- Released in the year 2000, Chaka Khan performed a set of jazz-inspired songs for the BET "Jazz Channel" series. This particular song was one she recorded back in 1982 with a cooperative group of jazz legends aptly called "Echoes of an Era". It is a George and Ira Gershwin chestnut taken from their "Porgy & Bess" masterwork.
Lineup:
Chaka Khan - vocals
Melvin Davis - bass
Mark Stephens - piano
Vinnie Colaiuta - drums
Andy Weiner - keyboards, flugelhorn - Hudba
I never got the central conflict in this song on a visceral level until Chaka Khan's version.
I have this concert on DVD. It is a wonderful journey with a very talented artist.
I do too. Big missed opportunity not putting it out on any digital platform for downloading.
Chaka Baby ❤️ Timeless, Chaka the Voice of Chicago ❤️🌹

I love Chaka Khan but the version sung by Nina Simone is absolutely moving and so beautiful.
Some songs aren't meant to be done over, no disrespect to my girl Chaka Khan but Nina Simone owns this song from the play Porgy and Bess circa 1958 ❤
Well you are entitled to your opinion which I respect. If you want a version filled with pain Billie Holiday does it for me. Porgy and Bess is an opera composed by George Gershwin. There are many outstanding performances by clasically trained opera singers who are able to sing, without the aid of amplification accompanied by a full symphony orchestra, who sing with both emotion, nuance, whilst remaining true to the quality of the Gershwin score. I personally love both opera and jazz, fiully understand that the essence of jazz, whether vocal or instrumental is improvisation. Opinions are subjective. Chaka Khan and Nina Simone overuse riffs and runs, pure affectation, and in so doing destroy the flow of a beautiful melody. Ella Fitzgerland performed I Love you Porgy live in Rome 1959 as a jazz singer she improvised, employing the use of riffs and runs but limiting their use in order not to destroy the flow of the melody. Gershwin composed the opera and cast classically trained opera singers in the first performance 1935.
