The concept is great but a round mirror is needed to break up the rectangular doors on either side and the now rectangular and quite tall cabinet below. I also think the mirror you used an example has a frame that is way too thick and again adds to the bulkiness of the already tall cabinet and doors. Not to mention, the hall space she’s working with is one narrow tall area between two doors, so a tall cabinet is great like you recommended for storing things away but you need that break with a round mirror to make the space seem more calm and well balanced.
I think the rectangular mirror gives harmony and a theme to the rectangles and squares in the room. Round Mirror doesn’t belong as well. I personally just think it’s the mirror’s frame that is off
Right!!! Closed storage for dog toys??!!?? How are the dogs getting them??? The reason we use baskets like these is so we can pick up and when the dog wants a toy they can go grab one. Putting them in a closed door makes no practical sense. Shoes on the floor also just happens. Normalize houses we live in instead of look at.

I don’t agree with this, the cabinet is too blocky for that area it really tightens the feel of that wall. The mirror was a random shade of grey that just does not go with anything in that room. The circular mirror made it look so much more flowy, however visually the baskets at the bottom did have to go. Wait….. did I just hear a designer advocating being practical, functional, sensible, AND stylish? Lady, you are a unicorn and I am signing up for this!
I liked the mirror. I would have changed up the table for a bookshelf type of concept so it’s open & easy to see/grab things. And there’s more shelves to store items rather than keeping them on the floor.
I actually love my closed cabinets for shoes 😅 only issue is my husbands work boots don’t fit and I added a basket just for them that I ended up using for something else so they just sit beside the cabinet all by them selves 😂
I probably only works because my toddlers shoes live in my car, they go on in my car and off before he comes inside and his boots live in the boot, this is because he hates shoes and will take them off anyway before I can drive somewhere so just put them on on arrival
I love that you have us focus on the function first. I was reading other people's comments. I don't necessarily think there is a right and wrong. I think you have to know what is right for you. I personally, would love to have a closed cabinet that would fit my shoes, boots, gloves, scarves, etc... Very practical, keeps them clean, I can find them. It would look very tidy and clean.
People keep getting annoyed with what she chooses to put in, but nobody seems to understand that she's trying to build a *concept.* She's not telling people EXACTLY what they should be putting there.
Hooks anywhere hidden is not likely to be utilized either. A drop zone is just that, a casual, quick, clutter magnet. Even a well designed traditional "mud room" bench and cubby system will pile up everywhere requiring constant maintenance. It's the nature of the beast; get over it. There are some spaces that are too narrow and limited to offer up brilliant, stylish, tidy solutions. That wall space between two doors is WAY too small to squeeze in a shoe organizer cabinet. People kick off their shoes at the door, put on their cozy alternatives (like slippers) and walk away. Putting shoes and bags away is an on going problem that isn't likely to get solved
People who do these home decode rearrangements always add furniture that is sooo large and then shrink and act like it will fit into the small space. Here you can tell that this cabinet is a full-size cabinet (judging from the size of the shoes) and will never fit into that wall space in real life. I definitely prefer the before. She could replace the baskets with just one similar-ish container and put her shoes (no more than 2 pairs at once under the table.
I recently cleaned my home and reorganized to work with my bf and my habits, I have a platter on our table for a drop zone and have worked in places for my dogs toys and accessories.
Round mirror with the shoe cabinet works best. Oversize show cabinet with rectangular mirror, which is too big for the small space, looks crowded, and lacks visual interest.
With the second option, you still have to put things away, though. You're not improving anything functionality-wise. You're just hiding some of the stuff instead. So now instead of dropping things into a basket, you now have to open a door and place the item inside. Or place it on a shelf. I say do what works best for yourself, your family, and your area. Also, I like the round mirror better.
The big old white mirror does not make it look attractive, it makes it look cheap along with the press wood cheap holder where did she get her training Sauder ???
In terms of functionality, half the shoes wouldn't have fit in those shoe cubbies. Not very functional when you still need to put your shoes on the ground because the drawers aren't tall enough. Furthmore, that mirror is meant for a bathroom and completely takes over the area versus accents it.
"You're never gonna put those shoes away" in a closed cabinet. Maybe YOU won't, but I'm super happy with my closed shoe storage and never leave my shoes out. It's almost like what is actually functional is different for different people.
A rectangular mirror makes the whole room feel very blockish The other thing I’d say is that some people have memory issue or item blindness with cabinets. Put something in a cabinet and you won’t remember what’s in there or where your stuff is. For some people having the items visually available is what helps them stay organized. So the baskets where you can see in the shoes you always look at etc. While I agree with the bowl - a lot of people with dogs/pets will try to avoid heavy items on unsturdy units where they can be knocked over. A lot of things this is because of the item is knocked over it can damage the floors or it can hurt the animal. (No body wants to see their animal run a corner skid into a table and knock over a 10lb-15lb object which lands ontop of their pet harming them if not breaking bones.) so a lot of the time entrances like that will have hooks instead where keys can be placed and not knocked over. A good solution to the bowl is a very small hanging strip of up to 4 hooks where you can put gloves/hats/leashes/vests/collars/keys (while coats may be kept in an entrance closet to reduce space.)
I think I'd just add a simple shoe rack underneath the existing console, find another spot for the baskets and add some vertical elements on either side of the mirror to frame it and fill that space.
Yep, you cant focus on beautiful console, mirror, decor cause of mess underneath... Recognize function, then add a piece of furniture that fulfills it in a stule you like
I like what you said there, 'decorating against their habits', I've never heard it put that way. But I've done it in so many places 😂 Currently doing a major overhaul of our small home and I hope to keep your words in mind better! *I totally have entry baskets for shoes. And it looks dumpy :/ Thanks for the wisdom!
A floor length, cut to space mirror means you can decoupage the back of the cabinet for a nice hidden accent. Or paint it Bauhaus orange. Something you only really see in a reflection. A message printed in reverse. I saw it at the homes of one of my art teachers. It lets you take advantage of a full reflection fur the space, including on cabinet sides & underneath. No worrying about shape, just something cut to size.
The before was fine, the top of the table needed a little more decor with tall and short pieces. Maybe put the mirror a little higher. They could get a low shoe rack and put it against the wall closer to the front door or on the wall opposite the entry table. The mirror you chose was atrocious, if you’re gonna give examples they should accurate representations. I think you chose the mirror to show an example of the size, but you can’t just pick any style because this is all about visuals so you should give the proper visual.
I've struggled with a family of 6 in Northern Ontario (Canada). Snowsuits, winter coats (car seat safe) winter boots (and 2nd pair winter shoes), hats, gloves, scarves x 6. Plus school bags, sippy cups, snack containers etc... I NEVER see set ups that look nice for a larger family that incorporate the realities of full winters. Do interior designers not exist in this reality? If you have solutions for this sort of thing, i'd love to see it. Keeping in mind kids tracking in slush/filthy wet boots EVERY day for 5-6 months of the year. We're building a house and the garage will attach to the basement so we'll have lots of space to build a mud room. I'm dreaming of spots to put knee high winter boots that catch the slush and space for people to change into slippers.
Thank you!!! I always think decorators are not for me bc my house is verh lived in. My wonderful, hard working and loving husband is super messy and I have learned to just accept this but I need someone to decorate so our house fits our living style bc our living style isn't gonna fit with most decorating styles.
Explain this. Why would you want dog toys inside a cabinet? Like obviously the person entryway dog picks up the toys as they please. Why give stupid advice?
Y'all these comments are wildly missing the point. The before was pretty but not functional. The shoes are everywhere, the dog toys and leashes are all piled up, the vase is asking to get knocked over and bits of plant detritus shaking off every time someone brushes against it. And the table is over the wood floor, not the runner or a mat. Wet or dirty shoes are sitting on or over the wood flooring, leading to damage over time. Decorating to look like a hotel lobby or smth is pretty but not useful. If you don't like this specific cabinet, the type of cabinet described still applies. If you prefer rounded over squared mirrors, the advice still applies. Personally, I prefer squared for functionality when I'm trying to see my entire outfit, top to bottom. I want to see what people on the street will see when I walk out the door. I like the looks of both kinds, depending on the room and the vibe, but for usability, the bigger screen is best. If you don't mind the look of clutter around a showpiece and don't care if your house is functional then I guess this doesn't apply to you, but if you want your stuff to work and look tidy all day this is actually really good advice. When I make an accessible place for people to put things, I don't even have to say anything, they automatically put their stuff there instead of literally anywhere and everywhere they can find a space. I put up a shelf, put out a basket, set out a mat and rack, get a little indoor recycling bin next to the little dust bin, suddenly things are on the shelf instead of the floor, clothes are in baskets instead of on chairs, shoes are in one corner instead of all over the hall, and recycling is in a bin instead of every counter waiting to go outside. It might not all look "pretty" but neither does mess and clutter everywhere. And I don't have time to run around clearing every surface everytime anyone uses anything all day long. Make it easier for people to clean up after themselves and they'll do it.
I can feel the stubbed toes now, I’d scrap the whole thing and find a location less busy. With so many doors right there in that hallway it must be high traffic, and tripping over shoes and furniture is inevitable
Or just put them away in your room so they don't smell the entry. There's always a scent when shoes are by the entry. Especially if one of y'all got stinky feet. Free up that space entirely and put a full-size mirror so I can see my whole fit.
An entryway is not a closet! It’s not where you store all your outdoor gear. If you have multiple people living there, that’s probably not enough space for what you need.
The concept is great but a round mirror is needed to break up the rectangular doors on either side and the now rectangular and quite tall cabinet below. Yeah i was thinking a big oval mirror would have been better than a rectangular one. The pendant light above could also be changed to a round one.😊
I would've used a larger oval mirror. The rectangular one makes the area too linear with the doors, cabinet and light fixture.
Yes or a trendy arch mirror leaning against wall not mounted
Yeah I liked everything else she said- but I think a large oval one would look REALLY great
Yeah, or a round one that's slightly bigger than the old one.

Yep, you cant focus on beautiful console, mirror, decor cause of mess underneath... Recognize function, then add a piece of furniture that fulfills it in a stule you like
I’d still keep the plant and the photo and the mirror but the bowl and the cabinet are great ideas. ❤
The new design is just piece of cake…
Personally I think the before is much nicer, the after I think is cold and has an unlived in look.
The first one looked a lot better tbh
A floor length, cut to space mirror means you can decoupage the back of the cabinet for a nice hidden accent. Or paint it Bauhaus orange. Something you only really see in a reflection. A message printed in reverse. I saw it at the homes of one of my art teachers.
It lets you take advantage of a full reflection fur the space, including on cabinet sides & underneath. No worrying about shape, just something cut to size.
Please share on your LTK page where the storage cabinet & mirror came from…thanks ❤
The big mirror was more for a vanity or bathroom.
Never put your keys near a door anyone robbing your house can also steal your car
Honestly I liked the original version only thing I’d change would be like the baskets at the bottom and add custom racks for shoes.
Where can I find that cabinet??? I need a link!
It’s from West Elm
As a utilitarian, I am ALWAYS thinking how to improve the use of space.
What makes it obvious their dog grabs its toys whenever it wants? Those baskets just look like storage to me
Me personally, I'd have used a higher open/closed storage cupboard to add height to the wall.
Looks great 😊
You are so right
I don't really like the after but I agree with the principle of functional decorating
Where can I buy that shoe cabinet? Love it❤
I love your channel
Love this! Ty❤😮😊
You’re more than welcome to come and help me decorate 🥲
I like that cabinet ! Where can I get it ?
It's me. Yep, I make these mistakes. Great feedback!
I have a shoe cabinet. Works perfectly fine.
I love this
Original design great
I can feel the stubbed toes now, I’d scrap the whole thing and find a location less busy. With so many doors right there in that hallway it must be high traffic, and tripping over shoes and furniture is inevitable
Where did you get the cabinet?
I’d also like to know where to get that cabinet. :)
Or just put them away in your room so they don't smell the entry. There's always a scent when shoes are by the entry. Especially if one of y'all got stinky feet. Free up that space entirely and put a full-size mirror so I can see my whole fit.
Life is too short to be so preoccupied with how others decorated their homes. Additionally, the before was better looking
An entryway is not a closet! It’s not where you store all your outdoor gear.
If you have multiple people living there, that’s probably not enough space for what you need.
Before looked better honestly. That second mirror is ridiculously large for that area and the round mirror looked better too.
Where to find cabinets like that?
Everybody's so creative 😅
