For my money, a "survivor" is a vehicle that hasn't been wrapped around a tree or allowed to rot away into dust under one. That's a survivor.

No. A survivor is a vehicle that has survived the perils of daily existence during the decades. So it hasn't been crashed to shit, rusted to shit, modified to shit, and remains generally unscathed with just average wear and tear.

We just finally found my dad's 53 chevy pickup he built 40 years ago and was forced to sell. We looked the last 30 years for it no luck until 2 weeks ago. Long story short it spent 21 years in a garage a old woman had it and another older man and woman has had it the last 9 years mostly sitting in a heated garage. Still same paint same 400 s.b.c same trans everything same but steering wheel floor shifter and a sticker on the dash. Very emotional because my dad's health us going down now we are going to pick it up soon and it will be back home so he can enjoy and me as well my brother. Picked it up at auction in 1974 from the American Embassy as a presidential car. Traced it back too 1994 when it was de-registered and scrapped. It was one of 3 used. Ahhh, if only I knew builders when I was 23. When I broke up with my GF in 1992, her mom gave me a 1972 Merc Marquis Brougham. Other than the tires being dry rotted and an engine mount, it was basically a barn find. Paint was oxidized, and a vacuum advance valve to bring it up to CA emissions, it still was awesome. 429 V8, 4 barrel Thunderjet carb, forget what the transmission was, but it also had early antilock brakes, all power package, towed a Caveman trailer from the Bay Area to Atlanta, it laughed it all off.
Made the mistake of letting a stoner roomie drive it to tow a reggae band's equipment and he wrecked it. Since 1992, been driving freebies and handmedown cars and vans since then. I miss that epic land yacht though.
First car I ever had enough room to sleep on the back seat, and also when the engine mount failed, it locked on the accelerator pedal, so on the freeway, I quickly hit 80 MPH, and 8 later, saw some serious sh*t when I tried shifting to neutral, and accidentally knocked it over to reverse. You never saw so much tire smoke in your life, and everyone got out of my way so I could get to the shoulder.

Oh yeah, one of the most annoying "features" that car had, was a steering wheel mounted horn strip, in case you doubt the veracity of that story. If you had to take a tight turn and crank the wheel, you'd wind up honking the horn, no matter HOW much care you took in the process.

Oh, last note, it was a Bay Area score, so zero rust, just dry rot tires, oxidized paint, and marginally rotted vinyl on the roof. Seriously, other than a crack in the original steering rim, and minor mechanical issues, it was pretty damned mint for a 22 year old car at the time.

I bought my 1968 Dart GTS 340 brand new from Bellevue Dodge. It was a beautiful Corvette Met. Blue with matching interior. It had white bumble bee stripes on the back. I turned a 13;9 first time out to S.I.R. raceway in stock form. My ex-wife stole the car from me in our divorce then wrecked it on some railroad tracks in Longview, Wash.

“Life got in the way.” In many cases though, it wasn’t financial reasons. I can’t tell you how many times people asked me when I was going to get rid of my car. You were essentially expected to sell whatever you had in high school and buy ether a minivan or SUV. Getting rid of the past, and becoming an adult. And once you had a kid, then people REALLY started questioning you more. You can put car seats in these. Why is that so hard to fathom for some people?
