I have a 2019 Levo and like you said it needed a Zeb and Float X2 to bring it to life. However at 51 lbs and with the bigger 700Wh battery getting it to "pop" required effort. Recently I got a Heckler SL and this bike is a game changer. It lives up to the marketing hype and pops and jumps just like a pedal bike. Without a doubt the more "playful" nature is due to having less weight and having it more centralized. Also, the 60Nm Fazua motor punches above its weight and powerful enough for my needs. The way I see it is if you tend be a rider that just plows through stuff a full power bike is probably the better choice but for those who like to "play" the new generation of "lite" emtbs with the 60Nm motors hits the sweet spot! And an emtb that doesn't look like an emtb, that's icing on the cake.

I picked up a Fuel EXe this year which "only" has 300 watts of power and weighs about 40 pounds. It's the closest ebike I've ridden to a regular mountain bike but it has just enough power to take out the sting of the climbs, and in boost it's still decently quick for an after work lap. 360wh gets me about 4000 vert on eco and I've yet to kill it on boost (done 2300 on a solo ride and had 30% left).

In my region (Tremblant QC) there's a lot of groomed trails but the unmarked ones where you have to hop and portage over things constantly are often more secluded and have a OG freestyle element to it. Great video! I traded in my 2022 Levo for a 2023 Levo SL and love it. The Levo was way over powered and I was just the passenger. I ride the SL with the motor mostly in off or eco modes and only use trail mode to assist on climbs and it's nice to get 4000 ft of vert per ride. I like your idea to ride with extended battery and leave the main battery home... cut some more weight but still have some power to help with the climbs.

The integrated battery quite frankly is a deterrent for me because I know how many smart phones I've replaced over the years because the batter doesn't hold a charge. I agree about the lighter battery. I have an Oso now (have you tested one yet???) and mostly love it, but I haven't really been able to get along with it after a bunch of miles. Always feel like I have to muscle the bike around everywhere. My suspicions were correct when I demo'ed a 2023 Orbea Wild here in Phoenix. Even while it had the heavier of the 2 battery options, it was a much nicer bike to ride, especially in the corners. I have a 2024 on order with the smaller battery, I'll be selling the Oso very soon.

I’ve been riding my Specialized turbo levo for about 5 months or 1000 miles. It Waze 52 pounds which definitely took some getting used to, but I think one thing to note is a heavier bike can actually benefit in particular riding styles. The riding I do in Santa Cruz California is super steep and chunky. Normally, it would be difficult to get through these trails fast without clips however, riding flats on E bike, it stays so planted that there are certain trails I’ve done faster because of the ebike. Mind you I ride with the bike off on the downhill.

I also have a bike I converted for my wife and it follows the idea you are liking where the battery is small(about 250wh) and the weight is very low so it actually ride alot like the original bike(giant stance). If I needed more than 20 miles I get out of a battery it would be easily hot swappable but so far hasnt needed it. Just for perspective it only weighs 42lbs where my carbon frame yt is over 10lbs heavier with only 250wh more and weight much higher so less playful bike.

I agree about the power and weight. I'm a 6'3", 270lb, 55-year-old, experienced cyclist. I have a Trek EXe (50Nm/360w/42lbs) which is in the same class as the Rise. As big as I am, I don't need more power. There is enough power to make riding a pretty casual affair.
It's way easier to ride hard and it's making me want to ride more. I'm more inclined to ride a fast 6-9 miles instead of spinning out 15 miles. It's a better workout in half the time. If I miss a few weeks of riding, it's not a big deal. The assist is there.
And if I want to ride further, I can lower the assist and spin, or carry an extra battery. What's not to love..other than the price?* 😬
    *It's been worth every penny!

The full power for me is only good if you are wanting to do shuttle runs or the very odd tricky climb, however you have to be careful it doesn’t spin out the wheel. It’s almost too much. Also, mine has a 500mw battery, and it’s fine, but all new bikes are going with bigger and bigger batteries and i don’t think people realize what you actually need. More isn’t always better.

How much do you weigh? last i tested a kenevo sl it was harder to climb anything thats not a fireroad grade than my regular bike, at 180lbs. on the other hand a 85nm bike can go over anything. 60nm motors, depends, at my weight its borderline

You should try the Yamaha e-bike. It has a small 500 batterie and has 27.5 size tires. It also has 170mm of travel.

I'm surprised at how much you were able to ride the Rocky Emtb, my brother's was literally in and out of the shop on warranty repairs for the battery, motor, or controller all crapped out at one time or another.

Without the climb, the joy of the descent wouldn't be complete. These ebikes do look fun though.

How about two smaller batteries? One smaller battery down low on the down tube. One thin battery in the seat tube that the dropper post could slip over.

I don't think you are wrong. The only part that was left out was how much your own fitness plays into account. You ride all the time and can pedal a normal bike up 3k feet of climbing without dying. A lot of the rest of us aren't quite that fit :)

I totally agree with what you said with the novelty of an ebike. They're exciting and novel at first, but after a while, they just arnt satisfying to ride. I spent a couple years swapping back and forth between a trek rail and a couple different pedal bikes. Just recently I decided to leave the ebike behind, and I really don't miss it at all.

Ebikes certainly help someone trying to get back into shape too. How much can you squat Jeff? I just want to hit 200 lbs by next season but I've got a loooooong way to go.

Depends on how they are used. Roosting them like a motorcycle will inevitably cause more trail erosion especially on climbs

Weird how the best riders and racers are adopting ebikes as part of the larger sport. Training DH, scoping new trails, doing recovery rides or just fitting in a fast ride. Ebikes are here to stay no matter how much the purists hate them.

My issue is the name you guy come up for products. Acoustics is the science of sound. An acoustic guitar uses vibration from strings by moving air through essentially a box to make sound. Why not just say traditional bike? It doesn’t sound so corny for those of us that are musicians as well as riders. Lol😊
