Cheap But Great Work Boots

- Cheap boots or expensive boots? Recently I was asked by a viewer if it’s better to have one pair of great work boots like Whites, Nicks, or Wesco, or to have two cheap boots to rotate. It’s a great question because there are benefits to each - of course a great pair of custom boots should fit perfectly, be well constructed, and last several rebuilds.
On the other hand being able to change out your boots on a rotating schedule allows them to dry and reduce the chance for athletes foot, lets the foam (if there is any) recover, and gives you options depending on your job or location. The answer is probably different depending on what you do for a living, if your boots get soaked during the day with water or grease and oil, or maybe you’re a trim carpenter and mostly spend your days inside of nearly finished spaces. So I began looking at affordable boot options, of course this is another term which means different things for different people, so considering the custom boots are around $400-500 lets half that and only look at boots which are below $200.

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

Silverados are now going for around 250 🙄...Carl it's time to update the video lol
Thanks very much for the kind words and great review on our boots Carl! Much appreciated. Although very early days for our brand in the US we are looking forward to getting going and making our products more available. All the best
Where can I buy your boots in the US?
@@CaseyErtz Thanks very much for the interest in our brand. We are available on Amazon, at the moment we are sold out, we have stock waiting to go in once restrictions are lifted. I will drop you a message when this day comes, hopefully it will be soon. We looking forward to getting our product into the US!
@@JimGreenFootwearOfficial I'm willing to give them a try but I really do need to try on first. I have short, somewhat wide feet. One day you'll be available out here, by then I'll give them a shot.
@@Psycho-Ssnake where abouts are you located? If in the USA we will have more stock on Amazon later this week, all our shipping is done through FBA. From what you saying our wider toe box might be what you looking for.
@@Bimbows98 On our website we only offer our boots in mens sizes as we don't have a demand for ladies in South Africa so we dont carry stoc., We can however make up a pair for you. Where are you located? Send us an email and we will do our best to get a pair to you.
I’ve been waiting for a good Jim green Razorback boots review for my entire life, and here I am. Thank you Carl
Have you worn them before? I'd love to hear from someone who's used these for an extended time.
@Carl Murawski I have these boots for sometime, and I have to say that they have aged wonderfully. I personally put in Ecco leather insoles, as the insoles it had came with have been a little bit too uncomfortable. the quality of this company is astounding. I have used these for work, and for day hiking. I’ve really put these beauties through the paces, but I feel that it is time for a new pair. I watched this video in the hopes to see if the quality was still the same as I had hoped, and I was not disappointed. Thank you Carl, keep up the great work 😊
@@OnePeopleOnelife thanks for the feedback on our boots! Glad they keeping you going! Is a great review from Carl and we looking forward to having our boots in the US.
Plus SA is based, 𝕭𝖔𝖊𝖗𝖙𝖍𝖊𝖗 😇
I love the concept behind both of these boots, that the supply chain is local to the manufacturing.
Jim Green's are the best! Good value for money - made in South Africa by people who live Africa's tough terrain 👍
Jim Green also well known for their Vellies (traditonal South African Chukka Boot style). Had mine for over 4 years and still no end in sight for them.
I’ve had a pair of Jim Green Stockmans for 2 years now and they’re the real deal. Very comfortable and perfect for all the tough terrains and conditions South Africa has to offer. Amazing product!
I was just looking at the stockman and outback boots. I really like them. I think I may get a pair for myself and my grampa. he has arthritis in his hands bad and cant tie shoelaces.
Looks like silverado took your advice, im looking at getting a pair and they now come with 5 eyelets on each side
Change from within!!!!
I’ve had a pair of the Jim Green stockmans for a while now and use them for everything! Hiking, fishing, hunting and work. Value for money is great, not going to be using anything else.
Also worth noting is Jim Green's after sales/customer care. I had a small issue with a pair of Bush cats (thumbnail pic) and they sorted it out very quickly!
The owner contacted me directly.
Nice to know they won't just take your money and run.
Thanks for the info!
Herman kilian thanks very much for the feedback and kind words, much appreciated. We will continue to provide South Africa and now the US with great boots and service🥾
I would usually recommend Red Wing 953 or 952 for under $200. Very solid boots. But, it's always refreshing to see new brands being thrown into the mix for variety.
Bought a pair of soft toe Silverados as an alternate to my steel toe Thorogoods. Not one single complaint with the Silverados, I love em.
I'm a little late to the party, but I've been alternating between a pair of Razorbacks and Thorogoods for almost a year and they've held up wonderfully.
The toebox is nice and wide without being cavernous. After 12 hours they're still comfortable on my feet. I would recommend, they seem to easily be the best value boot out there.
Die hard Red Wing fan here but, I must admit that both of those boots looked fantastic and I will be checking them out more in depth for sure. Great video.
Thank you! I'll always have those boot brands which I love too, but it's fun to see the different options out there. Thanks for watching!
Proudly 🇿🇦.. okay I'm getting these.
I wear Bronx and they not meant for this daily weat nonsense even though I don't walk all that much. Some days I walk more than others a higher quality is what I want and believe I need to accompany them
Ive got their Stockmans, AR8, and Razorbacks. All excellent. I do find the hardware can rust from sweat, but the leather, soles, and unique styles A+.
New subscriber, love the info. Just purchased a pair of Jim Green’s. I also recently purchased a pair of Chippewa boots... the ones that are all material sourced in America then shipped to Vietnam for assembly. Have worn the same model for over 10yrs and they were originally an all American boot with a best found price of $229. The new outsourced boot sells for $179! Honestly, the construction is as good if not better. The last 2 pair of American boots at $229 fell apart at the sole within 2 months. They were replaced free, but jeez. I’ve found the outsourced on sale for $149 occasionally, and it’s a great buy!!! 400gram thinsulate ultra, chippatex bootie (gore lost its patent...my brother manufactures gore-Tex and several generic named versions of the exact same material since before the patent date ran up. And a Goodyear welt with vibram soles. Even at $179...an excellent buy.
Hey Carl. I watched this video when you uploaded it. Was very intrigued by Jim Green because of your review. Ended up buying a pair 2 weeks ago (late Nov. 2021). I'm a mailman in a rural area of northern Maryland. They are PERFECT for my job. The two main reasons for me getting them for my job; the comfort of the leather & the fact they can be re-soled. I am looking forward to getting many years of mail delivery out of my Razorbacks!! Thanks for the review
Silverado now $245. Jeeez. What a difference a couple years makes. Thanks tho
Thank you. Just ordered a pair of silverado 8inch work boots (logger style) and couldn't find anything on them. Decided to take a gamble but you video makes me a lil more confident in knowing what kind of quality i may be receiving. Will update in a few weeks after i get them if anyone else is interested in those boots
Great pair of vellies that have lasted for ages!! Very comfortable
I have a pair of Jim Green Highlanders from 1996. Never resoled and still going strong.
Wow... they must have some great stories to tell🥾🥾 thanks for the feedback and support
Good day, hope your Highlanders are still going strongr. Some exciting news our side is our bulk stock is safely at our Va depot and our USA website is open to direct orders. Pop over to www.jimgreenfootwear.com to view all styles on offer. Thanks again for the support.
While on the topic of South Africa I can speak from experience that you need to try some of our mohair socks. See you have some merino socks listed in the description which might be better suited to the winter but with summer around the corner I feel you could do with some mohair socks!
Proudly South African, got my first JIM GREENS last week. Super stoked, love them. Great to see the product in USA
Thanks for the support JP! Much appreciated. In a few months we will be well stocked in the US across a few styles so looking forward to getting more of our boots that side. All the best
The Silverado boots look decent, but they must be on the same level as Thorogood or the Danner Bull Runs / Chippewa service boots / Justin work boots and Redwings model # 2233 / 2245 / 953. So there are some options to choose from at the $200 and under you just have to look around. I’m not sure of all the difference brands, but Midwest Boots is a good place to look.
The Jim Greens are interesting boots especially for the price. Great review
Definitely a good place to shop.
I've gone to Workboots.com in the past because they had some good sales, but their return policy sucks.
Just bought a pair of pull on justin conductor's to potentially replace my lace up conductors that are starting to smell, but they're too big and since I removed the tag they cannot be returned or exchanged.
I just went and gave them to my dad to try out.
I'll be sticking with lace up boots going forward.
Right now the Razorback is $180 and the Lumberjack is $240.
I have a pair of Jim Green African Ranger in black and Stockman in brown. Both are great.
I have been in my trade for almost a decade now. I have tried red wing, thorogood, Tim pro's, and haven't found anything wearable for MORE THAN HALF A DAY other than $89 wolverine boots that my flat feet don't destroy in less than six months. I'll be trying Silverado's next. Wish me luck!
@Jaz I can't speak for Jim Green, but Silverado DEFINITELY doesn't cut corners on quality. I bought the crepe sole logger boots and I absolutely love them. I didn't start off slow either, I've been wearing them 12 hours a day since I got them and that was about two weeks ago. I even wear these babies on my days off they're so comfortable 😂 took about 100 hours to break in but the break in period wasn't uncomfortable. These put every pair of red wings I've ever owned to shame
Custom Nicks boot.
Hi Carl! Your videos are great. I've been wearing a pair of Georgia Boots for about 2 months now and they've been great. The GB00294 is my pair. They're awesome, and break-in wasn't bad but I did use a fair bit of mink oil. Anyways, figured I'd just share, and I snagged them for $90.
Jim Green boots are legendary 👌 the construction is solid and they offer an easy pick up and deliver resole service here in South Africa. I bought a pair of the Monster boots. Already planning on getting my next pair. This after passing on a redwing peco (which I still want too)
I'm sure they've already been mentioned in this thread, but I'd like to shout out the Thorogood moc toe. American made (with domestic and international parts) and union owned. Full grain oil tanned leather, available in 6" and 8" with and without a steel toe, some sort of electrical protection in the sole (I don't work with electricity so I don't fully know the specifics), and a 360° storm welt.
Most of my job is just walking and kneeling on hard floors, and the combination of the cushy, supportive insole and shock absorbing wedge outsole is great for my feet. I got mine (6" soft toe) for $204 shipped from Midwest Boots (I don't think you can actually buy them from Thorogood's website), who offer free returns and exchanges as well. They're also mostly unlined, so I was able to wear them for a full work day right out of the box with minimal break in discomfort.
You should have a minimum of two pairs of boots. Buy the best you can afford, whatever that price point.
Yeah I like a 8 inch and a 6 inch of two different pairs. My good pair and my work pair.
Both these boots are $50 more than when this video came out so for under $200 there's a pretty clear winner now, I have a pair of Jim green African rangers and love them, they're 100% worth it even after the last couple years of inflation.
Carolina boot company is another good option. I will take a look at the Silverado boot.
WOW. Absolutely LOVE the idea of getting boots Made in South Africa. Ordering direct from Jim Green. THANKS !
I think you'll be shocked at the boot you get for the money!
@@CarlMurawski Free shipping. With the exchange rate boot cost = $92.00 approx. How did you learn about Jim Green boots ?
rhino ranch thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. The free shipping is only available in SA but great news is that our USA website will be open start of October. Drop us a message if you would like any more information
@@JimGreenFootwearOfficial SOUNDS GREAT. Looking forward to wrapping my feet in South African leather !
@@Clambelly will drop you a message when we live. Are you involved with rhinos over in the USA or just a great username? Quite a few safari rangers and anti poaching units use our Razorback as their patrolling boots.
I just got 2 pair of danners for $150 ea, shipped...pretty nice boots.....had thorogoods and red wings
But really die hards are tough to beat....they are comfy once you throw a good insole in and they break in....the sole last forever and you can get em 2 for price of 1 twice a year.....they run a bit big and are bit heavy but for $100 for 2 pair and they are comfortable its hard to beat....if the mold they use fits your foot even better....
Die hards fit a lil sloppy for me and are heavy but use em when I know I have a day working in mud or doing concrete
I have always had 2 pairs of boots for work and I keep at least one pair of the old boots in the truck for that one job that will just ruin a boot (roofing tar). Outdoor and indoor electric and communications work. One day on one day off.
Thanks for sharing, thats a great point!
I wear Justin conductor's at work.
Around $180, US made, and they just work for me.
Could be better but not bad at all.
I actually got mine for around $165 0n sale.
The only reason I chose these is because I'm required all black footwear and wanted something traditional.
If I was recommending boots to someone who's not restricted on color I'd recommend the Thorogood 814, but they're just over $200 shipped.
The justin conductor's do come in a nice tobacco brown and are generally just a good boot for the money, especially if you like a round toe roper with a kiltie.
If you wanna try something from Mexico I highly recommend Bonanza boots and Nordblim, both are present in the USA, they're not expensive and quality it's incredible, give it a try!
I'll check it out!
Awesome content, I work in building maintenance in public housing and actually have two par of boots, one for snow removal, and the other for everyday usage. They are also steel toed for safety. Great topic thanks again.
You should try a company called red back boots they have almost equal quality to red wing and they’re under $200 they are an Australian made boots
They all use cemented construction.
Where mine daily hauling hazmat
You can’t find any in the US. in a normal foot size. Either way to small or overly huge. I’m trying to get the red back Mesa can’t get anywhere
I see all sorts of people wearing iron rangers as just dress boots but if you can get over the price I personally love them as daily boots. Plus with good treatment they repel water well enough to do most anything other than wading.
I agree, they're fantastic boots!
Maybe you should have a look at William Lennon boots from the U.K. They’re not Goodyear welted but are stitched using copper wire. Apparently there are only 4 machines in the world left that stitch on this was and they own 3 of them!
Definitely the best boots i’ve ever owned....and not a ridiculous price.
Awsome boots. Totally resoleable with their construction.
Been trying out different boots lately and I would love to see your take on wolverine and Georgia boots
I started out with a pair of Jim green vellies, some 1460 doc martens, and some redwing iron rangers as my babies
I think I'm going to try a couple of pairs of Jim Green's thanks to you. I emailed Him Green and they asked me if it was your video I saw, and I told 'em yeah. So, I'll let you know what I think.
Thanks very much Barry! Please do let us know how they go. All the best
I have the velie and the Birkenstock professional insole fits fairly well if you like cork footbeds.
I love my Diehard moc toe boots. Tough ad nails and comfortable!
I'm buying a pair!
HI Juan, Hope you having a great weekend so far, for your interest our Razorback is back in stock, most sizes are available, just waiting on a few more to pick up on the Amazon system which should be any day now.

The US Army solved the "how many pairs of boots" issue during WW2. The soldiers were issued two pairs of boots, but tended to only wear one so that the other pair could be worn for field dress occasions. The result was rampant foot infections. The Army solution was to mandate that the pairs of boots be laced differently. Then an officer or NCO could tell at a glance that both pairs were being worn.
Two pairs Georgia g8040's(Danner rainforest wannabes). $154 a pair at tractor supply. Now thanks to you, looking to pick up a pair of Silverado 7732 loggers✌️😉👍
Tie a half knot between the bottom eyelets and speed hooks so your foot is locked in and stays locked for longer if the laces come off the speed hook.
The advantage of three eyelets is that half knot is over your foot and not the flex point or your leg.
Been trying out different boots lately and I would love to see your take on wolverine and Georgia boots
Carl, great video, very informative. Murawski as a boot brand. Tough, aggressive sounding name. I’d buy a pair!
Fair enough! Let it be so!
I disagree on the Silverado eyelet/speed hook issue in fact I paid an additional $15 at Whites to have that done. I like to be able to take them off with the greatest of ease and open them wide up so they can dry out and it’s much easier with one more row of speed hooks.
I am retired military and I have had speed hooks put into my boots a great many times and I have never had my boots come un bound.
it's march of 2024 now. They run 179.99 on Amazon, come next day in most cases with prime, and are STILL about the best value work boot for your dollar. and they look great to boot(no pun intended).
I was shocked how good the Carhart 6 inch mocasin boot was. Just over $100 on sale.
Damn, the Silverados are like $240 now lol. Still, I got the Jim Green's, they're alright. Better than my Irish Setters which hurt my feet like a mfer. I think everyone should get a wide boot regardless of if you have a wide foot or not, you don't want your toe smashing into the steel toe cap all day.
Those Silverado are nice boots.
Great informative videos Carl. Howabout a video on best carpenters/framers workboots....ive found doing some framing and slate roofing climbing around up on ladders osha planks etc the really heavy boots just too much mass...big heels tripping up etc. I noticed in the Larry Haun videos on efficient carpenter framing Larry and his brother wore flat smooth sole boots....mid heighth. Maybe a video for the high wire performers of the blue collar work segment. Thanks....
I have a couple of pairs of the diehard boot to switch out just like you talked about at the beginning of the video. They have lasted for many years and are still strong. Just replaced insoles. Otherwise indestructible.
LUGZ Drifter ZEO HI boot you should do a review on. A cheap boot. $30. Ive had it for 2 years. Put it through hell landscaping and working in my garage. Also wore it all winter in snow and slush, every day. Not a drop of water got through and feet were toasty warm every time. SOO warm and the most comfortable shoe or sneaker or boot Ive ever had on my feel. I stand 8 hours a day 5 days a week for 2+ years ont hem and they are like a memory foam sole. Still in perfect shape. All for $30. Your viewers may laugh at Lugz brand but Im telling you their boots are incredibly comfortable and well made.
Are the razorbacks still worth the buy the the $50 price increase?
You should try bull boxers. It’s a Dutch and Portugal boot company that makes nice high quality boots in a good price. But most of them are glued but I had a limited edition pair for a year and they still look good
I'll definitely look into them!
Carl Murawski hope you like them
The jim gree. Are fire
Good to see American made products. I'm never purchasing anything from China again.
I hear that!
Everything is made in China. What a stupid statement to make. You are never going to buy a car again, you are never going to buy a shirt again, you are never going to buy electronics again. Just dumb dumb dumb.
@@mad0uche no you are dumb . We need to buy from home. Hit china in the pocket. You can certainly buy cars not built in china , though I guess they all have parts sourced from china. The more people want to buy products from domestic companies the more likely it will become available and shut down the dependence on a hostile country for our every day living. Might cost more but that's because you get a better built product.
matt I’m not sure about cars or electronics, but there are clothes that aren’t made in China, and don’t source any of their stuff from China.
Matt you are very naive, there are lots of products not made in China.
I've been trying to think of the best way to describe how amazing my nicks boots are and all I can think of now is nicks boots are so amazing they make my redwing boots feel like Brahma boots and now I really want another pair of nicks
Or you can have separate hot and cold weather boots
They are now $189. Out of my league. Oh well.
Great video, thanks! I've had excellent service from Red Wing King Toe stock #2240 6" boots. More room in the toe box than most and all day comfort. Have 2 pair and alternate them. Seems like they'll last darn near forever.
army boots are good, I asked my dad for his old pair which he didn't wear when he was an engineer (he was in the army before that, they gave him those boots and other stuff to fit in with the soldiers) they are good boots, I'm glad I have them, (I don't do work though)
Depending on which boot
Ive found in the last decade that more expensive does not equate to better quality. Ive spent high dollar for shoes and boots that were torture devices. Ive found a pair of addidas on the clearance rack that were heaven sent. I have found that more is not better. I am open to lower prices aa long as the purposes are met.
Ordered jim greens to try as daily boots, and Frank's as customs. I need more money lol
Thanks for the support, much appreciated. Let us know how they go. All the best
Pressure washer here. I need at least 3 pair of mid tier boots to keep in rotation. Rubber boots are foot wreckers and hurt for more than a couple hours working. Ive had luck with military surplus Bellvilles & Bates with gore tex. Currently wearing Dickies traders (comfy) and Carolina steel toes I got on Ebay special. Bleach and water destroy boots. So I wear my Red Wings, Chippewa, and Wolverine 1000 Milers as casual wear. It would break my heart to have any of those get ruined by my profession.
I have Jim Green Razorbacks. The major cost cutting measure is the exchange rate. The USA dollar is worth more. That's where a bulk of the cost savings comes from. It's cheaper to make shoes in South Africa. The major dislike, for me, is that the shoes are double lasted using synthetic lasting board. Synthetic lasting boards crack and break apart. If a cobbler needs to take them apart, and rebuild the boot with actual pieces of leather, it will cost more than the retail price of the boots.
Jim Green does pay online influencers for their reviews. You can see the "click here to buy" links. The reviewer gets paid a commission for every sale. But that's how business is done. Influencers need to get paid. It cost money to create content.
Just ordered a pair can’t wait to try them on!
Georgia Giants are my personal choice for work boots

eBay have lots of great cheap boots from HH, Work America, AdTec, Craftsman, Ariat and even higher end brands like Redwing, Wolverine, and Thoroughood. They also have lots of Mexico made Goodyear welted boots brand new from various companies.
Wolverine boots, on their website, have clearance sales on some of their boots and you can score a great pair of 200 dollar work boots for under one hundred dollars. I have 2 pairs of redwings and I baby those.
I think that they stopped making diehards when sears closed down. But if they still do id love a review of the new ones
You can still find some online I think.
They are actually made by Rock Rooster. Not sure of they have always been, but I just picked up a pair of their moc toe a few days ago
What would you recommend for a steel toe oxford?? I would greatly appreciate your insight!
Carl, what are your thoughts on timberland boots ? (Great content, as usual :) )
I think they're a brand that got caught up in a social image, but I did own a pair of Timberland Pros. The issue I had with them was that the soles would get super hard in the winter and become really slippery. In the summer they were great though!
Just ordered the Silverado’s 🫡
I worked at a funeral home on grounds crew for my first job. Bought my first pair of boots to just get me through to my first paycheck from walmart. They worked for that purpose. Even a little longer. They made it a month before they completely fell apart. And I mean like, duct tape around the toe because the sole was falling off fall apart. Then I bought some nice Ariat work boots. They lasted me the rest of that job. Unfortunately I didn't get hired back on for the next summer (I was a junior in high school when I worked there so I couldn't work during the school year) because they didn't need the hands and I found a different job that has kept me on since so I never did get to test them out for a second season, but I do wear them every time I do yard work, cut and split wood, etc. which isn't nearly the same pacer as my job was but they still feel great and they get the job done. That being said, I'd really like to get my hands on a pair of those silverados.
I have to say that there is a huge benefit from starting at the bottom like the Walmart boots and moving up the ladder. You'll appreciate each step and the benefits that come with it, all while understanding your preference for boots overall.
Good video. If you ever get a chance, do a review on the Caswell boats.
Cool just found out about this company and they only have size 8, 8.5, and 9...
Good day, Thanks for the interest in our product. Much appreciated. Our first batch sold out quite quickly and then Corona hit which has delayed us being able to restock, great news though is that by end of this week we will have more stock gong into Amazon with the addition of a Tan leather option. Great content as usual
Much appreciated!
Very nice boots 🥾 love the workwear reviews !
Great review. Aren't the Silverado Boots made by the same factory as Mark Albert's?
Thanks a lot for showing me the Silverado “sarcasm”
Now another boot I’ll have to try
Lol
You mentioned but missed Diehard boots. They are no longer available from Sears but are available under the RockRooster brand. As far as Jim Green boots, they look great but are not available in wide sizes so they are out of consideration for me. The Silverado boots look good but are twice the cost of the Diehards so 2 Diehards for the price of a Silverado makes way more sense since they are both built about the same.
You can actually get Red Wings relatively cheap too if you look at their actual dedicated work boots and not Iron Rangers.
What insoles are 50 bucks?
If you don't want to spend money on quality boots, what you do is you go on Ebay- and you search for your typical red wing boots. They will be sold there brand new for half price, they are called red wing factory seconds and they will have a hole punched through the tongue. You can get a top quality pair of boots for $135.
Good call!
I love my Rocky boots they are slip on and insulated think I gave 240 for them and they come with a year free replacement
Honestly ,after price checking today the Jim green are the only affordable (affordable meaning you're not being paid enough to afford $500 boots never mind two pairs) tough work boot that's going to last any sort of time. At least in my personal experience . I hang rain gutters for a living and I've even had my Keens melt out from under me .
I mean I'm sorry if I sound a little grumpy about the whole thing but as a person who actually works for a living being asked to spend $500 on work boots is like being asked to bring a brand new pickup to load manure in . And I see a lot of people doing it but that doesn't mean it makes any sense .
If I am not mistaken, Jim Greene now have US distribution sorted out.
I like my self some wolverine boots usually pay between 120-200 dollars I thought that was pricey 😆
