Monster Hunter World. The Board Game. It's finally here. From Steamforged games, Monster Hunter brings you the epic monster takedown you've been looking for. That is of course if you don't already own 2 and have 3 more on the way. But in all seriousness, if you're looking for one with the Monster Hunter IP. This is it. If you're looking for one that's fairly streamlined, giving you the gameplay you want without 3 stat sheets and 14 extra things to track, this is it. If you just like amazing over the top miniatures, this is it. And if you remove the H and S from "This", and then reverse the order, than This is It.

5 - Great game. Period. It's in my collection. Obviously.
4 - Really solid game but for reasons X or Y, I'm just not willing to give it my top score. Almost always a game I'm adding to my collection.
3 - A solid game. May or may not enter/leave my collection depending on a number of factors such as other similar games, personal interest, people I play with etc. Sometimes can reflect a game's allure dropping over time.
2 - I'm either not the target audience, or too many issues with it.
1 - An arguably bad game.

I'm surprised with how well they translated the video game mechanics to the board game. The Low Rank/High Rank monster escalation is a great touch
Edit: in the video game sometimes other monsters would invade the quests and fight the monster you are hunting or attack you. It would be cool to have something like this as a Time Card

I must admit, I am loving seeing boardgame versions of these fantastic video games. Great video games are wonderful combinations of thoughtful mechanics leading to fun player engagement, interesting themes, and beautiful art with an adequate challenge. It just makes sense that this would translate well to board gaming. I am somewhat new to board gaming, so the lightness of this game is a positive for me, for now. With that being said, I don't really want one shot games and am looking for a campaign style experience. I'ts a wonderful time to be alive ;-)

I think the monster hunter genre lends itself well to board games because board games do big boss fights well. There are some games like Darkest Dungeon that I did not back and slay the spire that I will probably not back because those games feel like they could have started off as board games and got refined into streamlined video games, so putting them into board game form seems like a step backwards.

Would like to hear a variant of what you’d prefer (which sounds like the weight and choices you get in Primal) to what Rikki would prefer (which I’m thinking would be the streamlined, less fiddly Monster Hunter World). Thre is no rage mode for monsters? Like on the dark souls game from SFG? Because monster have that in the video game, and is one of the most important aspects I think. Like the monsters get more aggressive, and with less recovery time (bigger attacks, harder to avoid). Part of mastering the video game, is knowing what can you do on both monster states.

I don't mind the Time cards not having "enough" variation to them, as there's always a risk of adding TOO much randomness that could then greatly affect the tactics and choices you make! Wouldn't really go well with how the video game works.
But for those who DO want more stuff going on here, an easy house rule would be to NOT use 1/3 or so of the "basic" Time cards and the simply reshuffle the deck if it runs out too quickly because you suddenly don't have enough cards to build a proper deck according to the scenario!
As for the monsters, there's MUCH more variety to their behavior and what impact breaking body parts has on the monster's behavior deck when you get past the "introductory" monsters like the Great Jagras!

I backed Primal fully and am really hoping this is worth backing as well. Monster Hunter is by far my favorite video game I've played. Have you played the video game yourself? I've played every one of them and loved them all and so I am opposite in my stance to how you feel about the artwork as it is very true to the video game. I like the idea of the campaign and the feeling of the hunt better than what I've seen from Primal and I think the play area is a lot more exciting than Primal's simple 4 directional positioning of the monster in relation to the hunters. Weird pairing to try and compare tbh, Primal is a deck building card game with very minimal tactical miniature elements. In fact, It isn't a miniatures game at all. Whereas Monster Hunter World is clearly trying to be a revised and deeper version of HZ:D and a lighter part of the CABB genre alongside stuff like Kingdom Death, Aeon Trespass, Townsfolk Tussle and Sankokushin.

It's probably going to be something like a 130-150$ ENTRY pledge level with 30$ shipping on top of that, with a couple of monsters in the core box, those being, very early level monsters like the great Jagras. They will of course have 9 different expansions each for 40-60$. I was pretty bummed when I heard that Steamforged was doing the game. Mmm. If you have an elemental damage deck that amounts to different damage on the card, isn't that just a fancy dice that pretends not to be?
I also gotta say, I am glad you voice your criticisms even if in theory, expansions and whatnot can fix these. That is very much similar to... Dark Souls. And that is not neccessarily a good thing. My copy of Dark Souls only felt like a complete game 5 expansions in.
That's very bad, actually. It took that long until a proper mage class, for example. The first truly good boss of that game that really utilizes their map really well came out last year. What is one going to do until one has all these expansions? :D

IMO the only aspect missing to give this game 5 out of 5 stars is the artstyle on the cards, right now they look quite bland to me for such a thematic game.

They shared an image of a Palico mini stretch goal before the campaign launched, and the day one unlock is an alternate scope. That means 22% of the stretch goals already add no value other than aesthetics! In order to manage your stamina they are encouraging you to faint? Fainting in the video game is pretty much the last thing you want to do. It decreases your rewards at the end of the hunt to almost nothing. I wonder if this is something they're going to change over time because fainting should be discouraged and not exploited.
I appreciate what they're trying to do with the systems but monster hunter is not a streamlined video game. It has quite the barrier to entry for anybody new to it. I don't think there's any way to make this IP streamlined no matter what medium it's on. Just those monster cards alone cause so much cringe with the amount of information that's on them.
This is a major pass for me. I'm a fan of the ip, but I'd rather play the video game. If I want a board game about fighting monsters I'll play massive darkness or gloomhaven or something. If I want big epic boss fights, I'm sure there's other games for that. Aeons End comes to mind.
