I do know that my first reaction to using sugar syrup for non food applications was the same as yours! I'd be Truly fascinated to know how many people attracted roaches, ants, mice and rats who followed this suggestion. It's truly hilarious! Maybe adding a drop off offensive essential oil like eucalyptus? I don't know, what I do know is that eventually the water will dehydrate to the point of the sugar returning to crystals and the project will eventually fall apart... Because it's sugar and not glue. Not prepackaged powdered sugar because it contains corn starch to keep it from clumping. It will not be clear. You can get any kind of pure white sugar and grind it to a flour using a coffee grinder, blender or food processor to make your own for other projects if you need it and don't have it, but in this case you'd just boil the sugar. And then hope that your art projects don't attract bugs, mice, rats or other pets that eat sweet things!! Seriously, this is a problem.
