Lol...you dont have a clue what you're talking about right? Did you even watch the video? Seeing how that park is filled with trees I reckon those "Damn Americans" used our technology perfectly.
That's a nice story. A decade ago I was in Golden Gate park en was wondering why there were windmills standing at the other end of the ocean (I'm from The Netherlands). After more than 10 years I've got the answer! The Dutch used windmills to pump the water out. In the 1800's they used steamengines to pump the water out. In modern era we use a genius systeem of canals and big electrical pumps to get the water out. Over one third of The Netherlands is below sealevel and with rising sealevels it's becoming more. Dutch government is making plans to ensure we'll keep our feets dry in the future.
General Issam Zahreddine: Sure, the mills that pump water out in Holland are called watermills. It makes you wonder what the function of a handmill would be... :p Normally, a mill is called to where he got his power from.
I have been in Dutch windmills, they were old and operational. On a windy day in a grain mill it was quite exciting, the whole thing just rumbled and vibrated like the great machines they are.
Thijs van asselt I work on aircraft and for many years Fokker. The construction techniques and harnessing all that power is similar to aircraft. I enjoyed visiting Holland, seeing things so different than in the US was great.
Where does the water come from? Most plants aren't that good at processing saline water (read: they die), so are these mills getting fresh water from somewhere, or are these some very special plants? Oh, and by the way, you're doing a reverse dutchie: Pumping water back into the land, instead of pumping it out :P
Because off windmills, the NEtherlands became very powerfull in the world. Around the year 1600 the dutch created the V.O.C (verenigde Oostindische Compangie) Translated U.E.C (United Eastindien Company, and the needed alot off ships. The dutch invention the windmill became very inportend and the used them to machenise work. Such as wood sawing. This work method alow the Dutch to build alot of ships. 3 a 4 times more then other piowelfull countrys like England, Spain, POrtugal. Sorry for my bad english, I 'm Dutch!
its kinda the opposite as what we used it for. we used it to pump away, then it was used to pump it in. also on the places beneath sea level, especially those with clayground. really really foggy cause high groundwater level. dont wear make up in morning. it will be like you went through rain. you get wet. without the annoying of rain. with the cold tjough
Minor correction from a fellow Dutch: some of our mills were used for both reasons at the same time ... pumping the water away from the 'residential area' to nearby agricultural area(s). (why use two when one suffices?)
I am glad that you read all the comments and I have come across this respectively older video, I am subscribed to your channel and there are some friends of mine whom I introduced to your channel as always keep up the good work and be an inspiration.
Should have used a picture of Kinderdijk to illustrate Dutch windmills pumping water. Because not only do the Kinderdijk windmills present a more impressive sight, but they were also actually used to manage the water. The windmills of the Zaanse Schans, which you showed in your video, were all industrial windmills: used to make goods.
it's about 26% that is actually below sea level (and 29% additional area that is prone to flooding) The problem is, when people look at the Netherlands, that both North and South Holland are both for more than 60% below sea level and these 2 provinces are as we know "The Netherlands" when it comes to foreigners and our government. Groningen is only important because of gas, Friesland only when it is very very cold. The other provinces are "just there" and for "the Hague" don't really count (except with elections of course)
The ironic thing is that the saying is always a subject in geology in middleschool, but to counter it, they most times point to the hunderds of years we dug to extract the peat. Wich happened in the part of the country now under the sealevel. Wich combined with the natural subsidence of the swamp like ground. Caused the ground to go from just a few centimeters below sea level to now amsterdam being 4 meters below sea level.
As a tourist guide on a Dutch working grainmill, I tell people how ‘easily’ they can be moved. Our windmill, built in the 17th Century can be taken apart and moved by ship to be build up at another place. Beams are numbered like an ikea package
Trace, you should get yourself a copy of A Short History of San Francisco by Tom Cole, well worth a read, full of so many interesting stories about SF!
I like the way you talk about the history and what you can learn in the time you otherwise spend on stuff like twitter, FB or insta. (And I love windmills) I'm Dutch) ;)
Trace, love your videos! Just wanted to make a suggestion for another video topic: Bitcoin! It’s been in the news a lot lately but I don’t really understand it. When you break things down I get it, so you would be great!
I have a phobia of windmills. I know that sounds like a joke haha but I’m serious. I had a bad experience with them when I was little. Anyway cool video 😊👍🏼
So, what else did the Dutch do with all that disposable mechanical energy these windmills provided? They built a fleet that in today's terms was bigger in cost than the entire USA navy today, including all them superexpensive carriers. Safe to say, at that time, we had influence all over the world and we were considered a superpower. From wind to superpower on the planet, go figure ;D
...Because...... a modest part of the USA was inhabited by Dutch people? As a famous example 'New York' .. what was New Amsterdam .. Harlem = Haarlem Brooklyn = Breukelen. Yankees = Jan and Kees Dollar = Daalder Stoop = Stoep (etc.) Brabant, West Virginia = Brabant, Netherlands
These wind mills are about as far from the former new Amsterdam than than new Amsterdam was from the actual Amsterdam. This area has never been settled by Dutch colonists.
The water is supposed to be pumped TOWARDS the sea, not FROM the sea! Damn Americans using our technology incorrectly!
I know right XD
Echt hé :P
Lol...you dont have a clue what you're talking about right? Did you even watch the video? Seeing how that park is filled with trees I reckon those "Damn Americans" used our technology perfectly.
ribendende sarcasm, a joke ever heard of it

Great video. It is always cool to see Dutch stuff in the U.S. I love to see more things connected to my country.
....? Well I would call it a windmill. Of beter gezegd een (wind)molen :D

Littering continues to baffle me. I mean, you carried that bottle all the way out here, why can't you carry it back?
Great video and good work, Trace!
SAME. Hold onto it until you get to a frickin' trashcan! GAHD.
Love seeing vids like these, miss seeing you on Dnews, would love to see more of these trace!
DNews still exists, it's just called Seeker now! I'm still there.

So cool!!
Trace Dominguez
Very powerful.
upside downdog I personally never found them that captivating, since I am Dutch I know their importantness, but it never seems that interesting.

Let's not forget the largest city in the US is New York City, which used to be called New Amsterdam because the Dutch founded it.

The name Yankee is from the Dutch name Jan Kees.

This was a fun story, thank you 🙂
When people tell me they're bored I tell them they're not paying attention.
JeffinBville so what? Do you think boredom doesn't exist or something??
as a dutch person, that windmill look weird. war to thin and the roof and thingy in the back 2.
Ironically the Murphy windmill looks more like a dutch style windmill than the Dutch windmill
there more like tower than windmils unless there completly wood
I don't usually comment on youtube, but Trace, if you're reading this, I absolutely love what you say about being curious in the last 2 minutes.
thank you! curiosity is super important. :)
4:22 Ha! Good pun.

Nice video but there are plenty of places in the Netherlands that are above sea level.
That's true! I hope you didn't feel misrepresented
Nope.i myself was born above sea level.

I like the way you talk about the history and what you can learn in the time you otherwise spend on stuff like twitter, FB or insta. (And I love windmills) I'm Dutch) ;)
Great video!
Ask the mayor of San Fransisco to install a generator in the windmills.
Now they can turn wind energy into electric energy.
Oohh! Great idea
In the Netherlands we have machines to clean the beaches :-)
I've seen one at Katwijk.
They can be harmful to creatures that live in the beach sand :(
That is awesome! Had no clue.
Hehe. I live in Schiedam, The Netherlands and I am looking at multiple windmills as we speak :). We also have the biggest windmill in the world!
Thank you for sharing, wandering history lessons like this are really cool. 8)
thanks :D
Ah humans, always finding ways to make an area that shouldn't support life support life
Next stop Mars!!
Personally Im looking forward to airships on Venus!
Sadly enough, humans are better in making areas unfit for life.

Did you flip that old video? The mill in your video rotates the wrong way around. The old mills here in the Netherlands all rotate to the left.
I have a phobia of windmills.
I know that sounds like a joke haha but I’m serious. I had a bad experience with them when I was little.
Anyway cool video 😊👍🏼
Nikxleta E. Lol
Where did he touch u?
What a lovely story. I'm assuming the windmills are now just for show? Stay observant and curious, friends!
Just for show *now* yeah, but I'd love to see inside!

That joke ain't (mill)right.

Wasn't it pumping salt water then?
It was pumping water from under the dunes, which is freshwater!
Dude, You doing something with this channel?
Yep!
Great to hear. I will be sticking around then.
I live in the dutch
Daniel13st Stoppels What's that ? 🤔. Nobody lives in the Dutch.. You live in The Netherlands. Or The Kingdom of the Netherlands.
No he actually lives inside Dutch people, quite annoying.
as finishing touch god created the dutch
...Because...... a modest part of the USA was inhabited by Dutch people?
