent. Thanks for the great work that you do, Malibu artist!

Larger sharks tend to be more skeptical or calculating with their food choices because they seem to realize that every attempt to eat requires a high level of energy. If the venture appears too risky to undertake, they will likely pass up the opportunity for an easier target, like a wounded seal or a smaller food source that will put up less of a fight than something as large as themselves.

Unpredictable is the key word. I live in Florida and although we have Great White's (not in the numbers you do) , they are far less scary to me than a bull shark . But paddleboarding around a 12ft + GW is risking your life . As fast as it swam away it could have swam at him . As usual , incredible footage 🙏

And to add , I agree with you that there is nothing scarier than an ocean devoid of sharks. They play such a vital role in our ecosystem and they are majestic in every sense of the word ! I pray the people slaughtering them are caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law

Thank you Carlos for another great video. I understand you warning about what’s coming up but I believe everyone should see these disturbing things so they know what’s going on and hopefully will report such barbaric behaviour. Regardless of whether a shark is scary or not they have the right to live freely in their own environment. I am terrified of sharks however I appreciate them and am fascinated by them. I wouldn’t go swimming with them but I love your videos and being more educated about these beautiful creatures. I definitely don’t condone any kind of cruelty or trophy hunting to any animal. I don’t eat fish and don’t even like seeing them caught. To be honest the most scary creature on this planet is us (humans)😕
