  • Hawkesbury Junction, about 5 miles (8 km) from the Coventry Basin is where the Oxford and Coventry canals meet. This location is the northernmost part of the Oxford Canal and is also known as ‘Sutton Stop’ after the family that provided several lock keepers here in the 19th century.
At the side of the Coventry Canal is a brick-built pump house dating back to 1821, which was used for raising water from an underground stream into the canal. This fell into disuse in 1913. The first engine installed here when the building was new, was already 100 years old. Find out what happened to it …

Been watching your excellent videos for a bit now, and find them very interesting. I believe the Oxford Canal was supposed to be on the same level as the Coventry, but the surveyors prob messed up. It ended up about 4 inches higher than the Coventry. Also, I'm led to believe that the pumphouse used to pump water from the local mines, so it served a double purpose, in topping the Coventry canal up. Looking forward to more of your videos.

Thanks Graham, welcome aboard, that’s very kind of you to say so. The lock is said to be a stop lock, which forced boaters to stop and pay their tolls to the different canal companies, hence the difference in level. Who can say for certain what actually happened all those years ago. Cheers

Hello Alan, a very nice video. As a point of interest we live in the Hawkesbury District here in NSW.

This was an interesting diversion from the usual boat-tubers vlogs in that you concentrated the whole video on one subject rather than simply cruising from A to B - nice, I like it

My Narrowboat Venture didn’t say I don’t like the cruise type vlogs, simply that this was a welcome and refreshing change

I do understand Martin just wanted you to know the next vlogs would be cruising ones. I appreciate your support and encouragement.

Yes, you're right, it was just a stop lock to take tolls, but I'm sure it was a surveying error. Still, as you said, who really knows.

Also, the two canals wen't joined when they were first built. The good had to be carted over a narrow isthmus of land separating the two canals
