- Watch in HD with descriptions: • Starting a Lister JP2 ...
Starting a 1953 Lister JP2 in royalty class motor boat Victoria. The sequence goes like this:
- Check the oil (it's a bit low at the moment!)
- Grease the water pump
- Set the throttle (it's actually overriding the governor)
- Move the valve lifters to open
- Put on the "Patented one man auto start string"
- Place the starting handle
- Make sure your thumbs aren't crossed over the bar (in case of back fire)
- Turn like hell (especially if it's cold)
- Once firing on one cylinder drop the valve lifter on the other cylinder
- Once running up to speed take the throttle over ride off, ensuring that the alternator is charging (light goes off).
The next bit, not normally done unless running under high load (like pulling a loaded butty, or high speed river running), but for the video:
- With enough throttle turn the change-over valves quickly and smartly to the "run" position. This puts a second chamber in communication with the main chamber thus lowering the compression ratio. This reduces stress on the engine, but needs extra heat in the engine to run cleanly. Note that during the change over the cylinder vents outside (hence the need for some throttle).
Note: The engine was hot during this start - in fact I started the engine over 10 times - hence the heavy breathing at times :-)
Never underestimate the capacity of a Lister. We used to run a cement mixer all day on a teacup of fuel and that thing drove the whole team into the ground feeding it. Great engines if you only have to start them once a day.
For 28 years I had a Ford/Lehman SP 135 diesel engine in my boat. The sound of my engine was music to my ears; I loved it.... The sound of this Lister is music to the owners ears, and mine too!
In the Netherlands i had a boot with a two cilinder Petter, 15 hp, aircooled. Bought the machine for almost nothing, and used it for more than twenty years. Summer and winter and with handstart. Absolutely fantastic machine, never had a problem. Each year fresh oil and air filter and that was it. Good idea to close the decompression valves with that piece of rope.
Had an air cooled version in a lifeboat on a ship i was on. We used to say it was so reliable even the first mate could get it to start.
They don't call them narrow boats for nothing !. So clever, the rope closing the compression release !
wonderful.. Love the canals.
I can't imagine the toughness of the chaps who did that for a lifetime and never missed a day of work.
Well filmed and well done on the "Patented one man auto start string"!
God I love the sound of this engine.
Me too,..it is a wonderful sound.
There's something about those old Lister and Sabb engines that I just adore.
Nice to see the starting handle being used correctly!!!
Just found this video - I grew up with that sound....and what a sound!!!!
Hi,
These are the compression change over valves. They put a chamber into communication with the cyclinders which lowers the compression.
The high compression mode (taps screwed in) is designed just for starting, but is also recommended for low load running. If you are running the engine hard then you can (and best to now and again) open them up. Ensure the threads are oiled, and that the valves are completely opened and later completely shut otherwise you will get blow through. Cheers, Myk
I never get bored of hearing these old engines run in boats, love 2 & 3 cylinders. Just like i love V8's in cars, they sound like a symphony........Beautiful.
THIS IS AMAZING THANKS SO MUCH FOR POSTING; I do a really good impression of this exact model, according to no one
Amazing! Love the smoke and the moving bits! Bootiful.
I had a Lister JP3M - I used string as well to pull the 1st and then 2nd decompressors down and then I would lunge at and knock the 3rd one over myself! It also had the wheels on each cylinder for decreasing compression for starting, before winding out when running. It ran very slowly and had a dry simp and separate oil tank. Lovely old engine.
Reminds me of being at horticultural college and having to start the archaic rotovator which entailed pumping with a hand crank to build up pressure but then opening a small flap on the side somewhere and inserting a paraffin soaked, lit rag to ignite the system. This machine was excellent once started, but being about 100 years old it was a bit of a faff to get started. That being said, once it was going, it was the easiest to use, most manoeuverable machine i ever used. Much better than the modern stuff.
as a ex heavy goods mechanic,l find this film great!!!
Good home made solution...The rope closing the decompressor.
I absolutely love it.History you can feel.
HA! That string idea is pretty slick!
it work though
Very nice to see, starts easily and has a great sound!
It will always be grate fun to listen to these one cylinder work horses.
Two
Just super Heavenly sounds and you never need a starting battery either........ I'm so envious as my boat has a 1.8 BMC ....!!!
great moments, thank you kindly 👊
That’s pretty slick with the comp release. 👍
Lol. That string is clever as hell
Gardner
what does it do, drop the decompression thingy?
Agree. So he can keep cranking. 👍👍
Simply incredible.
Breathtaking.
Thanks so much. On the bucket list.. some canal cruising in GB.
Great old diesel,love the sound
Love that sound
That sounds like a proper narrowboat engine.
beautiful machine.
After standing cold all winter we used to spray ether into the air intake, Saved endless winding, started first time!
Best music video ever
verry nice,,we had a boat in the navy res' years ago,,,a SMB,that had a lister in it,,i dont miss triying to start it,,it took 2 of us on the crank,,thanks for poasting.
That is a nice sound
what a grand beautiful old engine, there are still quite a few running here in the U.S on the eries, great lakes n MISS n MISSOURI rivers and its tributaries.
Cool, thanks for that,
happy cruising!!
were on our way to stratford!!
this is really nice! ive got an lister 2cylinder CE 18 hp in my boat but some times i regret that i didnt put one of these in my boat
Wicked Awesome my friend!
I just love the sound of it idling. Thump............... thump..................thump .................thump. Nice and slow, that’s it, nice and slow.
Great video!
Thats the cooling water, pumped through by the reciprical pump on the other side of the engine. The tap (shown in the video) allows manual control over the amount that goes through the engine, thus allow you to keep it at the correct temperature for running (if you know what you are doing!).
Much better watched in HD via the link... sounds even better!
Time was the Listers were ubiquitous here in California. I loved them and even attended LUSP. That's sort of like UCLA but it's actually Lister University San Pedro. We had Lister/Lima auxiliaries and the reason i liked them, aside from No Sea Water Pumps, was that even on a dark and stormy night, when your torch is DOA, you can step up to them in pitch darkness and get them going in no time flat. Then you have your lights on and can proceed to get underway. Unfortunately, it's become the era of the highspeeddiesel, and our faithful Listers or Bukhs can't produce clean enough exhaust anymore. This is from the land of the CARB Cans. Those are the supremely idiotically nozzled jerry cans which cannot do anything but spray paraffin on every square inch of everything within a 10 ft radius. Ah, Progress!
"CARB": California Air Resources Board. Please, don't shoot, I'm only the piano player!
That rope start is the max
Okay... put simply... THAT'S AWESOME!
All diesels sound like their going to come apart when first started cold. Mack truck I drove B-81 with a Thermadyne engine no turbo or blower in minus -40 F was told it wouldn't start had a Ingersoll rand air stater motor and was supplied with shop air so the 7th time I tried it it fired on three cylinders took over 20 minutes before all 6 were firing and everybody said it was going to come apart by the noise. Once it warmed up worked fine. I used ear muffs as the starter had no muffler then spent the next 39 days doing snow removal with the old girl manual steering quadbox ( 4 speed auxiliary with 5 speed main ) nobody wanted to drive the old girl due to the cold but once warmed up and a few rags in holes that were letting hot air out I was comfortable in my t-shirt. One of the other drivers hopped in and wanted to know how I got it so warm in the cab. The major problem with the heat was some idiot piped the hot water from the thermostat housing to the heater after the thermostat instead of before it. I simply shut her down and in five minutes had it piped correctly. Amazing what a little change like that makes in heat output.
Didn't tell them how I had heat for four days. When checking the oil I noticed the piping problem as the same thing happened to me in 1973 on a B-81 dump.
Nice to see old girls like Victoria teaching the new girls the way it was always done. May she cruise another 100 years.
I miss the old days
nice sound reminds me to my ship in the seventies.
I loved the method for disembarking, floor it and let the dock do its work.
But why would you abuse your vessel in this manner? Bare concrete against steel - concrete wins.
Unless, of course, he had dock bumpers we don't see.
The JP2 should last 50 years between overhauls .
A historic sound.
Very nice !
I had a JP4 in a 48ft. fishing trawler. I never ever thought about the string on the decompreesion lever. Most of the JP series engines in Australia were shipped to Singapore as they were reliable and easy to service. The later air-cooled versions were quite noisy and leaked a lot of oil.
Fortunate to have lived in an age on this planet when these types of motor's were used all the time, what a beautiful sound, you can almost feel like power!!! Arthur Dunn Australia 🇦🇺
LOVE it!
very nice !
beautiful
Oh my this sounds like old GE FDL toaster u boats! Nostalgia
lister engine harmoniusly melodius .
LOL the string is smart and funny
That had to be a hot start to be that easy
See czcams.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=oWdzi-KsV40 for a cold start. It does take longer when the temp is below 10 degrees C, as I use SAE30 and don't use a thinner oil during winter, but so long as I'm turning the engine fast enough it fires first time.
estupendo motor su ruido es fantastico escucharlo.......
Lovely...!!
Sweet!
Nice Lister Marine engine. They put compression valves on the Lister CS types.
Hope it’s still running strong 👍🏽
I'd need to know more about the engine, best measure is swept volume and max RPM and reduction box ratio. The JP2 is just under 3 litres, and 1200 RPM. The gearbox is a 2:1 giving a shaft RPM of 600. The list is 22 BHP, but is obviously equivelent to a much more powerful modern engine.
Like a Swiss Watch.
I just watch it cause I love the sound of it, Sorry for bumping ya pages views up lol
Way cool
@Amazon5923 yeah, you're right,, happy with the CE too.
@porpoisefathom It's 22 bhp at 1200 rpm, but theres loads of torque!
That's a sound you want to drink.
Oh Yes!
Seems quite a lot to do before you actually get the the engine to start. & then this & that before you set off. 😮. Seems like a lot of messing about with the the engine setup first. But, as others have mentioned it is a very reliable engine & it does sound nice aswell! I thought it was just a matter of turning a key 😀(like most engines) seems not with this one. Shows how much I know about them LOL!!!
Hi Great vid!
what are them taps your were turning on at 1:30?
my friend has a JP3 on his boat and always has them screwed in? what do they do?
i have a lister HA2 on my boat
cheers
Why is the starting procedure on these engines so seductive to watch? what would Freud say?
They had to get a pretty good writer to write the owners manual on this thing.
@rightfredsdead it is 2 cylinder, lister is the make
It's too bad that we don't have many old diesels here in the US.
Maybe not the sort you get in petrol engine, but trust me if it doesn't get over TDC it can push backwards!
Yes sorry JP 2 > We use to use the Single cylinder in Zimbawe ( Africa ) for pumping water for the cattle .
great video ,at 1.17 on the video ,wheres the water coming from
😁👍👏👏👏
is that engine the same size as a lister cs 12/2,
That sounds lovely. Do you know what the cylinder displacement is?
2 x 1500cm3
It's a twin mate.
No need to alter both cylinder compressions at the same time. - One at a time would at least leave one fully functional cylinder.
Give me a nice even firing 3 cylinder.
If you need starting fluid do you use Listerine?
Listers are known to have the lowest idle capabilities
Checked the valve tappet clearance lately?
It’s such a slow running engine with a fair amount of slack in it anyway. I just make sure there is a little rock on them when not activated.
Hi please tell me where you can buy such an engine and how much will it cost?
Алексей Солодовник you can not buy those engines anymore. It are collector items
were any of these made with an air start option, or was that the Gardeners?
Airstart was available for JPs, as well as Dynostart.
how many cylinder?
Remember the sound from when I was a lad coal boating l&l Burnley Alan ex owner of l&l tug anna
@foreverthewho
why the regret engine power about the same--l have 3!
You make it look so dramatic with all the camera views
