    Horse racing died with Desert Orchid. The last of his kind. No matter how many times you watch this you're either in tears or on the verge of it. We should also think of poor Ten Plus. A giant of a horse and another great.

    The best horse I ever rode in cross country and endurance was a big Appaloosa with an enormous jump and a tendency to plough through fences he didn't feel warranted jumping. When I see Desert Orchid it reminds me of that very horse and his fondness for going “Nah.. you know what? We're not going over that one Charlotte waste of energy we're going through” and I'd try like hell to gear him up and go over but alas it didn't always work.
    I just ducked and braced for the inevitable sound of snapping, cracking and bits of shit and fence flying all over as he ripped clean through it like a snow plough. If only we had GoPro helmet cams back then.
    Murder sometimes but what a horse.

    • @dawnkeir549
      @dawnkeir549 Před 5 lety

      No he did not

    • @mizofan
      @mizofan Před 3 lety

      No. Although he started as a 2 miler with good speed he could have stayed the GN distance, but with his success he would have been saddled with a weight handicap that would have become more of a struggle, and as a left handed course it was less suited to him (though ironically Aintree was his 1st left handed win). Also he had become so popular there was pressure not to risk him (and threats too). He achieved enough and is a legend.

    I think adding extra weight to a better horse to level? the field?
    or for whatever reason is the most absurd and chicken shit practice!
    If the horse is better by far than the others make it carry enough extra
    weight that maybe one of the others could win?
    Only in horse racing is the super athlete ripped off this way!

    • @dannyeldergolf
      @dannyeldergolf Před 5 lety

      This only happens in handicaps, not in the biggest and best races

    • @mizofan
      @mizofan Před 3 lety

      The 1973 Grand National was a travesty- poor Crisp ran and jumped brilliantly but after the final fence the weight handicap took its toll, he was exhausted and Red Rum caught him just before the line. No horse since Dessie has been so handicapped. I think the handicap is to make races more interesting since with fences and their risk (and smaller prize money than the flat) there are often fewer horses and with the greater distance than on the flat, difference in ability can create bigger gaps by the end- the field would be more stretched, finishes less exciting.

      Arkle was great, Dessie was great. Both had magnificent ability and wins, both had handicaps greater than horses since. What i love about Dessie is his personality, leading from the front, his fighting spirit and courage; the Cheltenham Gold Cup 89 was one example of that incredible will, there were others, as you know.
