Obsessed Garage Wheel & Tire Cleaning Procedure

- In this video I go over the wheel and tire cleaning procedure I use on my cars. I always clean my wheels and tires before I wash the rest of the car, it makes the most sense to me. The Sennheiser wireless mic had a problem while recording this video & I didn't know. The audio was fixed as much as it could be in post-production.

I’ve been copying this process for 3 years now and I’m always asked why my wheels are so clean... Great video.
Got my Incredibrush flat and wool wheel mitt. Worked flawlessly and I'm thrilled I went with these. Great stuff!!!!
Your M3 is perfect. I wouldn't change a thing. Great work!
Thanks to you Matt I have adopted this method for cleaning my tires and wheels. It is a real time saver and it gets the job done completely the first time every-time!!!!! You have a golden mind
Thanks man!
Exactly what most of us have been waiting for 🙌
Great video especially the last tips. Thanks for sharing all these info
haha the lenghts you go through, back and forth with the car is brilliant :)
Try spraying your P&S or similar product on the wheel wooly or brush after you wet it it gets me great results and keeps the the effectiveness/lubrication going a little longer. 🤙🏼💯
I love your videos, man! They’re so therapeutic and extremely informative!👌🏻
Thanks for watching!
The OG is great as you narrow down the nonsense and provide a damn good choice of product. Happy 2019 and 2020 for you and your family.
I tried brake buster in a foam cannon....wow! Loved the process!
When you said just tell me where to get the products so that I can buy them. That hit home for me - that's all I every want when I am looking for solutions. Thank you for that. Ordering from you right now....
Great video. The wheels look sick!
can't thank you enough for all the info you give in your videos
Thanks for watching man.
@@ObsessedGarage I'm moving back to Florida pretty soon. what are the chances of a 1on1 detailing session with you.
Matt, I love your idea of constantly improving.I'd compare it to the traditional Toyota philosophy of kaizen. Your passion really shows in your attention to detail!!
Just woke up from a short nap. Great video. That car and those wheels = VERY sweet!
lol what a coincidence. Great job Matt!
Always like before seeing vid.........never disappointed
Love from the uk
Now I need to get a tool bucket!
I use the pf22 and brake buster straight and it makes cleaning so much faster. I also use it for maintaining but that's with ik9. They both perform awesomely but it's faster with the pf22
So nice i can use the finger mitt and get to the whole wheel. Open spokes for the win.
Matty a Tool fan? Yes! Can't wait for Aug 30th. Front wheel gap looks fine when you're looking at it from a normal distance.
Yes sir!
you said it man: “just tell me what to buy!” I am so DONE with trial and error!
I’ve been watching your Milwaukee Power tools vids. I had no idea you created Auto Detailing vids too. An unexpected excellent surprise! 😊😊😊
Many seats available with a channel, groove or gap in the middle that prevents the low blood circulation. Mountain Bike shorts are hard to choose, a bunch of pockets, baggy and if you like the pad Comfort, you hate the pockets color or design. Best thing is to use road bike shorts, and if you need pockets get some shorts that can keep your ass cool. They also sell dedicated liner shorts with a pad, to wear any short you want. Pearl Izumi, and sugoi, were my top choices over 7 years ago, today I would hope they still are, since they were expensive and very durable. 😉
A few things from my experience:
Hyde's immediately after cleaning a wheel works best, especially on factory e92 m3 rotors. The time it takes to wash the rest of the car and spraying after is enough to get the rust started. Hyde's seems to form a barrier that holds through the rest of the wash process assuming you don't blast the rotor (why would you?).
Wheel cleaner in a foam cannon is imprecise, messy and overly diluted. You can even see it in this video - the product separates and runs off the wheel so quickly (I get your wheels are coated). The old fashioned spray bottle still works best.
Nitpick point: tire dressing first, then final wipe of wheel. Wheel wipe removes excess shine on wheel from application
just pulled my wheels off my ram to do a deep clean and polish wheels yesterday. with the factory wheels it has chrome plastic shell on the outside with a dull aluminum finish on the inside.
I really want to see a first wash video of the M5! Preferably at night.
Well, a bottle with a wider bottom for the PF22 ain't exactly rocket science, so "working on it"should be done by breakfast 👍🏻
fischputza my biggest annoyance with the pf22, I have to leave them filled so they don’t fall off the shelf. Griots worked out the correct bottle
@@samcas707 I know, I tackled this issue with a QC mounted to the shelf
@@fischputza I hang my PF22s by the neck.
Making a highly chemical resistant bottle isnt as easy as you think.
@@SWAGURA It's shampoo or diluted wheel cleaner...nothing really aggressive
Not sure who knows about this however you can mod the PF22 using a griots bottle so that it doesnt fall over. Ive done it to both if mine and I have no regrets! How to video can be found on a channel by the name of MTM. Yall should check it out!
Nice!
I love your videos guy. Definitely one of the top IMO. Hopefully I can win that dream garage giveaway.
I like to hit the brakes with some Hyde's after I have washed the wheels, and before I start washing the car. For some reason my brakes start to "rust" really fast. But doing it this way stops that. Then I hit them again at the very end, like you do in the video.
They too hot if that happens
@@kenshien544 Nope - this was on a hybrid car with regen "brakes" in addition to normal disc brakes. So the disc brakes had not been used.
A fellow Tool fan? Good man!

@@ObsessedGarage 11 days to go!
I’m here too boys!
SIGNATURE WHEEL. Trust me.. talk to Phil. Quality is 2nd to none.
Honestly, I’ve worn all the different brands of shorts, padded, not padded, padded under shorts etc and eventually I turned away and either just Mt Bike in my compression shorts or just the shorts I wear on a daily basis. I found the soreness really isn’t that bad unless I ride for a couple hours for several days in a row. This is mostly because I have a comfortable seat. I use a WTB Pro Gel. I no longer care about skinny race seats because I don’t race and don’t want to wear bulky shorts. My bike (Ibis Mojo HD3) is full carbon so the offset in weight isn’t a big deal.
I’m out here waxing my wheels at 2am wired up from the club
Great vlog as always. Tool on Spotify🤘 You asked the question about mountain bike supplies, I recently bought some Essence cycling glasses on Amazon UK. They are basically Oakley Jawbreaker fakes but much better as they are cheap. I love them and don’t use my Jawbreakers anymore. Just an idea.
Another great demonstration Matt! I have used Hyde’s for a couple of years. Seems to work well. I will be buying the gallon size when I replenish now that you have it.
If you revamp the foam cannon can you mention to them to use something like a nalagene wide mouth bottle. Make it so you don’t need to use a funnel and the bottle are almost indestructible.
Much better, easier, and cost efficient process than having to buy an IK foamer. Was always wondering why detailer s used IK foamers for wheels instead of just having a dedicated foam canon for them.
Because the IK's are new to the market and alot of detailers/youtubers just push products
IKs are convenient for jobs where you might have limited water supplies like mobile detailers.
Hi matt, i noticed your swapping over to a quick connect attachment on your hose nozzle when washing off the wheels.
May i ask what attachment your using, as its very handy when your doing a dedicated wheel clean. Thanks.
I have ceramics on both my daily’s, f80 m3 and jag ftype r, and it’s liberating not having to deal with brake dust, wheel cleaners and the rust. I build my cars with ceramics principally for the cleanliness and maintenance. I just use autofinesse revolution for wheels and underbody, which is a slightly stronger body shampoo. I did buy the p&s for tyres but think i still prefer the adams t&r, the smell of it mainly as my washbay is indoors
sam cas I envy you. I bought my f90 M5 first edition off the showroom floor without the ccb option thinking ahhh I’ll be fine. Welp, Out of all the cars I’ve ever owned amgs, porsches, Range Rover, the f90 brake dust is so bad that even after one week of daily driving, the brake dust begins to etch the wheel and I’ll have to break out the clay and iron x. I have the same issue with the brembos on my svr but it’s not as bad. I’m never buying a car without ccb’s
Kevin Yao hahaha my car choices are dictated by ceramic availability these days, what makes it even harder is the Germans are cost cutting with ceramics on front only, and those that do put a ceramic rotor in rear, put it behind an ugly single piston slider caliper they just paint - or in case my old rs3, don’t even bother painting to match. Fortunately the f80 ceramic setup is a proper brembo 4 piston caliper in rear, it’s the only application bmw has done this with
If eliminating dust is that important, you can always get ceramic pads for the iron rotors and eliminate most of it.
seashackf1 ceramic pads on iron rotors aren’t the best setup, and when it comes to brakes I stick with oe fitment, just not worth the risk
Low dust pads do make a difference. I’m using Hawk HPS and they don’t have the initial bite of oem but they are decent and have no dust.
Dry Ice cleaning. It is the finest cleaning process.
Appreciate the honest reviews from all the products you use, really helped me narrow down my selection in products to use or to switch to.
APEX wheels have just released their Forged wheel line, maybe something of interest. They did mention some info about the Titan7 wheels, would be interesting to hear your views on it.
pacman111 haha. Get em. They aren’t certified. Death trap!
@@KRBY555 I assume you are talking about the Titan7? That is what I meant when I said Apex mentioned the Titan7, just didn't want to say it before people read it themselves. I found it pretty interesting that they weren't officially certified.
would love to see mountain bike reveiws
Yes definitely! I detail cars as well and mountain biking is a hobby of mine.
I have wheels with ceramic rotors. What wheel soap would you use?
I see you have a griots portable bench. May I suggest the pad cover for it. It helps this senior driveway detailer :)
Is it just me or does anyone else absolutely love the sound of that pressure washer
Dude Titan 7 Wheels are freaking amazing! I am trying to buy a set myself for my F80 at the moment. Love these wheels.
There is just something a little off about them. I can't quite put my finger on what it is, but I doubt they will last very long for me.
@@ObsessedGarage Have your thoughts on these wheels changed since this comment? Have you noticed any QC or performance issues with them? Thanks!
I am a big mountain biker and I use Yeti Cycles shorts. They are really soft and i don’t chafe. If you were looking for a good quality brand.
Specialized Phenom saddle. I highly suggest trying one out. They are nice & wide, have a nice channel for prostate relief & are great saddles for bigger hip guys like yourself. I have sat on so many saddles, and nothing is as comfortable as the phenom.
Phenom Comp is the heaviest one in the phenom lineup and thus has more cushion than the phenom pro. $120 and absolutely worth a try. It has made a massive difference for me on shorter rides and even ultra endurance all day rides.
www.specialized.com/us/en/phenom-comp/p/156636?color=233022-156636
Great tip. I'll get one of those to try.
After another miserable taint experience, I just order this one to try.
Obsessed Garage good deal. Did you get the widest model phenom comp?
Obsessed Garage also. You’ll find that the more you ride, the more riding will be comfortable.
But I'm definitely interested in those wheels, I sent you a message on facebook. I can't stand having OEM 20 spoke wheels. Drives me nuts!
Hey Matt, I just wanted to ask do you dilute brake buster in your foam cannon or?
I received my P&S brake buster from the OG store today along with a nano skin pad and hand strap... cant wait to test them out.
Hi
What is the foam sprayer your using? Your set up is brilliant
When the PF23 comes out my PF22 will be my brake buster foam cannon instead of the crappy chemical guys one I’ve been using
Cool vid. Thank you.
What is your dilution on the carpro pearl in the spray bottle. 1-1?
Correct 1:1 (50/50)
Great video :)
What dilution do you use for the Perl on tires when you spray it on your brush ?
I think he uses it straight up. From the tire cleaning package video that still had it in it.
Would the P&S from a foam cannon remove old waxes and sealants. Like a strip wash do you think?
No, it shouldn't.
Is there mtn bike trails in Florida? You need to go to southern Utah. Check out a spot called Gooseberry Mesa
I dont know if its the coating im using (SystemX) but i started using Wolfgang uber diluted QD strength on my wheels daily. I first use my Worx and blow out any sand, pebbles sitting on the bottom of the wheel. Spray down and wipe with a MF towel. Creatures or the Kirkland towels i like for the wheels. Wheels are black and ive been keeping a close eye for marring and there’s literally none. Weekly ill do a complete tire/wheel wash.

Boom!
Matt, I know you are not a fan of the IK foamer but if you had to use it, how would you mix it in the foamer?
5:1 or a little closer to 6:1 in the IK.
Is that blue brush ez or speedmaster ?, my task for you is to see if you can source replacement black tips for the end of the brush, my brush is still in good condition but the tip is braking up & has scratched my wheels!!😩
They are the same thing. EZ makes the Speedmaster.
What blower do you use to dry off the wheels, tires, and the car? Also where can I find that stool you were using?
EGO 580
I’m not keen on coating my paint (I like the look and process of sealants / wax) but I would say coating wheels with ceramic is a game changer.
My question if does iron x type cleaners ruins the ceramic?
No, they don't.
I also have big brembo brakes with track pads and two piece racing rotors, and the only wheel cleaner that works for me is iron remover. All other wheel cleaners have not been effective. The brake dust on my pads also immediately turn into rust, leaving heavy brown stains on my wheels almost immediately. The only thing that works are iron remover. How does this product work on removing iron?
Coating the wheels would really help with that. This should do well with brake dust if you clean regularly. You could spot treat with straight Iron X when needed.
Hey Matt, do you sell or can you source or know of a "Bottle Cap" for the MTM PF22 bottle? I'd love to dilute into a whole MTM bottle and then cap it until my next use. Thanks.
I was thinking of the same thing!
My friend has used a different bottle on the PF22 so it shouldn't be that difficult to find a cap.
I'll look into it.
I keep a premixed supply of wheel cleaner solution in the F-style, wide mouth jugs. Get them from Amazon. It’s all premixed and ready to go, fast and simple.
Good, good, I was looking for an excuse to buy that Pressol bottle. :)
Wait for the 2nd iteration to come.
What’s a Pressol bottle? Thx
I use the IK and I think I’ll find another use for it and get a dedicated foam cannon for the wheels. It makes perfect sense NOT to dilute it as the water action from making the foam does it on the fly. Do you dilute Perl ? Praying for my power washer to die, I want that kranzle setup. I might help it...😂😂😏
I use Perl 50/50.
Hi Matt. 1st off, thank you for doing all the research and testing you do. Im a 53 yr old business owner, father and husband. I want the best of the best and you have earned my trust so much so that now i just buy the products you endorse. With regards to brake buster, the wheels on my 2020 Audi S5 Cabrio are not coated. Im using your suggested 60/40 ratio in my foam cannon but still finding grime and dirt after cleaning. Wheels are oem painted/aluminum finish. Any suggestions on how to get them sparkling without having to coat?
Sounds like you are just missing spots when cleaning with you mitt.
I dont use a mitt, only brushes. I know you use one so i guess Im going to be using one too. Thanks for replying so quickly. You're a good man. Matt. Smart, honest, dedicated and diligent. Stay safe. Im up in Toronto, Canada and am saddened the virus has returned in the US with such a vengeance. Wear a mask when social distancing is not assured. The auto detailing world (and your family) need you to stay healthy and continue to lead us forward in this industry.
Best, Mark.
LOUIS GARNEAU MTB Shorts - Dirt or Dawn
Not to take anything away from a through process. If you're a pro and doing customers wheels this it's going to get the job done and well. Now if you have a ceramic coating on the wheels and calipers they will clean right up with the same soap and water you use to wash your vehicle. My wife Mercedes sheds an enormous amount of brake dust, is sometimes neglected but will clean right up with just a pressure washer, regular soap and water and the same assortment of brushes in the video. Thoughts?
Ever try the glove?
playback at 2x is a must
Matt just a heads up sitting on a mountain bike seat gives you a much higher possibility of prostate cancer. The rate is very high in professional bicyclists. Sitting on the prostate and cutting of the blood supply will harm it. Now that I saved your life I deserve that 1M ; )) Besides great minds think alike I have some great ideas.
Great...way to freak me out. Ha, ha...
@@ObsessedGarage Yeah, I would rather tell someone than be silent because that's the easy thing to do. P.S our OCD is really tiresome it's silly hahaha ; ))
@@ObsessedGarage What if I tell you that every man on this planet, given if he lives long enough, would develop prostate cancer, it's just how our hormones work as we age. I'm a doc, and my urology professor told us this many times.
@@nikolazivkovic8146 Interesting, I don't doubt it either. I've heard most men whom died due to natural causes (age) actually have prostate cancer. Though it doesn't contribute to their death and has little effect on them.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't mind your business when cycling, in my opinion.
Only took Tool like 10 years to get with the program, finally!
Side Note: Thoughts on Apex Wheels? Looking at slapping those one my e92 M3.
I never liked the look of Apex.
@@ObsessedGarage Fair enough, I liked their EC-7 model. But, I think I'll be picking up HRE FF01 or FF15s..
When are y'all putting the new shirts in the store?
We should have them up tomorrow!
seriously need to see some real photo shoot or rolling shots of this car
Will this be safe on color fading? Meaning more towards the calipers....
Should be fine.
I gotta ask Matt, why do you start cleaning the barrel of the wheel from the bottom up? either way works I guess, since you rinse the brush after every couple spokes you do. I guess I'm just wondering if there is a reason as to why you do so...
No reason. I just pick a spot and roll.
@@ObsessedGarage the new OG Tire Dressing arrives tomorrow, I cant wait to try it out!
can you please educate me on why Hyde’s serum is beneficial? doesn’t the rust build up on the rotor disappear after you drive around anyway? thanks!
Yes, it disappears from the rotor and all over your wheel.
ah, i see! thanks for the reply!
Would you use Adams wheel & tire cleaner in a foam canon as well?
You could.
You could use any wheel cleaner theoretically? Though I doubt he’s even used Bilt Hamber auto wheels to say what ratio he dilutes it at if at all.
Have you ever considered simplifying the process even more by using a spray on spray off sealant on the wheels at every wash? I use CarPro Hyro2 with tremendous success, and I live in Wisconsin which has extreme salt & road grime. I don't have your resources or a garage, but manage to keep my daily driver in like new condition with your recommended products and techniques within reason.
Hydro2 eventually builds up and is very contaminent prone.
Same for gyeon wet coat?
Can you use wheel cleaners with the purple stuff on carbon ceramics?
HyperGhost ceramics don’t give off iron deposits so you won’t get any purple reaction beyond regular atmosphere fallout
Bingo
what bottles are those you use to apply the tire cleaner?
Pressol. www.obsessedgarage.com/collections/bottles-sprayers
Brake buster claims to be safe on ceramic coating, but can’t be left on for too long- Quoted from P&S themselves. And brake buster also has rust inhibitors so do you think it should be enough to prevent that annoying rust on rotors or should I also purchase the other product you use?
I use both.
whats the word on tire dressing?
👍
Are u the flash? you said you were gonna get some water for the bottle and it took 0.1 second!
My problem is the Adams wheel cleaner makes my rotors rust almost INSTANTLY! Drives me NUTS!
The Acorn don’t use a wheel cleaner that bleeds purple. I think Adams is very aggressive and overkill for maintenance washing. I only break out Adams when my wheels are absolutely trashed. For day to day washing, use this product in the video or switch to ceramic brake pads :).
@@kevinyao1560 I agree 100% but it is nice having a good wheel cleaner with iron remover in it for shot wheels.
Is it ok to use wheel cleaner in that foam cannon? I contacted the manufacturer and they told me not to use wheel cleaner in it, only regular car soap.
Yep, I do.
@@ObsessedGarage You're just trying to get me to buy more :) But seriously, thank you!
is the car pro pearl
diluted???
I'm using it 50/50.
What exhaust setup do you have ? Sounds crazy
Full Dinan
What does pulling back and forth do? Does he still do this?
Dries the rotors with the brake pads preventing the rust.
Hey Matt are you doing an audio upgrade on the M3? Also can we get more home theatre videos?
Yes, I will be doing that. I should do an update.
Obsessed Garage Exciting!
What nozzle is that on the water hose?

When you will upload videos in 4k? :)
I went back to 1080/60. I like 60 fps much more.
what about underneath the car since you mentioned the inside side of the rotors? also what about under the hood?
Underneath generally doesn't need much in FL. Hood I do when I paint correct.
Well i drive in all weather conditions here and it makes a mess, specially the salt on the roads in winters. But in FL is a different story i guess.
