- Me and Mark hanging out backstage at an Alter Bridge show around 2008 at The Woodlands Pavilion I think it was Buzz Fest maybe. Can't think of a better way to spend my day than hanging out with my brutha playing some guitar.
Rusty is definitely one of the best guitar players around. When you are teaching Mark Tremonti a few things you know you have talent.

Acrobatic ability vs. music with soul, feeling is something on a different level. Im not into the olympics of fast fingers. This style of playing will never appeal to the general public. Only those who like obscure scales played in a way wih a minor7th/14th/ 12th or what ever the music nerds can come up with makes sense to yhem so they can do back filps over someone "doing it faster". You can continue to demonstrate your abilities but its al noise to the rest uf us.

Watching Rusty here, I don't think anyone I have ever seen before or after has this man's level of technique. So fast but super fluid and liquid smooth, just literally out of this world. He also happens to be an awesome human being, had a lesson with him a few years back and they say never meet your heroes? Well, I'm certainly glad I met you sir, God bless you Rusty, I'm forever blowing people's minds when I introduce them to your work!

Rusty was my main influence as a kid. I saw him play and thought. “That’s not real” haha
Rusty is an extremely talented instructor and he has an abundant wealth of knowledge of the guitar as well as his technic and style. I always enjoyed watching, listening and learning as he played. He turned me on to soooo many guitarists and way back in 1997 he made me some copies of certain guitarists and told me to feed my mind. So I did. He wanted me to be well rounded in his type of Progressive ultra power metal style. We had the time of our lives jamming to it. Trying to play the drums to that stuff and write to it was challenging yet super rewarding. I could not be happier top have been a part of all of it. Love ya Russ!
I had to slow it down to get it all, but the little diminished sweep at 2:56 is a great exercise for someone like me with very limited sweep experience. Rusty is such a precise technician that slowing down the video to see the picking pattern really helped me. Now I'm going to play it about 100 times.

Rusty Cooley is awesome and I’ve been a fan for like14 years almost. Watching him shred makes me laugh though cause I can’t process it, like his sweep picking and alternate picking is genuinely insane and beautiful. Like wtf lol
ALTERNATE PICKING MASTER, I love Rusty and have followed him since early 2000’s shredding 7strings, many people pigeon hole him as a tasteless shredder. I believe it’s like comparing apples and oranges, and I believe all fruit is good😊. Many people have opinions on what is musical, I think Mozart, Chopin, Liszt, and Bach would understand his approach and respect his musicality. I bet you they would love him. I love his song writing, and his unique blistering approach to guitar and music, if you haven’t listened to his records I urge you too . He is not Joe Bonamassa or BB or Gilmour he is RUSTY FUCKING COOLEY, and he does different things with the guitar, AMAZING THINGS.
Would love to hear these two play/record something together!

rusty ..for fucks sake already..i cant even imagine what kind of friction you got going on when playing like that..i am surprised mark wasn't standing there with a fire extinguisher.just in case he had to put your ass out....crazy shred going down...but can you play awesome melodies and finger pick like mark does..thats what i love about the guitar world..so many styles and flavors and how the true greats have there distinguished flavors and styles..mark is all about the melody and the mood of the song and then connects things with his awesome riffs he comes up..his clean tones and style are amazing..where you on the other hand are a tactician of a whole different sorts..your ferocity and shear speed and technique and ability to tie complex rhythms and passages with blazing arpeggios and amazing runs....much respect from a fellow shredder

Live seeing these guys play. It's funny how so many guys think you need a flat radius fretboard or shred guitar to play like this. These guys prove it's not about the radius, neck, etc. It's about comfort and what works for you. Mark is a great player, playing on a standard 10" radius board. Good stuff.

There's no question that Rusty is celestially fast.
But, personally, I don't think that Mark can ever be Rusty, nor can Rusty ever be Mark.
Both have different styles of music, and both are equally awesome in their own respective styles!!
If they were to do something together, I would prefer to see Mark doing his style of solos rather than trying to mimic Rusty's sweeps.

You know usually you hear peeps shred at guitar centers and sometimes even at guitar contests...lots of shred can sound boring after awhile if u have no destination...like a fast fancy car with no where to go... Here rusty takes the fancy car and he knows where to go...he takes ya places where u never been....in a nut shell when u hear the guy play u just want to see what he plays next.... P. S. I would love to shred with him ...i know it be more of a slaughter than shred off bcus well hes better but I'd love to learn and be pushed to uncharted areas 🤘💀🤘

Man, Mark is fucking incredible on guitar but, I cannot recall a time when he employed his vibrato on a record. CREED, AB, Tremonti...His vibrato was really great on his instructional DVD. That's the first time I ever heard it.
And he ALWAYS plays that same fucking legato run in the same key at the same tempo and it's always descending.
One of the all-time greats but, I swear he's getting stale.
Only Angus Young can play the same thing over and over and over and over and over again and make it work. And then play it again.
