Captain James Cook: The incredible true story of the World's Greatest Navigator and Cartographer
Vložit
- čas přidán 8. 07. 2021
- Captain James Cook, a British Navigator, Cartographer and explorer was one of the pre-eminent sailors and innovators of his age. Now a controversial figure for indigenous cultures who see him as the instigator and symbol of European colonial expansion and genocide; the real James Cook was actually quite a different man to what has been imagined. Coming from abject poverty in rural Yorkshire England; raised among the pacifist and hard working Quakers, he dreamed of sailing to far off lands in the pacific since he was a boy. Working as an apprentice aboard a grubby Whitby Cat collier, he soon proved himself a hard working and competent sailor. He was later to join the Royal Navy and sail to Canada, taking part in the siege of Louisburg and Quebec, while learning the cartography and surveying skills that were to revolutionise the Navy from that time on. James Cook circumnavigated the globe three times, charted approximately a third of the unknown coastlines of the globe; beginning with his first voyage aboard the Endeavour, with Naturalists Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander. He was the first man to sail below, and above the 70th parallel, and his regime of hygiene and fresh food revolutionised the management of scurvy while at sea. For this, he was admitted as a fellow to the Royal Society, as well as raised from the rank of Master, to Lieutenant and then Post Captain -something that would otherwise have caused a scandal among the high society gentry, if it were not for his incredible reputation. In all three of his major voyages, spanning twenty years, he never lost one crew member to the disease, which was an astonishing achievement when compared to a 40% plus death rate that was typical of long range voyages in the time preceding his. His untimely murder in Hawaii robbed the world of a humble, humane and dedicated leader, whose legacy now risks being tarnished by historical revisionists more focused on political activism than historical reality.

The fact that Cook came from a poor family, and excelled so high based purely on MERIT & good principles, despite the discrimination of him for not being a Gentleman, is absolutely astounding and shows what an individual can accomplish despite their position in life.
More more I mature in life most wealthy people are really not that smart or good people 🤷🏼♂️ just like anything not all of them are like that but a great amount I would say.
Very well said. Here's to Captain Cook's memory.

@taneh-d4065 Funny how Tupaia didn't know about New Zealand. Funny how pottery skills were as far as Tonga and Samoa, but not New Zealand. Also, it'll be silly not to use a guide when there's one. One who's place of birth was "stolen" by other Polynesians. He was of great use in New Zealand (which Cook went to because of Tasman's discovery) as he could communicate. None of that in Australia though, nor did he know Australia existed. Cook was a great man and so was Tupaia.
No matter your own perception of this man , it is not important. This man was beyond an absolute genius.

Back in the year 1999 I was in Newport Harbor S. California when a replica of the James Cook sailing ship on a world tour was docked at the Newport Marine Museum and I had a opportunity to board her. By today’s standards it was small and the living space between the deck area set up for the soldiers on board for protection was no more than five feet high. To imagine leaving port headed out on the open sea and not knowing what is over the horizon or how long before you reached land and if your food and supply’s would last etc. really made me realize how brave Captain Cook and his sailors were. Truly exceptional and talented men who we owe a gratitude of thanks for expanding our knowledge of the world.😂

I find it fascinating how cartographers were able to map and even just navigate the world back then. It’s very impressive
Makes you wonder how pacific islanders navigated the largest ocean and settled so many islands hundred of years before.
In my opinion from going to Easter island, Peru, Mexico, Egypt, honestly believe we as modern humans are missing huge history before the great flood at the end of the ice age and way before. Too many amazing impossible engineering triumphs we cannot achieve even today with that much precision even with g.p.s.. history is written by the victors obviously, since the perceived losers, don’t get to publish and distribute lies to their subjects. A dog cud figure out that humans make up and lie to boast their theory or position for money, greed, power, safety even. Every story, human history story should be re-examined, so that we learn from the past to not repeat the mistakes by promoting lies from the start.
And the accuracy of their work.
@SnackPack913 imaging doing that 200 years before Cook, that's what Spanish and Portuguese explorers did.

This was one of the most well presented documentaries I have seen in quite a while. I was born in New Zealand and came to Australia at the age of 5, in 1980. While we did learn about James Cook in school, I really had no knowledge about his early life and how he worked his way up through hard work, kindness to his fellow man, and determination. My favorite part, however, is the point that was made at the end. Being the best person you can be, and helping others. I wonder how many of those dim witted vandals would follow that path, or even understand it for that matter. Thankyou.

I do believe this is another device of those who aim to divide and rule. What is the point of bickering over the past, that cannot be changed? Consider who's hands your playing into.

Coming from a town of 50% Maori I am well aware of anti Cook sentiment and the lack back fill knowledge of his history. We have been trying to raise education of all navigators particularly the skill of the Polynesians. It's funny actually because for a long time Hawaii was known as the "Sandwich Islands", and the British Empire respected Hawaiian sovereignty.
Then the United States came and just took it by force.
To this day, Hawaii has a Union Jack on their state flag, as a sign of deep respect and admiration of the British, because of Captain Cook.
But I like to think that it's on there just as a big "F*** You" to the United States.
China was 1000 miles away, GB half way around the world.
@Romano Barca You might want to look up the definition of the word "Pirate" or better yet, the word "Privateer" , neither of those labels applies to Captain Cook.
so amazing '
Well put, history is history and cannot be erased.
Not according to whitefella agenda's.
Yeah na it can be erased & changed to fit narratives
What a wonderful and accurate account.
No figure, good or evil, should ever be “cancelled”. You need to learn good AND bad to progress into the future
Thank you so much for watching, and for sharing such a generous comment!
If we should go about cancelling people who are not perfect, we would have to cancel everybody!!!😮
I don't know how far this madness will go, but the pendulum will swing back eventually. I hope.
An absolutely Brilliant Documentary! Should be compulsory viewing and study in all schools particularly Australian. From such great men we can truly learn worthwhile philosophies and elements of personal 'Endeavour' that are desparately lacking in contemporary society and culture. Men like Cook should be mirrored and looked up to by future generations Globaly!
THANK YOU for producing this wonderful and factual history lesson on of this most influential and humble human beings Captain James Cook. I wish that this documentary would be shown in our schools before they leave school and are indoctrinated by those wishing to smear his heroism.
The act of removing a statue that celebrates the unwelcomed takeover by foreigners do not constitute the erasing or eradication of history, villain or not. It simply says that Cook's legacy is not something that the descendants of it believe should be honored as a heroic act due to the damaging long term effects his arrival has had on the Native ancestors & culture no matter how civil Cook is perceived by the current non-indigenous descendants of Europe
@@wendellwiggins3776 so many words but so little said

Allan, mate this was worded and made so well. Massive respect to you sir. Such an important contribution to the internet this here.
Thats all the encouragement i need to keep going. Believe me at times you need a thick skin! Appreciate your support and generous comments!
Fascinating ! Cook was hero in all sense of the word. Glad to have come across this video.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for discovering my country. New Zealand
You're welcome.
What a treat! One of the best history documentaries I've seen in a long time.
The truth is always far more nuanced than a simple matter of right and wrong.
Cook's voyages resulted in advances that have benefited almost the whole of mankind.
How can we be anything other than thankful?
Thanks so much for your generous comment. I felt his true story needed to be told, to distance him from the manipulation by political agendas of all kinds. I appreciate your viewing my work, and I hope it keeps on doing the same things this one does
Agreed, this was a remarkably detailed and unbiased account of a great human innovator driven by the desire to improve himself and the human condition. The statue defilers offer only a return to the dark ages and brutish existence in oppressed misery. Cook was a liberator, a navigator in every sense of the word.
This was incredible. Reminded me why history and science were many favorite subjects in school. How remarkable, that remarkable people be forgotten in anger and lost in ignorance. The unfairness of past governments and their atrocities committed affects all of us in some way, Cook included. We can’t change the future by forgetting our past.
What a brilliant in-depth unbiased account - so well and comprehensively told - a leader amongst Documentaries and a great achievement for its creator …….
Wow, thank you so much for your generous praise! Such comments make all the hard work worthwhile.
While on summer vacations on the Black Sea side during 1975 - 1980), I had a chance to find in the special library, dedicated to wars on the sea, in Sevastopol (a port in Crimea) a translated version of captain's journal during his journey's. It was amazing experience reading Cook's daily notes, I remember to these days.
Wonderful production. Thankyou for the detail and the truth. The narrator did an excellent job.
It's comments like yours that make it all worthwhile. Thanks so much for supporting my channel!
James Cook has been one of my heroes for decades.
I have taken photos of statues of Cook in Melbourne, Dunedin, Anchorage and my home town of Victoria BC - the one thrown into the Inner Harbour recently, by those who do not know and don't wish to know his story.
All the brainwashed punks that would tear the statue down would never watch this documentary. So sad.
Thank you for a worthy documentary. Forgive us our ignorance.😊
The ignorant attack what they don't understand.
PLEASE DON'T BE A RACISTAPHOBE!!!!!! 👁👄👁
Without his work in Cartography and determination that none of a ship's crew need die the Royal Navy would never have done as much as it did.
This is such a good message, and tribute to Captain Cook. He was a great navigator, and no way responsible for the miss treatment of the indigenous people.
Thankyou, I'm glad it resonated with you. Thanks for watching!
A typical reply aye!
Honneur et respect pour le Capitaine Cook ! 🇬🇧
From France, with much respect for this great man. 🇫🇷
Captain James Cook brewed the first beer in New Zealand good on ya mate what a bloody legend!!.
You just made my day! How could I have missed that. Who says you can't learn something new every day!
Haha Was that a TUI's or a DB?
Well who invented throwing another shrimp on the BARBIE, Miss Cook
Spruce Beer is quite popular in NZ
@Billy Bones, on Vancouver Island we call Auzzi beer *"CS Beer"* because you'll need a good gag reflex to drink it.
Wow , This outstanding documentary ,✨brought tears to my eyes. Captain Cook 💫 is example to all mankind in character and spirit. What an inspiring story that is heartfelt of the knowledge of this amazing man that gave so much, and he personal sacrifices of family and life.✨🇦🇺🕊 Thank you for sharing 👍
Wow, thank you!
Cook was an inspiration to all Mariners Excellent documentary
This is really cool, love hearing this from an Australian as well. Thanks from America 🇦🇺🇺🇲
Glad you enjoyed it! Time an aussie had a crack at history- thanks for your encouragement!
@@heroesandlegends This wasn't a crack; This was a home run. From someone who has made a few videos, this was fantastic. Thanks for all your hard work on this. I enjoyed every minute. 👍👍
A fascinating and very well written and produced story of a wonderfull man.Thank you very much.
We can only hope that all generations both current and future learn their history instead of trying to cancel it.
I am from Great Ayton. I lived and worked in Whitby. The history of Captain Cook was introduced to me at a very young age. I thoroughly enjoyed your production. 😊
Thanks for sharing!
He sailed along the Antarctic coast for 60,000 miles and found no inlet. I learned this at school in NZ when I was 11. I think he was a great explorer and worthy of being remembered.
His mast broke while exploring the north so he returned to Hawaii for repairs where he was not welcomed anymore, got mad that they stole one of his ships so he attempted to kidnap their king in order to force them to give it back, killed one of his guardsmen and then fired first upon the locals who surrounded their king that were just trying to protect him. Doesn’t sound like much of a hero. That’s why his statues are being defaced around your colonies. (not to mention he brought them gonorhhea).
@saltyballs2095 You made this up in your silly mind didn't you. 😂
And all you do is make CZcams comments. You’ve got nothing on Cook.
Son of a Scotsman and loved his father's birthplace but still set sail for Oz he was a man ahead of his times🏴🇬🇧🥳
More correctly, James Cook was a man OF his times.
Thank you for an excellent job ! So sad what the natives did to heroic Captain Cooke-he was a brilliant man
The man got what he deserved lol
This went into my GOAT playlist
Thanks, I'm glad it brought you value!
Brilliant Documentary about an amazing man.
Glad you enjoyed it!
It is good to see someone bothered to research and put out the facts of this extraordinary man. He worked hard for everything he earned. Much respect must be paid to him. The best way to stop false stories about historical figures is to research their lives. Reporting it to back everyone who cares to know the truth. Captain James Cook certainly does not need to be misjudged by people who did not even live in his time period.
It's hard to accurately "judge"- let's say assess, anything without the benefit of hindsight, which can only be accomplished after many intervening years, between an event and it's assessment
@@Littleblackbones probably several reasons
@@Littleblackbones It is simple as to why the Hawaiians killed Cook! They were cannibals and Cook was just another tasty lunch for them!!!😅
Thank you for the informative, comprehensive biography of this exemplary man.
Great, great man, leader 👏 James Cook
Excellent coverage of this truly amazing man, thank you. It’s so sad that uneducated ignorant people today take such a stance.
Well said
Captain Cook was a true hero! He thoroughly deserves to be applauded historically as a great navigator and explorer as well as a pioneer of nutrition with citrus and vegetable diets complimented with a clothes and body washing regime!
Awesome man he deserves nothing but respect. Educate yourself before you judge
I just try to imagine how it must have been to meet these cultures for the very first time. Mind Boggling!
Sir, my heartfelt gratitude to you for posting this video....an excellent production....
Thank you kindly!
This. This is what quality history content looks like. Also, after learning about Cook, he definitely is a historical figure worth learning about. A truly good man who did his best to help those around him and not cause others to suffer.
Thanks so much for your generous comment! I felt compelled to produce this film and I'm glad it resonated with so many people.
@@heroesandlegends You deserve to be proud of this. I can only imagine how many man-hours it took to finish, and I am certainly grateful that you did! 😊
I could not agree more
One thing I learned in university, keep so-called, "progressive" historians away from anything to do with history, they'll turn it around to fit their own prejudices & hatreds. I learned a long time back, that the truest treatment of our history were books written before these faux-historians were born.
@@heroesandlegendsYou alone are more valuable than the last 29 yrs of history channel content lol seriously
Full of admiration for him, a man ahead of the times. I've sailed on the UK's exposed east coast, New Zealand's Marlborough Sounds where he laid up the Endeavour and seen some of his Alaskan waters, a forbidding patch of water it there ever was one. Until GPS I was still using charts based on his recordings. His observations must have saved so many lives.
I'm glad the story resonated with you. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts too.
Yes he was the first man to navigate with a time piece, a time piece invented by a fellow Yorkshire carpenter. Before that the distance from Greenwich wasn't known so ships sailed along latitudes.
Some of the charts the US Navy used in World War II dated back to the Dutch and Captain Cook.
@@williamjensen365 Some of his charts were still in use until very recently. I forget which but perhaps it was South Island NZ.
I loved all that I read re the great, brave Capt. Cook. Thanks for putting this on CZcams. We need such to help educate people, (& thrill many.)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great! Thx! James Cook - a hero of mankind indeed!

They are protesting and angry about injustice. It is not a legal way to protest, but in their view much has been destroyed by white colonists. Perhaps they are more informed about that than you are?
