Give Me an Answer - Why Should We Trust the Gospels to Tell Us the Truth About Jesus?

  • Program 2821 ................... - The Gospels - Forgiveness - Trust Jesus
The "Give Me An Answer" ministry began as an outgrowth of the dialogues Cliffe Knechtle has had with students on various university campuses throughout the United States. These universities include the University of Maine, Harvard, MIT, University of Florida, University of Texas, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Diego, Berkeley, Stanford, University of Hawaii and the University of Washington. Cliffe spoke on these campuses in front of the Student Union or Library at noon for five to ten minutes. At the close of his initial remarks, he'd open up the time for questions and answers, which usually turned into a two to four hour dialogue with students. His crowd size ranged from 25 - 500 students at a time, and between classes, new students would join the discussion. This is an extremely effective way to reach a large number of university students with the Gospel of Christ.

Inquisitive minds asking real questions about the meaning of life. I argue everyone in this audience will be better off for attending this. I was much like the students debating Cliffe when I was in college. Jesus finally affected my life as an adult and saved my soul. I think a lot of these attendees (especially the debaters) will be saved in time and they will owe some of that to Cliffe’s work.

No evidence what you experienced is anything but your brain under some sort of duress.
The fact that your single experience can change you from being an "atheist" to a theists confirms you lack the critical thinking skills which any true atheist would apply before changing their view. You are accepting your one experience as definitive evidence of a god instead of asking questions and looking at all the natural possibilities for it that would be more likely.

When I was broken on the highway shores of Texas in the wake of my brother’s suicide, no breathing exercise or massage stopped my sobbing. But the instant I prayed to Jesus for peace and comfort, a warm honey sensation washed over my body and I felt *peace.*
The three men who cleaned up Jimmy’s suicide shared a nightmare the night after. Each woke up in bed to find a “shadow cowboy” standing over them or sitting on a nearby chair. One saw it with his dog. One saw it with his new girlfriend. Each approached me separately to say they saw Jimmy’s ghost, and they were shocked when I brought to them together to reveal to each other that they shared the experience.
It was not Jimmy’s ghost. It was the demon he’d seen since he was 4 years old, before he could even play-pretend. Familiar spirits chased him and our cousin into grandma’s house in broad daylight, screaming and crying.
Jimmy hadn’t seen that thing for years when he shot himself. But it tried to pass itself off as him. My sister later saw it on dad’s porch, with dad visible through the kitchen window.
I’ve had personal encounters with such things. Since I turned to Jesus, those encounters stopped. Guard your hearts and minds.

Jesus Chrst, etc.) He certainly is a man who has done his research which we all respect! In my opinion however, he was not listening to your words to understand, but rather to defend. In the Jewish religion, we recite the Kaddish, the prayer for the deceased for a total of 11 months. It is our belief that it takes up to 11 months (but not more) to go through your life review and burn off the impurities so your purified soul can enter Heaven. We believe that applies to all of humanity no matter how evil ( even Hitler). We believe we are all born saved from the spirit of God given to Adam through his nostrils. We all come from Adam and the spirit of the Creator is within us all. When Adam ate from the tree of knowledge, he became separated from his spirit of God and was now aligned to his human ego.

At the time I kmow I was having a discussion with Cliffe. However as soon as I let Jesus into my heart, I saw a change in my life" Cliffe truly is out there as a soldier of Christ.

And it is very good of you and for you. Keep on drinking in the word and those who defend the word. The enemy is very busy. Let me give you a quick example. People say there are more “nones” in a recent poll and maybe within 100 years or less this foolishness will be gone entirely. I say that Voltaire claimed that within 100 years of his death the Bible would be a relic of antiquity. It is still the most purchased book in the world and 10% of China now identifies as Christian. Africa may have more presbyterians than America and we are seeing signs of revival thanks to the Passion Conferences started by Louie Giglio and the collaborative efforts of young worship leaders under the aegis of Maverick City Music. We know the truth from our hearts . I've often said I know the scripture from cover to cover , long before I read it all . Simply because I haven't found any discrepancies in my heart's belief . Raised in a very abusive family , the youngest of 5 brother's I love very much . I doubted nearly everything I've heard in chuch as I tried to relate it to Christian behavior . What was preached was far different than what they practice . If I stole from my brother , I was smothered in guilt . Repenting , by telling Christ I was sorry and changing my ways was not enough without confessing to my brother , I stole the item . Shame became my best influencer to changing my way . If one continues to rely on God for lasting change and ignore the damage done by our mistakes , that person is " like myself " more apt to make the same mistake again threw complacency . Everybody that knows the mistakes you made in the past are a testiment to the power of God in your life and a reminder of things never to do again . What about the scripture brother's you ? What doubts do you have . It's OKAY To question God . But beware " Ask an ye shall receive " . My doubts and the desire to know has lead me down a road of suffering . I suffer today because I want to be prepared for judgement day . I suffer so others don't have to . I've stopped rape's , gang beatings , possible murder , adults from manipulating our youth to become drug addicts , robbery . I've even captured two escaped convict's from west Germany in the church parking lot lol , and much much more . God is amazing and he has always bean their to protect me . I still have a bone to pick with Christ when I see him . He says to give your life for a friend is to show no greater love . I certainly understand this passage , but after I realized the impact of loving thy enemy has had on my views of the enemy , I Also realized it's relevance to one creator and one family . Your enemy is your brother and sister , pray they overcome their ignorances and denials. We are all family . I believe without God my life would have no value . Therefore giving it up for a friend is easy . Suffering to help others seems to be harder but rewarding . This lesson I now seek may be my final doubt in scripture . But most rewarding . How will he teach me why my life is of greater value than I feel it is ? PS. Ask yourself what is the logic behind repentance that excludes your victim when we know intent can be defined in scripture as , actions committed by the heart and or eye's. Why isn't suicide explained in scripture to be murder . Is the judgment on suicide based on intent ? You see , our own intent can hide behind our true desires , leaving us foolishly comfortable with our faith . It has truly been a blessing to be poor and an honor to suffer for my brother's . Luv and prayer's y'all .

"Hell" isn't a place. It is a condition meaning, in trouble, in agony, in misery. It is a Greek word. "Psyche" is also a Greek word that means "the mind". If a person is "psycho" it means "without the mind". When people answer a phone call or greet someone, they most often say "Hello" as a warm and friendly greeting meaning "no trouble or problems".
'Hel' is from Norse mythology. She is the daughter of Loki and ruler of the underworld. This is where the meaning became about a place known as "The realm of Hel"

By default we all start out agnostic for the mere fact we simply don’t know either way. Then our experiences and upbringing shape what we believe. Whether we are an extreme religious believer or an extreme non religious believer, at the end of the day they are both based on faith since we simply do not know. This is where the true agnostic will continue with this journey of the struggle. Taking it a step further, it all very well could be the biggest placebo ever and its all just our own psychology saving ourselves from the reality that this may be all that there is.

Critical thought and healthy interchange are being usurped by opinionators, commentators, politicians, advertisers, religion, charlatans and so many others. All too often others want us to believe something that provides them with some advantage - and we’re often too busy to explore the truth of their words and intent and all too often accept what they say as truth. It rarely is. We’re losing what makes us special and what makes faith valuable.

The Biblical version of this story is that inside you, there is a lion and a lamb. Normally, the lion would eat the lamb. The lamb stands no chance. That's our sinful nature. Without help from God, our sinful nature will overcome us. When we accept the offer of salvation by putting our trust in Jesus, the lamb overcomes the lion. When we die in Christ, the lion is put to death. We are free from the temptations of sin. We will have, not a sinful nature in Heaven, but a perfect one. Can we still sin in Heaven? Yes, but we won't want to. We will have no desire to anymore than you have the desire to drink the juice at the bottom of a dumpster right now. Great video, great channel! Just subscribed, ty! I would like point out that the Bible is not vague about hell, and it is very simple. As he stated in the video: "God made hell to DESTROY evil and not give it a future." Real simple concept actually. Rev 19 to 21 explains the context of how it happens. New Jerusalem comes down, judgement takes place, God creates a lake of fire and brimstone (same way that happened with Sodom and Gomorrah, Jude chap. 7. God even showed how it's gonna be. The fire is called eternal, because the result is eternal. It may have taken days, but obviously theses cities are not burning still to this day) where Satan, his angels, and those who rejected grace are thrown to perish. John 3:16-20 echos the theme of the entire Bible: by grace some are GIVEN eternal life, others PERISH (not live eternally being tortured for a few years of sin. You can preach this and that God is love and just at the same time. It's insane)
The confusion on this subject among Christians today is because the paganism (he mention Plato ideas) influence that had hell as an eternal place of suffering that permeated all cultures. No doubt Satan's plan to confuse and blemish God's character.
If you leave the culture ideais out and just focus on what the Bible is saying, then the subject of hell you will find very clear. Malachi 4:3 even says they will be like ashes under our feet on that day of judgment that is coming. God bless!

First point: The authors of the Gospels don't even claim to be eyewitnesses. They were written anonymously. That's a huge barrier to the eyewitness claim right off the bat.
Second: The gospels were written about 35+ years after Jesus death. Mark was written, at the earliest, in 67 AD. That's not an unreasonable amount of time for an eyewitness to live. Matthew was likely in the 70's, again not an unreasonable. Luke and John were 80+, so we're running into lifespan considerations. 80+ is the point where most eyewitnesses would be dead. Being conservative, Mark and Matthew have a decent shot for eyewitness testimony soley based in age, but Luke and particularly John likely wouldn't have been.
Third: It is unlikely the disciples would have been literate, especially in Greek. Jesus operated in a backwater province of Galilee and his disciples were mostly peasants/fishermen. It is unlikely they knew how to write at all. Matthew, by tradition, is a tax collector, so its possible he could have been literate. However, the likelihood of these individuals knowing Koigne Greek is even smaller. Greek wasn't exactly a common language to learn to write in the area, particularly for Jews, that would have been Aramaic.
Fourth: Narrative clues and disagreements. One really big knock against Mark is that he has a remarkably poor understanding of the geology of the region for someone who supposedly lived there and traveled with Jesus. He incorrectly identifies roads and makes mistakes regarding the placement of cities and lakes.
We also have instances in the gospels were events occur where there realistically couldn't have been witnesses. For instance, Jesus in the Garden. He was supposedly alone, yet we get narration as if one of the disciples was right there next to him. Same for Jesus being tempted in the desert by Satan.
There's also disagreements between the gospels. The birth narratives in Matthew and Luke cannot be harmonized, they flat contradict one another. That means at least one of Matther and Luke are mistaken, which suggests one of them wasn't an eyewitnesses or spoke to eyewitnesses. Would Jesus tell his disciples two different birth stories? Why else is there disagreement here?
The same thing happens regarding Judas. If the authors WERE eyewitnesses, they would have known Judas personally. This is again an event that differs pretty wildly between Matthew and Luke. We can fairly safely come to the conclusion that at least one of these gospels was not in fact written by an eyewitness, or that if it was, that eyewitness was either unreliable or a liar.
Fifth: We actually do have one source who spoke first hand to eyewitnesses: Paul. He actually downplays his meetings with members of the 12 because it ended in disagreement, and Paul envisioned a less Jewish future for Christianity than did James and Peter. He doesn't speak much else about the 12 nor relay their accounts of Jesus. Paul also seems to be rather unaware of the existence of Gospels. That would seem odd if the disciples had written accounts of Jesus.
Six: The authors of the Gospels were jockeying for positions of authority. Mark was the first, which is why Luke and Matthew are very careful not to directly contradict Mark, and in fact copy Mark word-for -word in many places. Something like 70% of Matthew and Luke was taken from Mark. This means that authority and legitimacy MATTERED to the Authors of the Gospel. If they were actually members of the 12, they would have had unquestionable Bona Fides. Leaving out that they were members of the 12 would make no sense at all.
When you put all this together, it is very unlikely that any of the gospels, let alone 2 or 3 of them, were written by Eyewitnesses.
There are some parts of the Bible that seem seriously weird to me. Take the end of Matthew 27 for example, with its image of the undead zonbies wandering around Jerusalem. It’s one of those passages that I’ve never heard anyone preach on, possibly because it seems to raise more questions than it answers i just think if this happened it would of made history And yet, as always, when we take the time to dig a bit deeper some things start to come in focus."And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!” Matthew 27 v 50.54

A straightforward reading of the Book of Acts reveals the apostles saw themselves as eyewitnesses. The early Church recognized this and formed the Canon around the historic, apostolic record related to Jesus. While features of the Gospels may still be challenged by those who deny the eyewitness nature of the texts, the best inference from the evidence is the Gospels were intended to be eyewitness accounts.

      2) The disciples were likely to be literate. Put aside that some had Greek names, there was a lot of intention to educate in their culture. Many boys learned to read and recite their holy books, at a very young age. I'm sure many of the disciples did, as the "my yoke is easy and my burden is light" would have meant something to them

Doubt is not a bad thing, doubting believing in something that has no substantial evidence is normal, and good for a mind to ask questions and to learn, rather than shut them out.
Instead of trying to rid yourself of doubt, go out and learn and ask, and research yourself. Many of us who are atheists now started that on that load of doubt, and we educated ourselves, we went out and we seeked answers to things outside of just a church and the bible, and found that we have no good reason to believe in the things that we do, because faith is nothing more than just hoping that something is true, Faith doesn't give you an answer, faith, believing in something only stops you from asking the questions.
I would say instead of forcing doubt out of your mind, go with it and learn research study, put answers to questions that you may have even if you don't like these thoughts as being someone in religion, but find answers anyway, it may help strengthen your faith, it may wake you up and realize like it did all of us that it's nonsense, but that is your road to discover.
