Great history, which can still be discovered in the Heritage Centre at Chatterley Whitfield.

Remember doing my underground training at Whitfield in 1965 followed by the start of my technical training at Kemble.

I’d forgotten how many pits there were in North Staffordshire. After I left the NCB I became an apprentice electrician and worked on installing cabling systems at Wolstanton, for the Bindex system on the coal pre plant in the valley, where eventually the A500 or ‘D’ road was built. Wolstanton colliery is now the site of a huge retail park.
