    Yes, management skills are sorely undervalued in public health. Solicitation of feedback and managerial knowledge of the nitty gritty of the work is not there in my state agency. The managers see their work as being easy; they simply decree their ideas the best (authoritarian style) and ignore the festering issues in ancient business processes, only paying lip service to the idea of making improvements long enough to zone out for the day on poorly organized conference calls.
    The managers are lucky if they have someone they supervise that actually cares about the processes, but it will be an uphill battle to get change from that starting point. Public health in America must be in an even sorer shape than the system of Ireland, where there is at least acknowledgement of the value of public life.
    Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

    This is a great video, I especially like the quandrants. It gave me a better idea of where to focus my knowledge seeking to become a stronger public/global health candidate. I just completed my masters in international development and worked in Liberia for 6 years in the education and health sectors. I have functional knowledge (quadrant 3) and currently taking online courses through CDC to gain the technical knowledge (quadrant 1), so it is necessary for me to get a second masters? Do you have any suggestions of my approach for breaking in to the field?

    • @gregmartin
      @gregmartin  Před 8 lety

      Thanks for the question Wanneh. My feeling is that if you already have a masters and you are clearly making an effort to broaden your knowledge and skill, you really don't need another masters degree. International development is a great stepping stone to global health and there are a lot of overlapping themes and issues. My suggestion is that you identify a development issue that you're interested in that has significant implications for health and focus on that. Good luck!!

    Thank you for your extremely useful video (indeed the whole series is excellent). I am a junior doctor working in the UK with an interest in a career in Global Health. I am planning to do a Master's at LSHTM in the next year or so. In the video you mentioned various online resources for developing in skills in management, leadership and governance. Other than doing a course in Excel or an MBA, are there any particular online courses that you would recommend for those at an earlier stage of their career such as myself to develop these skills?

    Thank you for useful information ! I'm graduating from school this year and I understand that I want to work in a field that would somehow combine medicine, math and ecinomics, so I figured that Public or Global Health will be a right choice. However, I'm still uncertain, whether to start right off with Bachelor in Public health or to take a different approach and start with Bachelor in Management and then do a MPH degree. I know that I'll certainly need some knowledge of management principles, but I have a feeling that in case of starting with management I'll miss a lot of crucial skills and knowledge that are taught during Bachelor in PH. What would you recommend ?

    • @gregmartin
      @gregmartin  Před 7 lety

      Thanks for the interesting question Nikita. So the short answer is that there isn't a simple answer but I'll give you what insights I can. There are two ways of looking at this. On the one hand, at an early stage in your career, the most important (and sometimes difficult) thing for you to do is to try and understand scope of public health (and so position yourself to gather the needed skills to add value). In that sense, doing the Bachelor in Public Health would be a great start. On the other hand, if you're doing to do an MPH anyway, getting the combination of management and public health as complimentary skill sets will make you very marketable once you start looking for a job. Its a tricky one. There are no wrong options here. The important thing is that you're passionate about whatever you study - enjoy it! Good luck (sorry about the vague answer).

    Very informative Dr. Martin! I am in a process of applying to various global health programs. I have just come back from two years in Tanzania volunteering and learning about the developing countries health issues. I have a quick question to you.
    Is there a big difference between Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Science in Global Health?
    After doing research, I found different schools offer different programs... and I am a little lost here.....
    Thank you!

    • @gregmartin
      @gregmartin  Před 7 lety

      Thanks for the question Minkyung. An MPH is Masters in Public Health and will focus mostly on the skills and competencies that you need to be effective within a national health program. Masters degrees that focus on "global health" usually dig a little deeper on issues that affect many countries (they often focus on developing countries). Each program will have its own strengths and emphasis. Good luck! And enjoy!! :)

I am currently a US pharmacy student (finishing my first year) and I really, really would like to work for WHO when I graduate (I'll have a doctorate in Pharmacy when I finish and I already have a Bachelor's in Biochemistry). +Li G Hi there - the MPH is not an absolute requirement but it does depend a little on what job you're applying for (some of the advertised jobs do stipulate having an MPH as a requirement). Many of the jobs require that you have a masters level education. The number of years of experience that you have in a given field is also important.

There are also a lot of jobs out there that do require that you have a masters degree in order to apply. That said, there are lots of people working in public health that come from different backgrounds and don't have a masters in public health. If you are able to, however, I would recommend it.

      Hi there - thanks for the question Pramod. I'm delighted that you're interested in public health. As a starting point there are many fields that you could study (depending on your interests). Ultimately you should do a Masters in Public Health at some point but as a starting point you could study biology (if you're interested in infectious disease), maths (if you're interested in statistical analysis), politics (if you're interested in health policy), psychology (if you're interested in behaviour change to improve health) etc. etc. I suggest that you study something that you're interested in and you'll find the connections to public health.

However, you could consider doing a Masters in Epidemiology and making that your area of focus from the get go. Of course with time you'll need to learn about other aspects of public health (but that's doable outside of a formal programme). Hope that helps.

    • @gregmartin
      @gregmartin  Před 8 lety

      +C4RLO5KY Absolutely! During your MPH programme, just take a special interest in the epidemiology and biostatistics side of things. Let your professors know that its an interest that you have. Many MPH programmes give you some flexibility with regard to the course work. In either event, once you have the MPH, you'll be able to shape your career and develop skills and gain experience in whatever direction you like. If you're into epidemiology, that's very doable! Dear Greg... Could you please advise what position can one with an MD in child health get in WHO or UNICEF? Also could you please suggest how to apply ?

      The best way to understand what WHO and UNICEF are looking for is to download the Terms Of Reference for some of their existing job adverts and read through them carefully. You'll be able to find job adverts on their respective webpages.

      Global Health with Greg Martin Thanks dear Greg . Could I ask you a very specific thing- Can one get any job related to clinical medicine (I’m a pediatrician) in un? Sorry if I bother you repeatedly as I know it’s the third time you are replying to my queries.
