CLIP DESCRIPTION:
To all the players surprise, Roy (Robert Redford) puts on a hitting clinic in batting practice in front of Pop (Wilford Brimley) and Red (Richard Farnsworth).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The film version of The Natural pulls off the neat trick of conveying the spirit of the Bernard Malamud novel upon which it is based, even while changing both the outcome and the meaning of Malamud's closing chapters. In his first film appearance in four years, Robert Redford plays Roy Hobbs, a farm boy with a hankering to be a great baseball player. With his faithful homemade bat "Wonderboy" in hand, Roy heads to the big city. En route, he arouses the fascination of the mysterious Harriet Bird (Barbara Hershey). Luring the boy to a hotel room, Harriet asks Roy what he wants out of life. Roy brashly responds he wants to be "the best there is," whereupon Harriet whips out a gun and shoots Roy down. Sixteen years later, a humbler Roy Hobbs emerges from the bush leagues to become a 35-year-old "rookie" on the 1939 lineup of the New York Knights. He soon becomes the team's star player, and in so doing once more attracts enigmatic woman Memo Paris (Kim Basinger), the glamorous niece of the Knights' manager Pop Fisher (Wilford Brimley) and the mistress of Rothstein-like gambler Gus Sands (a curiously unbilled Darren McGavin). Roy's fascination with Memo compromises his ability to play, but this time he finds salvation in the form the angelic Iris Gaines (Glenn Close), his childhood sweetheart. From this point forward, the script for The Natural bears very little resemblance to the Malamud original. Without giving anything away, it can be said that Roy Hobbs is given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compensate for the mistakes of his youth, despite the demonic intrusion of inexplicably spiteful sports writer Max Mercy (Robert Duvall). The Natural elevates the art of slow-motion photography to new heights; while this technique would become precious and boring in later baseball films, it works beautifully here, as does the decision by director Barry Levinson and cinematographer Caleb Deschanel to convey the symbolism inherent in the story in purely visual rather than blatantly verbal terms. (If the characters told you that the story was a retelling of the Camelot legend in baseball terms, would you have watched?) Another plus is the pastoral theme music by Randy Newman, which has been well utilized on sports broadcasts and "human interest" TV documentaries ever since. The baseball scenes in The Natural were staged at War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo, New York.

I love how he's so in shock by the hitting he doesn't even notice the mud he's drinking
That's the first thing I noticed
Me too
The most underrated part of this scene is the echo of the bat on the ball and the ball slamming into the bleacher seats. No fans screaming, just players/coaches standing there in dead silence, watching it.
One of the best sports movies of all time. The cast is stellar from top to bottom. The music is incredible. The ending is perfect. I watch it several times a year. Never gets old.
Same here. :))
Me three :) one of my favs for sure
I watch it every time it comes on TV, and i dont even like baseball so that will tell you something LOL!
Randy Newman's score
I love how they have that nasty brown water coming out of the fountain...it's the original Brawndo.
Lol nice reference 😂
It's what plants crave, It’s got them Electrolytes!
New York sewage at its best
Lol, Brawndo...love it!! I think it's just another element of this scene to show how everyone present was shell shocked, so to speak at Roy's hitting display. In an earlier scene Pop was complaining about how he couldn't even get a decent drink of water at the ballpark while they sent him an overaged rookie to deal with!! At this point, he was so amazed that dirty water didn't even phase him!!
Quite simply, one of the very, very "BEST" movies, ever.
Period.
Without a doubt
Twister051 I understand the book ends the opposite way round to the film.
Ahhh, the crack of a wood bat meeting a baseball. My favourite sound. Love this scene. The echoes, the balls clanging off the empty seats. The look of disbelief on the faces of the coaches, the pitcher, the other players, the bat boy. Always been something magical about baseball and this movie for me. Baseball at a time when it was in a purer state than it is today. (the gambling angle aside)
Yep..baseball is still a grand game..and this movie exemplifies that..

great, great scene when you first see this movie.
jason: The only sound better is a cricket ball coming off a Cricket Bat
Awwww....how can you not be romantic about baseball?
Back in the day channel surfing, always stopped to watch this movie no matter how far into it.
@MANCHESTER UNITED soccer is popular because it only requires a ball to play. Many poor countries, kids play soccer cause that's all they have. It requires very little space for children. Doesn't require a large muscular body.Doesnt require height. It's about dexterity and endurance
In America growing up just about every elementary school has soccer. 👍
@@zzygyy hes not even from england mate cos no self respecting english Manchester United fan would say soccer he would say football, love me some baseball tho theres some proper magic to it, I mean yeah football u still have to have skill but it takes skill luck and some confidence to hit that ball out of the stadium right? Used to play it myself , football too
@@BipoIarbear 👍 Baseball it's about the pitch and the action starts. The perfect sport to hold a business conversation while watching.
@@zzygyy It's spam. I've seen that comment in just about every baseball video on this site.
@MANCHESTER UNITED F.C Baseball is America's game, We like it here, call it a cultural thing. That being said, i love me a proper Brazilian Counterattack with Ronaldo making a defense look silly and punching one in the back of the net.
"Try this one Grandpa"..Craaack!! Lol! Perfect!
The incomparable Richard Farnsworth. He was wonderful in whatever he did. I really do miss him.
Comes A Horseman, The Grey Fox, The Straight Story are the ones that stick with me. I had no idea he took his own life, but I won't judge his choice.

". I had no idea he took his own life, but I won't judge his choice."
He finished his last movie and had painful terminal cancer. He was never getting better and the pain would just get worse. And there was no opportunity for a shootout in a bar.
Ethelred Hardrede
@@charlieross-BRM I would add Tom Horn with the great Steve McQueen to the list. Also, he was dying of cancer and in great pain.
Kind of a peek at how he lived his life is to watch " Comes A Horseman". He is an older Cowby working for his friend's daughter after his death. He gets hurt bad on a roundup leaves the ranch the next day to not be a burden to anybody and dies in his sleep. James Caan and Jane Fonda find him in his bed roll holding his lariat with his Winchester lying beside him. He was a REAL COWBOY born and raised . John Wayne said it best in The Shootist .." I don't interfere or belittle anybody , I won't lay hands on anyone or tell you how to live or what to do. By the same token I require they do the same for me."
@@charlieross-BRM Oh God, I didn't know that. Such a sweet soul.
My father wanted me to be a baseball player.
“Well you’re better than anyone I ever had, and your the best damn hitter I ever saw……..suit up.
If that scene doesn’t send chills down your spine, you are not a baseball fan.
Amazing.
I am not a baseball fan, and it still did. I wish the two of them were in more movies together, their styles seemed to mesh with the characters they played.
Amazingly, Pop Fisher was only two years older than Hobbs in real life…
My favorite film couple: Richard Farnsworth and Wilford Brimley.
That wink at the kid is great!
In HBO's Rome, Marc Antony winks at a boy fishing in the Rubicon as he and Caesar make their crossing.
You never forget the feel of a basball uniform or the sound the ball makes hitting your glove. This movie brings all that back.
The kid smiling at 0:56 always makes me laugh. A great performance from him
Totally agree! On some level, I believe the kid sees a piece of himself in Roy; an outcast, over-looked and disregarded.
Never liked the kid growing up for some reason. 😂😂😂😂
i love baseball with a passion, this movie is one of the classics, that i am going to cherish for the rest of my life, thanks for uploading Movieclips :)
This film was just poetry to watch. I'm not even a fan of any kind when it comes to contemporary team sports but this has style and great pacing. The story really has little to do with baseball anyway when you think in broader strokes.
Oh, OK. I cried at Brian's Song. You happy now?
True. This is really a love story on a several layers.
Authorian legends.
Same here i love a sports movie !
One of the best scenes in the movie
One of the greatest sports movies EVER!
I love how he calls him Hobbs, until he sees him swing, then it's Roy.
Love the sound design in this film
Greatest baseball movie of all time
Field of Dreams....it's a draw for me.
@@tendrams love both, sandlot as well
Trouble with the curve was also a good film also a league of their own. P.S. i wouldnt like to be the pitcher in this scene he got totally mashed .
One of my favorite baseball movies
No one could have played the manager but Wilford Brimley
RIP Wilford Brimley: Tender Mercies, Cocoon, Absence of Malice, The Firm and The Natural - what a legacy!
and Diabeetus
@@r3tr0actiongamer24 and 'the thing'
He was also great in The China Syndrome.
Don't forget the Postmaster General on Seinfeld! Do you like the mail Kramer?
Quaker Oatmeal Commercials, too! 🥣
When I faked sick as a kid, would watch this vhs all day. Absolutely my favorite movie. Read books by Malamud in turn. What an incredible film
This is why the Great American Pastime is still the greatest sport. Everybody likes and admires the talent it takes to hit a round ball coming at you with a round bat with power. We see it on TV and at the park all the time but it's still an amazing talent.
Wilford Brimley RIP you were a good man.
Young Bobby Savoy is a great character in the movie
He is very underrated
He was so instrumental to Hobbs
1)He was a kid getting a thrill at watching Roy, and since Roy was still a kid at heart this worked really well.
2)He asked Roy how to make a bat, which turned out to be the biggest hit of his Life.
3)He joked around in the dugout with all the guys making the players and the manager laugh. He kept it fun during the winning streaks.
4)He gave Roy that extra power he needed at the end. When they’re both holding the bat together and the flash goes off, and You see Roy smile..You just knew it was magic being passed along. It was the second part of Roy’s Life about to begin..”the life we learn with, and the life we live with after that”..he learned with wonderboy..he lives with the savoy special.
Your mind is going (TF’s with this dude, all I did was make a comment that the bat boy was a good character) but I freakin love this movie Lol.
Sorry for rambling
bLaCjAcK Daniels No need to apologize for decent input! Thank you!
Better late than never indeed! What a great movie.
This practice, Iverson. We're talkin' about practice.
not a game...practice
There goes Roy Hobbs, the best there ever was in the game.
That was based on a real quote from Ted Williams. The character Roy Hobbs is actually based on two real life baseball players.
@@MrChuckwagon55I thought he was partly based on Mickey Mantle.
@@SheepofChrist818 - No it wasn’t based on Mantle at all. Roy Hobbs was based on the player Eddie Waitkus, and in the movie to a lesser extent the great player Ted Williams. The novel was written in 1952 before Mickey Mantle became a star.
A great movie about when the game was played for love of the game
It’s sad that all sports are now political
For the Love of the Game was a different baseball movie 🤣😂
Such a great film! I'm not sure baseball is the best example for love of the game though. As soon as teams formed, people were making money on it.
@@shuatreee yeah, people usually have bad habits like eating three times and having a bath once a week
@@pjthehomelessmage It was always political. You think only allowing white people to play wasn't political? lol.
I want a New York Knights hat and jersey! I saw this movie twice in the theatre when it came out in 1984. And it was definitely worth it. My favourite scene is when Hobbs breaks out of a slump with a homer that breaks a clock at Wrigley Field against the Cubs.
Scoreboard at Wrigley Field never even looked like it did in the movie
That WOULD be good! I wonder how often people would ask about that?
the smell of the grass the sound of the bat hitting the ball the fans the game what's not to luv🇺🇸
Wilford Birmley reminded so much of William Conrad. Their mannerisms were so alike. I really thought they were brothers!!
I know both of them are gone but both of those men had such a profound effect on my life.
Gone but never forgotten!!!
Hard to believe Redford is only two years younger than Wilford Brimley.
Robert is the 7th oldest. Richard Farnsworth was the oldest (1920). Richard, Darren, Robert P, Robert D, Wilford, Joe Don, Robert R. The girls 1940's. The players 1950's.
@@vancemccarthy2554 I will watch anything with Richard Farnsworth in it. The guy just is so damn smooth and relaxing to watch, even in parts where he gets angry. Truly a case of better late than never. I am sure he went from stunt man to actor at a late age.
He always looks like JERIMIAH jOHNSON.
@@charlieross-BRM he killed himself
Love the battle at the start between Hobbs and the stubborn, cynical old "Pop" to even get onto the field. A great movie!
Beautiful swing!
Please remaster all these movies from the 80s and 90s!!!!
Thanks so much
Love everything about this movie.
Greatest sound ever God I miss playing
Roy Hobbs and his bat Wonder Boy were killing it out there at BP (Batting Practice) even though it's just a movie.
Legendary Wonder Boy.
One of my favorite baseball movies......right up there with "Pride of the Yankees".
Field of Dreams.
The sound engineer deserves an Oscar for those bat cracks!
Isn't that why it's called The Natural?
Richard Farnsworth a great character actor. Rip
Did anyone else notice that the water from the fountain was brown?
An he still drank it 👌

Every time.
That water had diabeetus.
Brawndo the thirst mutilator

I love that sound…. Always
their so rich they got chocolate milk coming out of the drinking fountain :P
Such a great feel good movie.
Few modern sports movies can match this beautiful star studded classic movie...
Such a movie masterpiece
"I don't figure this. Red, check his blood for steroids and EPO. If it comes up to spec we'll let you use it."
“I even had to cancel a round of golf with the Secretary of State. Do you like golf, Mr. Kramer?”
The greatest baseball movie ever made.
Try this one, grandpa.
*Pitch takes 3 seconds to reach home plate.*
Excellent film!
"Not bad kid" hahahahahahahahaha...Poor Bump, looks like someone stole his dog!
That water out of that fountain is brown. Lmao I died at that scene.
They had a scene earlier in the movie with Pop taking a drink and spitting it out and yelling "Wouldn't you think I could get a fresh drink of water?" The brown water, losing team, empty stands is all a part of the picture of a failing franchise that Roy Hobbs resurrects.
Yeah, I played that back a few times. It looks like chewing tobacco spit. Considering the situation, and Wilford Brimley, that would be kind of fitting.
@@charlieross-BRM I think I rather drink the chaw juice they spit into that thing then whatever sludge is coming out of it.
If there was only cell phones back in 1988 💔wish I can do it all again
Will never forget 😞
Very good movie really enjoy it and I’ve watched it many times.!!!!!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Best sports movie...ever!
It wasn't the bat, it was HIM!
BEST BASEBALL MOVIE EVER
Wilford Brimley AND Richard Farnsworth!!!!

"Better late than never" that's my new motto!
Good old fashioned Quaker Oats. It can save your life. Lol
Love how he shouts "Hobbs" and then "Roy". Even if that was scripted, it's brilliant acting. RIP Wilford Brimley.

I've never seen this movie, but I've heard that it's really good.
Most satisfying sounds in sports..
Now that's how u breakout batting practice💯
This guy hitting Jacks like I do on the game The Show with my custom league player haha
“Try this one Grandpa”. *proceeds to hit the furthest ball yet
Once in every century a hero appears. Problem is that's it's tough being the hero for long.
However Robert Redford the person and the actor has stayed the race a long while and appears to be a true "natural "
I like how when he first came into the tunnel as the new right fielder they said, you don't start playing at your age, you retire" and thought hewas a member of the Salvation Army Band and then when he smacks all the home runs in practice the assistant coach says, "not bad kid. "
Great practice, Ha
"Hey coach if you don't like me and my bat I hear the Cubs are looking for hitters. You take care now."
It's the right thing to do...and the tasty way to do it.
" Better late than Never "
Exactly. Thats the point of the whole movie. And to pursuit your dreams in spite of sidetracks.
A perfect film.
Love this movie❤
Love it when Pops is so dumbfounded that he drinks that nasty brown water without any care in the world whatsoever. 😂
Great movie.
0:42 That was the guy doing cocaine in Crocodile Dundee at that party in NYC. LMAO
0:29 Try this one granpa ...

Redford has a nice swing...
He studied the swing of Ted Williams (arguably the greatest pure hitter of his day) and worked hard to emulate it.
thanks! didn't know that!
@@frankdodd3355 maybe ted Williams in slow motion
A great bat, as was the Savoy Special...
my favourite movie.
A family favorite; two uncles sat in the stands as extras during the final game. One of my uncles helped make the scoreboard. As a side note; how dirty is the water coming out of the dugout drinking fountain! O.O
Damn great movie 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️
But what was the exit velo and launch angle
Robert Redford had a real swing.
Tom cruise now, is older than wilford brimley was in this film
