HIGHLIGHTS: Celtic Women 3-2 Glasgow City (AET) | Ghirls claim first Scottish Cup in Extra-time!

- History was made in the most dramatic and hard-earned fashion at Tynecastle as Celtic FC Women clinched their first ever Scottish Cup and first ever cup double, with Izzy Atkinson grabbing a dramatic extra-time winner for the 10-player Celts against Glasgow City.
An astonishing Celtic performance was made all the more impressive given the fact they were reduced to 10 within the first 40 minutes, but Fran Alonso’s side held Scottish Women’s Football strongholds Glasgow City to extra-time, and with penalties looming, Atkinson’s sweeping strike made it 3-2 ensuring the cup was heading to the green side of Glasgow.
With 18 minutes gone, Celtic took a deserved lead through Shen Mengyu. Brilliant work from Clarissa Larisey kept the ball in play before Jacynta dinked the ball in for Shen to drift in and finish from the acute angle.
But Celtic’s lead didn’t last long with Jenna Clark turning in Hayley Lauder’s free kick on the 24th minute to level the match.
Despite the referee playing an advantage, in the 36th minute the referee pulled it back for a spot kick for the foul on Larisey, and Charlie Wellings stepped up to convert and incredibly seal her 40th goal in her debut season in the Hoops.
he final continued to twist and turn as three minutes later the ref awarded another penalty at the other end of the park and showed Jodie Bartle red for the tangle of legs with Priscilla Chinchilla in the box. Lauren Davidson knocked it by Rachael Johnstone to equalise and again shift Alonso’s plans.
Despite being a player down Celtic were the team on top for the second half, creating wave and wave of attack but not managing to find the net as they began to find themselves pushing through rising levels of tiredness from playing against the extra player.
But despite the numerical disadvantage, Celtic held on and gave themselves another half-an-hour to find a way.
With 103 minutes on the clock, Shen looked to have grabbed her second and a winner as her strike through a packed box found the back of the net, but in another dramatic twist the referee called it off due to a Glasgow City player landing awkwardly in the box.
But in the second period of extra time, substitute Atkinson etched her and the squad’s names in the history books with a deft left-footed strike sliding through Lee Alexander’s legs and securing the club’s first ever cup double.

Terrific match but the referee ruined the spectacle. Disrespectful of the SFA to send an inexperienced ref to the showpiece fixture of the women’s game. He was totally out of his depth.
