The Banks of Spey -- Scottish Fiddle Tune!

- Here is a tune called "The Banks of Spey." It was written by William Marshall, and is a strathspey. Usually, I've heard this tune played very slowly (most strathspeys are played pretty slowly..), which gives it a bit of an eerie melancholy feeling. I've never been to the River Spey, but since I'm a bit of a happy goofball, I thought I'd try to perk it up a little and play it a tad faster than normal.. It really gives the tune a completely different feel! It's kind of strange... Hopefully I haven't ruined it for anyone! In Colorado, we usually have lots of rapids on our rivers, so I was imagining a similar river..... ....
This is such a cool tune! It sounds "very Scottish" to me. I have only heard a few other versions of this tune, and it doesn't seem to be played very often where I live.. I wonder how popular it is among jam sessions in Scotland, and how they usually play it..?? If you have any suggestions of other versions of this tune that I could listen to, please let me know! I'd love to hear how other people play it! =)
The traffic got so noisy!! It was a little hard to film...
I hope you like this version!
Thank you for watching! =)

Thanks for posting Katy, that was wonderful!
I love dancing strathspeys with all the wonderful, beautiful strathspey tunes.
Five years later , and I'm still enchanted !
You are so delightful to watch and to hear play, Katy! You are very inspirational, and a super fiddler! Keep it up! I'm trying to learn your material! Thanks!
I love dancing strathspeys with all the wonderful, beautiful strathspey tunes
Beautifully enchanting. Thank you so much.
I'm from the Appalachians and our fiddle music sounds very similar, fascinating
Jobey That would be because there is a lot of Irish and Scottish ancestry there
Where do you think it came from?!?!? LOL
As a fellow resident of the Appalachians (southern to be exact) it brings back my childhood and the music I love above all else, thank you!
The Scotch-Irish a Social History by James Leyburn seems a reasonable account and is an interesting read.
Bluegrass came from Scotland and Ireland we put our own twist own it to make it bluegrass😂
Yeah! You make it look so easy yet it's beautiful the whole way thru. Everybody had to love that smile too.
You make the day better from string to smile, many thanks.
Excellent...wonderful...uplifting....amazing. A really great arrangement too. Very many thanks Katy.

Katy, bless you lady. You’ve got me dusting off my fiddle to take up where I left off years ago. Without doubt playing makes you happy. 🙂

so amazing makes my soul sing
wow !! that was awesome!!
You’re a very lovely fiddle player and that Scottish tune is beautiful!!
Brilliant - cheers from Los Angeles!
I laid down my fiddle years ago because I had to earn a bit for the family. Hearing this song, remembering playing it in bars...I'm getting the itch again! Ain't nothing so expressive as music and chief of among musicianship is the fiddle in my mind anyway!
Wonderful Performance !!!
so beautiful
I live near the Spey. I like the speed you're playing this tune at - it kind of feels rivery. 😃
I love it. So beautiful!!
I wish I could have the playback music so I can play over it with my violin.
*My new favourite song*
Great playing as usual, Katy. I really like this piece! I am working on this one on the viola. It is a bit tricky but I'll get it!
Fantastic
Very good playing! New subscriber here! I didn't know this kind of music before.
Thanks for showing! Cheers!

I'm amazed it'll probably take so long until just can become this good.
I**
LOL....love the out takes. Well done. Again, the background is so lovely.
Marie M Yay! Thank you! :D I'll try to add more outtakes in the future! All sorts of weird crazy things happen when making videos, and I think they add a bit more reality into everything. ^_^ I'm amazed at how green everything is right now! Usually it's much drier than it has been, but I love all the extra rain! =)
Damn Girl .... Brilliant playing!
Awesome!!!
CZcams is great, it dumps me in the randomest, bestest music imaginable :)
Bruce C sent me the link of you playing Dancing Bear. We had been discussing the tune while out on one of our walks earlier today. Once I listened to it, I went on to listen to other tunes. He could hear them, recognized your playing and came over to my computer to check them out.
We have now happily blown away a good hunk of the afternoon enjoying your tunes! Yes, by all means, continue on your musical path! :)
+Evelyn Roberts Thank you, Evelyn! I'm glad that you like the music! =) When I first started posting videos, no one was watching, and I felt fine posting the tunes...but now that people are starting to watch, it's kind of scary putting things out there on the Internet..... But, it has been fun so far, and all the nice, positive comments like your comment really inspire me to keep going! Thank you so much! =) I have all sorts of music ideas for the New Year, and I can't wait to get started on them! I hope you have a good Holiday Time and a happy New Year! ^_^
Brilliant...
your the best by far in my eyes x

WOW GOOD JOB YOUR AMAZING
I'm so glad to find this... I've learnt that Spey means something else than what it does in Australia.
really very good
So sweet :)
Three words: amazing
Beautiful music great great grandfather was a Fiddle maker up at Dufftown and would think this a fine tune to play!
Rannoc I live near Dufftown about 40 minutes away in a town called Buckie, I also play the fiddle : )
Love it :-)
AWESOME LOVE IT, HEY SMILEY LIKE TO SEE YOUR VERSION OF SCOTLAND THE BRAVE ALSO LOVED YOUR LIBERTY VIDEO, THANKS FOR BEING GENEROUS WITH YOUR GREAT TALENT AND SHARING IT WITH US
KaKaty, you really know how to make a fiddle sing! T. Ferris
Beautiful! Strathspeys are indeed usually slower, as you say, but I love the perky feel you've given to this one! I'm trying to imagine dancing a strathspey to this though - that would definitely be a workout! (Since strathspey dances tend to assume you have more time to get from one place to the next - compared to jigs or reels that are designed for fast movement.)
Estupendo !
very nice tune, i love it.
+duduche Thank you! I'm happy that you like it -- thank you for listening! =)
Love it! Well played!!! Definitely going to give this one a go :)
Patrick McLaughlin Thank you!! I've been addicted to this tune for the past few weeks. It's so much fun! : D

New Sub! Love The Music Its Absolutely Amazing!
+Ciel Phantomhive Thank you so much! I'm glad that you like the music! =)
You're an amazing player!
Yes - a beauty to hold :D
So I got a violin this xmas and I know it takes YEARS to be this good and that people tend to start when really young but I hope to ever be able to play this kind of music.
Love the raspy voice of the violin...
I've been to the River Spey and even swum in it. It's cold. Really cold, but when the temperature goes above 68 in Scotland that's when the average Scot's thermostat starts to malfunction and you'll find people cooling off in a freezing river.
You should visit if you get a chance.
You R mindblowing!
Beautiful young lady and very talented
Splendido sorriso !
Well done
Thanks for the Scottish tune, Katy, from the River Spey where the water makes good Whisky. To me, as a dancer, playing a Strathspey slower makes it more obviously Scottish. However, when not used for dancing, it’s common to find faster Strathspey tunes and songs. I like your fiddle tone.
Well done. Wish I was that good.
Very well played! I love how you included the software and equipment you used!! I am also a musician (I play both piano and the low irish whistle) and have thought of putting some music up on youtube, but was always curious what software and equipment other musicians used for their music videos. ^.^
+Christina LaPenna Hi Christina! Thank you for your nice comment, and for listening! =) There have been so many times where I would love how a video looks or sounds, only to never be able to find out what equipment they used or how it was made... It took me a long time to learn about decent sample libraries, so I hope it might save some musicians a lot of headaches by putting all of the software in the description! =) Creating music like this has really taught me to appreciate the talent of music producers -- I have learned that they are the ones who do most of the heavy lifting behind creating an album. I'm sad that they never seem to get proper recognition for their hard work helping an artist sound great. =/
I hope you post some music! =) Being able to play the piano is something that will really help creating compositions, especially if you use keyboard-generated MIDI tracks with sample libraries! I think it is so much fun putting together little videos of the tunes, and it's even more fun to look back on them! : D It's kind of like creating a music diary. ^_^
WOW....... Beauty
I play your music while I play D&D
. . . and always this little smile that says a lot without wanting to say it (Julio Iglesias).
your amazing, I wish I could play as good.
You will always be loved.
Great playing! And love the tunes. I guess the tempo is OK 👍
