This is great, I have a huge amount of respect for Garage Band as a product. I've recorded entire EPs on it - and on an even more stripped back version as I was on an Ipad 2 (using an Alesis Ipad Dock)! It's also a great tool for DAW education, because it strips so much stuff down to just what is necessary. I'm also a huge fan of their virtual drummers (as a drummer myself) as they make it incredibly easy to customize drum beats without having to map everything out in the piano roll.
Same here. I use IOS garage band on an iPad constantly for demos/ideas etc. I also use it for live backing tracks on a touring gig. Using the Live Loops to record basic drum/bass tracks for each section of a song, and then pair it with an AirTurn 6 button Bluetooth switcher - and it does everything I need it to with no need for a laptop/interface! It’s an invaluable tool for when I want to make something but am sick of being in front of the computer. Sometimes I can’t believe it’s free.

I started out composing electronic music on Garageband ON IPAD. I believe Garageband is capable of putting ideas and notes together, but falls short on anything technical. When I tranferred to Logic Pro (about a year ago) the amount of control I had was overwhelming. Yet, I persevered. I've learned about so many more ways to improve my instruments. Some operations in GB are a lot easier than you guessed when you know some keyboard shortcuts and somehow hidden functions. E. g.: If you want to export only a part of a midi track as an audio you can select a loop or a region, then mark the checkbox "cycle or region" in the export menu and it won't render the whole song. Or if you want to access the plugins for a track, just press "b" on the keyboard when the correct track has been selected. I work exclusively in GB with a bunch of 3rd party plugins, Arturia KeyLab Essential and Universal Audio interface integration. The results may surprise some Logic users.

I literally created a full production song 100% fully in Garageband. It's fantastic when you know how to mix and master. Wow, I just bought my editing system and watched a lot of your videos. About 7hours ago I actually searched your channel for editing in garageband. Didn't find any results. Few hours later this video appeared. How great is that? Almost as if you made it while I was at work😅 Thank you. Amazing content❤
While you can compose music on just about any DAW, MPC, Maschine, or even in on a workstation keyboard, the real question is what would you actually prefer to use given a choice. I would never choose GarageBand given I have tools much better suited to the way I work. I feel claustrophobic in GarageBand.
When I first started watching I thought you were going to be snobby about using free decent software! But as usual it ended being informative and brilliant thank you 😊
I’m just getting into learning Hybrid Epic Orchestral Music. I used to use GarageBand. Now I use AUM Audio Mixer, Atom 2 & AudioShare. They’re not as easy as GarageBand when you want to ,are a full song. All that I don’t like about GarageBand is that you can only use 32 Tracks. With AUM Audio Mixer, Atom 2 & AudioShare. There’s no limit. It’s mainly used for live shows. I’m using it to replace GarageBand and other DAWs. That’s My Subjective View. A lot of people prefer Regular DAWs which I used to as well.

I tried to do things in GarageBand, but got incredibly frustrated very rapidly… more than likely because of my years in the studio. I like Logic much better. However, with that said, I CAN see GarageBand being incredibly helpful to write sketches (on a laptop) to be imported into Logic, then developed more fully. Overall, I really appreciate this video because it demonstrates that tools are tools and that the tools available now can be utilized as a means of learning and developing one’s talents. Bravo, Guy! 🥳
I’ve just found your channel and it’s prompted me to get in to some proper music theory! I’ve signed up for your course too. Really love your style 😄😄😄
Hi Guy i've had the pleasure of watching your videos for a long time but i don't think i've seen you talk about EQing at all i would love to hear your take on it & how to adjust your ear to make sure certain sounds aren't too loud
New to your channel here. I should check before commenting, but hope all of your videos are more or less this kind of thing. Live scoring sessions, plus your thinking on the matter are invaluable.
Great... in every sense... most remarkable "lil" detail... turning down the click ;) even listening through these ideas feel strange when I always here it. Anyway, thanx again. I am quite new here, and love it soooo much what you're doing. As a composer and studio owner with Cubase as my goto DAW it is great to feel so comfortably when the environment is known. Hugs from Germany.
The other thing you must remember to do is turn on the Master audio track and make sure you fade out all tracks on the Master or you'll have a much longer track than you intended on final mix.
Really enjoyed your scoring in garageband, hahaha. Perhaps next time, have (your version of) Hans Zimmer in the studio and make a compostion with pirates and carribean music 😁.
The advantage of GarageBand, in this context, is the way it strips out all of the fine detail work, to show the basic workflow of writing a soundtrack to a video. So I think this is a rather amazing video for that reason. I'd be happy to see more. It also demonstrates that one does not need $5000 in kit and gear and software and sample libraries to write music. But why do you keep saying you can't change the time signature? Click on the "4/4" in the time code display, and select your time signature. And, while there aren't markers such as you find in Logic or Cubase, there does exist a set of arrangement markers.
The word “epic” is overused these but once in a generation a film comes out that truly deserves the title. From the palpable horror of The Walk to searing triumph of the Gazing, Shoreline Walk captures our present cultural moment. Hey I was wondering if you could do a commentary on the Main Theme from Fallout 4 by Inon Zur. It starts out normal but veers off into this really confusing section, and finally seems to end as a completely different piece. I’d love to hear someone who really understands music explain what Zur is doing there.
Thanks for this video, I have been watching your channel for over a year and trying to get GB to do some of the amazing things you demonstrate. It has been a challenge but like in your video, if you dig in deep enough many of the things you want are mostly there. I appreciate your trick about time markers with the tempo track. Pretty cool. I was shouting and pointing when you couldn't find the plug-in section. Obviously you heard me and went back to demonstrate it. ;-)
Someones got a new toy drone 😂 Seriously though GB is a great sketchbook for ideas with quite a good array of tools for laying down tracks to be exported into Logic for the more advanced stuff. Great video as usual Guy. Oh and id love you to do a video as your alter ego (he needs a name) as he sounds like a diamond geezer 😊
Thank you so much for this video! I'm the director of the Rise Of the Brave Tangled Dragons fanfilm, B4: Guardians, and, since this fanfilm started almost 11 years ago, I wanted to create its original score myself! Yes, it's still in the storyboarding with audio (aka voice acting; the voice acting is phenomenal by the VAs that were chosen. My characters? Ehhh...not so much) stage, but I'd like to eventually put a score to it! I know now that this is not the longest a film has taken to come out, however it has been a passion project of mine pretty much since almost the end of my senior year of high school! Anyway, I've rambled on long enough...if anyone is interested in watching the fanfilm, please let me know, and I can redirect you to the fanfilm's CZcams channel. Oh, and if you're a passion animator (an animator who animates for fun), please let me know! We currently have one animator, and I don't want to overwhelm them, as the fanfilm is over an hour long, and it's over 800 storyboard panels. But please watch this video (the video my comment is below) first, if you find this comment!
Fantastic video! Two questions: 1. What book or resource do you recommend for someone know knows guitar (12 years classical) but wants to learn piano better to make scoring go faster? 2. Would you be able to do a video like this in Reaper? It seems to be in the middle of GB and Cubase, Logic, etc as far as function and cost.
Chance, you might be not the only one who would want to get GarageBand iOS tutorials from Guy. Would you like to start a petition on Ablebees requesting Guy to do that? Others would support your petition.
Hi, guy! Love your videos! I’ve learned a lot over the years. I’m curious as to if you’ve made a video of your actual recording “space”, or what appears to be your “sunroom” or whatever folks call it. 🤷♂️ Is it separate from your house or attached? Is it more like a greenhouse or a gardening shed? I’m thinking about building one for myself at my house. I live in North Dakota and I’d love to have the kind of views you appear to have from your space. Do you feel it’s secure enough in your neighborhood? Sorry for all the questions, but I’m very curious. And I want to copy you.😂
We have Garageband on an iPad, but there ain't no tempo track there - not, that is, one that can change the tempo mid-song that we can find. When it says, 'Tap on Tempo', you just get a small box with the tempo in it. Help? x
@@ThinkSpaceEducation You're actually right. I think I had the same problem when I first looked at GB a few years ago. I love your attitude, though. And always enjoy your videos. I love that you obviously do SOME editing, but then you leave stuff like that in there for us to enjoy your humanity ;) You rock, Guy!
And you haven't even touched all the free kits you can download for it. For a "DAW" with the cost of "free" it's really good value over many other offerings. *free as in comes with a purchase of an Apple device of choice.
I produced a home album on Garageband in 2005. Then life got in the way and I didnt get back to producing music as a hobby for 14 years. I now use Cubase and Reason. I enjoyed Garageband but it falls short compared my current DAWs Cubase and Reason. An unfair comparison I know.
Great effort, but I stick with Reaper, because it's so versatile and powerful. And I use synths instead of samples, sometimes on the drums I use a sample, but very rare on other instruments.
@@ThinkSpaceEducation But I'm making video's for CZcams with remastered tracks, and since my favorite free app is taken out of business, I might use GarageBand as replacement. Thanks for pointing me in that direction. Reaper is overkill for that kind of content. End good, all good.
Hi, my name is Crispian. I was wondering if I could ask for your advice? I really want to be a music producer and wondered if you thought I should consider this as I am 48 and autistic. My learning process is completely different to a neurotypical person and I need time, patience and the right environment to achieve this. I have been playing around with some sample apps and I am at the point of buying the equipment for a small home studio. I don't play any instruments but my autism is very sensory and I have an amazing ear for sound, I also have the ability to hyper focus. I would really appreciate your advice as your videos are a great help to me.
Hi Guy, I know my question isn't related to the video, but I'm going to ask it here. Can a mini-pc (like Geekom, Minisforum, Beelink, etc) be enough to make orchestral music?
Paul, you might be not the only one who would want to get a video on MixCraft 10 DAW from Guy. Would you like to start a petition on Ablebees requesting Guy to make on video on this topic? Others would support your petition.

2. Would you be able to do a video like this in Reaper? It seems to be in the middle of GB and Cubase, Logic, etc as far as function and cost.
Golden!
Great stuff as usual, I like to use Cubasis to put together simple little themes, all great fun! Cheers Dave
Hey Guy, you forgot your sunglasses on the bench nearby the beach!
Ah! Editing error
@@ThinkSpaceEducation Always leave some things for the fans to nitpick on, it drives engagement. 😉
I'm glad I wasn't the only one that noticed that! LOL
Hello sir, Thanks for the video! Could you please do some GarageBand iOS tutorials as well? I think the iOS version is a great Daw too!
Chance, you might be not the only one who would want to get GarageBand iOS tutorials from Guy. Would you like to start a petition on Ablebees requesting Guy to do that? Others would support your petition.
Really cool video! Very usefull for me whos a teacher in high school.
Next challenge: Garageband...ON IPAD! :D
Help? x
I love it!!!!
Me at 19:50 yelling at my computer: "IT SAYS PLUG-INS RIGHT THERE IN THE BOTTOM PANEL!!" LOL
I know I know - took me a while to find it. To be fair it’s not that intuitive!
Guy, you can change time signature at the top right next to tempo :)
Also this takes me back to 2010 - love it
I think he was referring to changing time signature at various points in the project -- a VERY common thing in film scoring
Exactly
And you haven't even touched all the free kits you can download for it. For a "DAW" with the cost of "free" it's really good value over many other offerings.
*free as in comes with a purchase of an Apple device of choice.
Very true
I produced a home album on Garageband in 2005. Then life got in the way and I didnt get back to producing music as a hobby for 14 years. I now use Cubase and Reason. I enjoyed Garageband but it falls short compared my current DAWs Cubase and Reason. An unfair comparison I know.
Its a great simple DAW to start with but runs out of steam pretty quickly
Now make it 10,000 beats long so I can listen to it and get my steps in! But seriously, I enjoyed the video/process.
Great effort, but I stick with Reaper, because it's so versatile and powerful. And I use synths instead of samples, sometimes on the drums I use a sample, but very rare on other instruments.
Fair enough!
@@ThinkSpaceEducation But I'm making video's for CZcams with remastered tracks, and since my favorite free app is taken out of business, I might use GarageBand as replacement. Thanks for pointing me in that direction. Reaper is overkill for that kind of content. End good, all good.
Guy you can indeed change time signature. its the same as logic
this composer can write music with or without anything
Dear sir, need to know something urgently…where is that awesome beachfront?
East wittering West Sussex
You always enjoining our studio wz that coffee
:)
Is that the Witterings?
Hi Guy,
I know my question isn't related to the video, but I'm going to ask it here. Can a mini-pc (like Geekom, Minisforum, Beelink, etc) be enough to make orchestral music?
Insight and musical wisdom, or Entertainment value? Still trying to decide why I watch your videos 😂 Bit of column A, bit of column B 🤣
I am wondering how do you work with other studios and don't use pro tools? Or do you also use pro tools? Isn't pro tools the industry standard?
yup plugins!
You are awesone
Thank you
Impressive!, but can you compose something on a Commodore 64? ;-)

"The S E A ! !"
Hello Guy. Can you play any other instruments beside keys?
Yup lots quite badly
Hi Guy can you do a video on MixCraft 10 DAW
go away scammer
Paul, you might be not the only one who would want to get a video on MixCraft 10 DAW from Guy. Would you like to start a petition on Ablebees requesting Guy to make on video on this topic? Others would support your petition.
It looks like the garage band has everything that logic Pro has
Nope..... it looks like logic but there are a tonne of things it cant do- its a great place to start though
No way!
Just goes to show it is not the gear that counts ... It is about talent.
In one sense the only software that matters is the software between your ears
Dorset?
West Sussex
@@ThinkSpaceEducation Ah I did wonder. Very nice views. :-)
If you haven’t got any dosh and you’ve got a Mac..
I prefer Garijband to Garajband.
