Sports physician Marcus persuades his unstable brother David to come with him and train for a bicycle race across the Rocky Mountains. He doesn't tell him that he has a brain aneurysm which could render him paralyzed or dead at any given moment. While David powerfully heads for the victory, Marcus has to realize that the contest is now beyond his capabilities. Features great views of the Rockies and an insight in the tactics of bicycle races.

I sad this movie over 400 times growing up. Hey, had it in the small vhs collection and that’s just what my generation did. Can’t believe this movie is so unheard of now. One of the best sports movies ever made.

Left a long lasting impression on the recreational cycling in America. Kevin Kostner and David Grant are perfect playing brothers worried about their family's health while entering a bicycle competition. Blends good family drama with an enthusiastic love for the sport. The bike scenes are terrific, expertly filmed, well edited, and give such a rush of suspense and adrenaline through the Colorado Rockies. The rider and the biker work as one.

Love this movie. Just purchased it on dvd after all these years. I had it on vhs and gave it on loan to someone and never got it back. I hate when that happened lol

I did love this movie despite its numerous improbably scenes and themes: a guy who has just been recreational riding around St. Louis comes out of nowhere to win a stage race in the mountains with no team support, no officials following the final breakaway, etc. A lot of the racing scenes were shot in and around the Coors Classic, which was cool.
It happened more in the 70's & 80's than you might believe !! 🚴🦈
This reminds me of my VHS copy of Gremlins, it had this trailer, Police Academy 3, National Lampoon's European Vacation and Rocky IV 😄

I remember watching this movie in high school in the 90s.
It was meant to be a pc tear jerker of a movie.
A friend just recommended this to me. I loved Breaking Away (1979) but for some reason i never saw this. Looks like i will check it out.
American Flyers will go down as one of the most inspiring films I've ever seen. Back in my school days, I used to love watching the remake of this film, which is _Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar 1992._ The Bollywood remake is loosely based on the original and it has it's own greatness to it. The 1985 one is so darn inspiring! I can only imagine what it must be like watching this in the 80s. Will always be grateful to have this experience.
