The reason this song is so special imo is that all three instruments feel like they share a perfectly equal amount of the spotlight. The guitar gets it's shine, but it doesn't dominate like almost any other song. It's just really cool and endearing that they all get equal time to riff and solo and it somehow comes together into a perfectly cohesive song with three people being the star all at the same time.
I dunno man I mean it is Rush, generally speaking Lee and Peart are more notable for bass and drums than Leifson is for guitar. he's good, but relative to his field, he doesn't stand out as much as the other two band members. I'd say this spotlight on the bass and drums in this song isn't unusual for this band.
@skylitze You’re on to something here… I think the equality of spotlight between the three rush members is one of the things that consistently makes them so good
Leifson is one of the most underrated guitar players there is in music. This guy can do everything. I would put him up there with David Gilmore as far as licks and riffs go. The dude can play, and I can't make it through an entire album of Rush in a sitting. But I don't need to. But back to the original comment, these guys were all about each other, and nobody outshines or casts a shadow on the other ones. That was kind of their source for sustainability in this industry. If you wanna watch a real good documentary Rush's documentary was extraordinary!!!
I don’t know. ZZ Top, the Police, and Genesis come to mind. But Rush is very technically proficient. Neil Peart however, is the greatest drummer of all time. That is without question. And don’t anyone even suggest that that drunken buffoon Keith Moon is anywhere close. He isn’t even in the neighborhood of Peart.
@Hunter I thought it was Peart. Lee, Lifeson, and John Rutsey were the original lineup of rush. Peart joined the band after their first album and worked on fly by night
So many moments in this are great, but I love the ease and just plain dominance of the bass in this song. Any really good bass player knows this song, or at least parts, but almost none of us could actually play it at the pace, tempo, expression and freakin' EASE that Geddy plays it. Even Les Claypool struggles to play this song cleanly, and Geddy taught him how. Look at his face: it's like the ultimate humblebrag!
@@gianthills if it's so easy let's see your video playing it as well as Geddy Lee. You don't have to bother with the dubs since it's just so easy for you

Agree the three man band that was always amazing even when they were coming to an end with all the health issues with Alex and Neil they gave their all to the fans
I have been listening to Rush since the early 80's. This is an awesome video. The Professor is in his element and all three of them are definitely feeling the music. Thank you for making this world a better place to listen.
This is literal comfort food for me…it’s one of my main go-to Rushclips when I’m in need of happiness. I love watching my dearly-beloved boys at play. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I could listen to and watch Rush all day. All three are amazing musicians. The other band that has musicians that are all legends at their instruments - Led Zeppelin. Anyone think of others?
Como pode oito lunáticos serem capazes de dar dislike, justamente e somente, pros caras que revolucionaram o rock progressivo e criaram essa obra prima?! O mundo tá perdido!!
I spent my teens 14-19 playing and learning all I could about playing the Bass, no matter how much I practiced I could not even come close to replicating Geddys technique that 2 nd bass riff he does, is so incredible, I worked so hard on copying that , I would ask after I tried it how I sounded ? If I sounded close ?? My close friend was being honest and objective , he said it sounded like I took my bass and just through it down a flight of stairs !! LOL, LOL. I stopped playing soon after that !
As a former bassist myself who thinks Geddy is King of the Bass? It irks me when people, musicians or otherwise, say "It's only 4 strings--what can you do with only 4 strings?" and "THE BASS IS TO ANCHOR THE SONG. NOTHING MORE, NOTHING LESS." Geddy, among others, has a few things to say about that both with words and music, I think.
Scott Cooper this song is from 'Moving Pictures'. Theres another video in this location that's showcasing the song 2112, which is from the album.... Yeah you've guessed it!
I appreciate the tight shots on Geddy’s right hand. You can really see how hard he hits those strings. Geddy’s attack on those bass string is the one thing that makes copying him difficult. I really noticed that when I started looking at different tribute bands for Rush. Many of the bass players just don’t attack those strings as hard as Ged does, which is a big part of his sound. I think that Tim from YYNot does a good Geddy impression on the bass. He can hit those strings like Geddy does. Also Marc from New World Men and Chris from Lotus Land also do a respectable job. I’ve listen to a lot of Rush tribute bands on CZcams and those are the only three worth listening to, especially when it comes to the vocals. YYNot originally had Rocky at vocals, but the replacement, Patty, is better for the vocals. Rocky is a fantastic singer, she just didn’t sound like Geddy. Her vocals were too clean, whereas Patty has some distortion, like Geddy did in his early years. New World Men has to take the cake on vocals, since Mat is also the drummer. How in the hell he sings like Geddy while playing Peart is amazing. Chris, the vocalist from Lotus Land sounds a lot like Geddy in his younger years. Chris also plays the bass like Geddy to. Attacking those strings like a mad man.

True whole band sound, as opposed to a solo act.

No one like them before or since. The way these three lads mastered their instruments remains fresh and unique. Legendary.
Geddy and Neil wrote this while jamming together.
Only Alex could figure out what to do with this on guitar!!
Masters of their art. The one and only "Rush"
Indeed.
Geddy’s face during the entire intro just looks like “Oh man here comes the fun part..” while staring off… just so happy to be playing his instrument…
