  • Ansible is used for various automation functions in modern networking. Within the CCNP Enterprise track, the exam blueprint tells us we need to have a cursory knowledge of tools like Ansible, with an understanding of the major capabilities. In other Cisco tracks such as DevNet or CCIE, we need to get much deeper into the inner workings of automation.
I’ve been using this in my own home lab with EVE-NG for some time. In this video I'll first explain some important characteristics and features of Ansible, and then we’ll take a practical look at this in a lab environment.

Hi Charles. Nice Video. Straightforward. I have one question: which Routers do you choose? I mean vIOS, IOS 3725 or IOS 7206? Thanks in advance.

I typically use something from the 3700 series, such as the 3725. That will perform most actions I want in my virtual lab, while not using a tremendous amount of resources. Thanks for watching!

Can eve-ng substitute for having an entire physical lab?

If you are interested in general networking (i.e. Cisco's Enterprise Infrastructure track), it is absolutely a valid substitute. I haven't used physical equipment in my own home lab for several years now, and I have not found EVE-NG lacking in any way. Cisco themselves are using virtualization in their CCIE labs now, and many CCIE training vendors use EVE-NG as a platform for their lab exercises.
I will say that this can still be challenging if you are interested in the Collaboration track. This is one Cisco path that seems to still require some physical equipment. I'll also point out that the DevNet Sandbox can fill in a lot of gaps, in terms of providing free virtual access to many expensive Cisco appliances. Thanks to all of these resources, I think home study labs are easier than ever to have these days.
