    Thank you for documenting this beautiful drive. I've always loved driving up and down the Coquihalla, I miss it so much now that I've moved out east. There's nothing else quite like it here.

    At about the 25:50 point of this excellent video, 'you' pass the former location of the 14 lane wide Toll Plaza. It had 13 toll booths all in the north/east bound lanes. (You were essentially paying for a round trip whether you were going one way or not.)
    Tolls were collected from 1986 through to 2008 and of course varied from a low rate for motorcycles, up for passenger vehicles, to single rear axle medium duty trucks, to tractor trailers, to double transport rigs (BTrains). 🇨🇦

    One of the good thing about this way of driving is - there is nothing to worry about the weather, because the weather is always the best it can be. The weather always becomes major concern whenever I personally go there for driving in person. But now I am having the same pleasure completely worry free!

    A lengthy comment about the history of the Coquihalla Highway route from Hope to Merritt BC was posted today partly as a correction to Neil MacKenzie's claim that this section of what's now designated as a portion of BC's Highway 5 was built prior to 1972 under the government of Premier WAC Bennett.
    A brief history of the highway route which opened during May of 1986 (largely following the former route of the Kettle Valley Railway) is included. 🇨🇦

    We drove Vancouver to Jasper via Kamloops in 2016 and Vancouver to Calgary last year both times in September , great drives and a good time of the year . The previous time we had done those roads was back in 1971 on what was called the Yellow Head trail in those days from Jasper heading west was mainly gravel . A lot easier now !!

      Premier Bill Bennett's dream of a four lane freeway to British Columbia's interior. I just wish they had continued it right to the Alberta boundary. I believe it's 30 years young now.

    The camera is located right front of the hood outside the car, that is the reason why the hood is not visible. All what we have is a complete beautiful scenery - just like three dementianal camera. It is a work of a genious and professional cameraman. He knows! How to make the video interesting, enjoyable and attractive. Excelent achievement!

    • @markpimlott2879
      @markpimlott2879 Před rokem +1

      Yes; it's a very well shot video bringing back many memories of driving the route between 1986 and 2004 under a wide variety of conditions.
      However the reason that "the hood" that you mention isn't visible is because motorcycles don't have one! 🏍 🛵 🏍

      The Coq was largely built in about 20 months, intending to open coinciding with Expo 86 in Vancouver during early May! It officially opened from Hope to Merritt on May 16th, 1986. (I first drove it up to the 14-lane Toll Plaza on the Coquihalla Summit about two weeks later between early morning and late afternoon Mountain 🐐 Goat summer range population survey flights with Valley Helicopters, in that area. I.e. As Wildlife Biologists with the BC Wildlife Branch, in this case, funded by the BC Ministry of Transportation and Highways' Coquihalla Hwy environmental impact assessment activities.)
      Planning including surveying the route from Hope to Merritt began during Premier Dave Barrett's NDP government from 1972 to 1975. However the vast majority of it was built during Mini WAC's tenure. I.e. Premier Bill Bennett was WAC Bennett's son.
      It was a Toll Highway from 1986 through to 2008!
      The speed limit was the highest in BC at 110 km/hr (68 mph). It was raised to 120 klicks (75 mph) during 2014. The province implemented a variable speed limit corridor around the Coquihalla Summit during 2016, in an attempt to increase safety during adverse weather conditions.
      The Hope to Merritt portion of the Coquihalla Hwy (5) largely follows the former route of the Kettle Valley Railway (although that line avoided the steep grades associated with the Coquihalla Summit). All of the stations and railway maintenance points were named after Shakespeare characters, many of which remain as named locations and intersections along the present highway. E.g. Othello, Iago, Portia, Juliette, etc.
      PS i was a resident of British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦 for 31 years working in the field of wildlife conservation and environmental management.
