This is my favorite build on CZcams right now, always liked the Unimogs. You don't see many of these in the U.S. especially older ones. Still remember the first one I saw around 40 years ago in Buffalo, New York and only seen a couple in person since. You're really covering every detail. So far looks great!

Frame and body grounds omitted after restorations is a major cause of premature battery and cable failures.
Having worked at a MB dealer and owning a UNIMOG, I had connections with the MB parts department. Many of the parts had become unavailable because of the age of the model. I actually got the last master cylinder. The loose steering was caused by the nut on the end of the steering box being loose. My local VW dealer was looking at Land Rover Defenders but ended up buying the Unimog.

What a great way to start a Friday morning, I woke up to the notification Team army trucks posted a new video... Great work buddy, man she's looking superb.
Just recently Aldi (Australia) had what they described as a Swedish(?) Stillson (or Monkey Wrench? in US language) I wondered how exactly it would really work. I was tempted but didn't bite, but now that you showed how it works, next time they have them on special, I'll pick one up.
Great series, I've been watching everything you show since I stumbled upon your site.
It's a good tool to have. especially for round things.
The way they are designed, the more force you put on them, the harder they grip.
So they are almost guaranteed to either turn or break the thing you grab with it.

Hey look ! BMW , Mercedes , Landrover , Jaguar , Audi , VW THIS IS HOW A TIMING CHAIN IS MADE...... 1960's technology alive and well 😮 luckily we've moved onto 80,000 miles or 8 years then destruction....built in obsolescence.
Love the Unimog and it is coming out nice. If you ever need to dismantle that starter motor, there is a small locking steel ring at the gear end which can be a dog to get out and installing because it can fly out across the shop and get lost. One way is to cover the starter with a transparent plastic bag and with an expander tool nudge it in or remove it. That way it will get caught in the bag should it spring out.

Cool project. I'd like one of the Mercedes Unimogs myself. A great 4X4 tractor with some hiway credential. Mostly , they're a good slow work and towing off the road implement hauler. I think they're the modern equivalent of the Ferguson tractor (TE)system. With a wind and waterproof cab if in good repair.

really like your planning with improvisation..and you would make an excellent teacher..wonder if you plan to enlarge your garage/sheds? and do you plan on getting a lathe someday? keep up the excellent content..those 421s are cool, dare say..cute..

Surprised your valves are loose.
Usually valves recede into the seat, making them tighter.
Loose means rockers or lobes are wearing.
This engine must be older than the ones used in the /8 and w123 which have sort of half rocker arms with a normal set screw and lock nut
Yeah, it might be. This is the very early OM615. i think most of the W123 had the OM616 and the OM617
The truck almost looks too good. I’d be afraid to use it.
As a retired automotive electrical specialist (New Zealand) l respectfully suggest your maim starter cables including earth cables are way too light considering Diesel engines use larger heavy duty starter motors, that draw much more current when cranking the engine especially when cold starting. You appear to be using only cables suitable for a petrol engine. I have seen the results of cables overheating causing major vehicle electrical fires.
I did do the math first :)
The starter draws a maximum of 150 amps. so on 12 Volts DC, the 50mm2 wire i'm using, should be more than enough.
It's also a tad bigger than the wire that was previously on there. so it should be all good 👍

2) As far as I know there are special wrenches existing for adjusting Daimler Benz respectively Mercedes engine valves. Those make it much easier to do the work. The wrenches have been not really expensive in former times but I don't know about the current prices.
3) Please kindly allow me to call attention to something (and please, Sir, don't get me wrong): In this video I realised, that you are using the word "actually" disproportionately often and mostly without necessity. If you have the spare time left, you can consider to count how often. I bet that you will be surprised. 😁 ;-)

Hahah you are right. i didn't even notice that in the edit. But i do say that, quite a lot in this one.
I think there are two reasons for it. first off, i use in in place of a word, from my own language, but it dosen't translate dierectly, so it may sound a bit out of place somtimes.
And also, some of these clips, are put together from several cuts, sometimes from different days, so i don't always remember exactely what i have said, and may end up repeating myself. :)
And also, you are right, there are spacial tools for that job. I just don't do it often enough, that it would make sense for me to buy them :)

2) Yeah, sometimes all of us do things without realising them. Especially good or even bad behaviours we have trained on ourselves (please don't ask me why I know, sigh 🙈). For instance: Very, very many people all over the world use uhm, eh, ahm etc. over and over again while speaking. Regardless if old, young, rich, poor, well educated or not. All that can be trained away relatively easily of course.
3) You can weld together those special valve adjustment tools. All you need is to sacrifice 2 wrenches and a bit of time. But because you mentioned that you don't do valve adjustments very often, it might not be rational to fabricate your own special shaped wrenches.

what are the outer dimensions of the angle frame?

It's not completely square.
it's 580mm Long. The "front" end is 335mm wide. and the "Rear" end is 365mm wide.
With the ends being square to the long piece on the driver side.
And i think it was some 20x20x3mm angle steel.
