And I think so for the same reason I think those big, thunking footsteps when he’s _walking_ , not _running_ ,are scarier than if he just jumped on you from behind- this version of Batman isn’t afraid of you getting away. See, I understand why Doug didn't like the climax, but I really liked it myself. The fact that the villain wasn't there in person I actually thought was a great touch. Often in real life, the worst villains are not the ones who do everything themselves, but rather the ones who inspired others to do evil (think Charles Manson). The reveal that the Riddler had all these followers ready to carry out his will, and they considered Batman as much of an inspiration as the Riddler was powerful. The climax was an emotional one where he's forced to confront his own dark side in a way we haven't really seen from Batman before. He learns what he's done wrong, and realizes what he can still do right. Even the choice of using water in the climax I thought was good because of the "wash away the filth" aspect, and bats don't generally do well in water.

So yeah, the Batmobile isn't spectacular, he wears like a jumpsuit and crashes horrifically cause he's not used to it, and the cops really, really don't trust him. You see how vulnerable he is, but he is trying to establish himself.
Also, I freaking loved that you could hear his footsteps. It just added to his fear factor. None of the other Batmans were ever really scary or that threatening, but this guy? Yeah, I'd be shaking in my boots.
But again, he is young and inexperienced, he will figure it out in the sequels, so I can really appreciate all the things he's doing that typically most Batmans do not do. Makes for a great character arc.

That moment of Riddler and Batman in Arkham was just so great. That smile actually felt genuine. Not mocking or cruel or arrogant. That genuinely “I am happy to see you” smile is chilling.
I do wish they would of kept more of Hannibal Joker. Batman having brought down Joker in a unseen “Year One” would explain why Gordon so blindly trusts him. And a Joker kept behind glass but Batman occasionally has to turn to beats giving Joker the full stage.

@@Hession0Drasha My only issue with him one day becoming Joker and not already being Joker is the screen time it will take from other villains to eventually turn him. And truthfully all fans really want is a live action Killing Joke origin and that isn’t the easiest to pull off without making Joker the leading villain.
If it was up to me, since we never get a clear backstory- he should already be The Joker by the time we see him. He should be such a threat that Batman bringing him down earned blind loyalty from Gordon. But we should never get to see the full story, but only have it referenced in case files and conversations. Joker could say something about how he use to be a handsome fellow before “our little tussle at ACE left me with these beauty marks” but leave it at that.
They planted the seed that mental health is so poor in Gotham that even the Wayne’s were not spared. So in this case I think simply having Joker be born from the sickest and ugliest parts of Gotham is a good enough origin. DC just needs to take the time and not rush bringing him into the big picture too soon. If they save it for like The Batman 4 as a payoff for all his smaller appearances it could be epic

I like the approach that the Nolan movies kicked off, with the darker tone and some of the wackier-looking characters having their style and costumes toned down to make the story feel more grounded in reality. It's a tough balancing act to get right, though, and at times it can feel a little *too* subdued -- Riddler's physical appearance being one such case, he's utterly unrecognizable. I would have appreciated some overt nod to the classic Riddler style, like maybe he uses a cheeky cartoon "intellectual gentleman" in a green bowler hat as an internet user icon. Or when he turns himself in and leads Batman & the cops to find him at the diner, he's outfitted in the full goofy green attire to signal "Here I am, you idiots! Pay attention to me!!"

@@0Fyrebrand0 Its not just the appearance, its the character. The Riddler in the comics is not a killer. He's more interested in proving he's smart than murdering anyone, even Batman. Riddler is more like an evil version of Sherlock Holmes from BBC's Sherlock. A smug know-it-all who's aware of how brilliant he is, and wants everyone to know it. He's not a mass murderer like the Joker, he's purely in it as a game. Making him just a serial killer is boring. There's no style or charisma. I get trying to be more "realistic" but you still have Batman dress up as a bat and fight crime or the Joker wear clown make up. A guy dressing up in a green suit and bowler hat isn't that unbelievable.

Yeah the Riddler is basically the Zodiac Killer mixed with the villain from Seven as well as the Unabomber. But I do like the fact that they didn't protray the Wayans as this perfect never can-do-no-wrong couple.

I was surprised they took that angle with the Wayne parents, but it was a cool twist. It makes sense that they would have ugly secrets in this world though you still feel for Bruce when we learn the truth

If this movie was 45 minutes shorter, it would have been near perfect. Everything after the Riddler is captured has that "Dear God this movie is still going" quality to it and it just gets worse as it goes on. Before that my biggest complaint is the car chase ultimately being pointless. Like you say, people died and for no good reason, he could have just hit up the Penguin later.

    • @lovablesnowman

It did feel a bit like that they finished the writing and then realised they still had their big action scene budget and had to use it up somehow. The movie easily could have and should have ended with Riddler in Arkham.

24:35 Agreed. Batman has tons of villains that would be interesting in a live action movie. Hugo Strange, Hush, Black Mask, Court of Owls, Lady Shiva, Deathstroke, Nocturna. Hell, I wouldn't mind having Mad Hatter in a Batman movie. He could be creepy as hell if done right.

Agreed, I feel like many people came out of this movie just thinking "This Riddler was kinda weird, I guess" and not taking away much the depth to his origins, his motivations and the ironic genius of his scene at Arkham where he says to Batman that he's not as smart as he thought he was while we see his reflection. I even thought it was a genuinely great adaptation that yes, had changes but still retained the base core.

I want to see Hush (Thomas Elliot) as the main villain, if/when they do the sequel. I think this type of a Batman universe could really do Hush some justice. Hold off on The Joker for film number 3 in the series. I liked this video.
