Your review influenced my purchase yesterday and we played it tonight - me, my son, and two of his friends at his New Years sleepover. Had a blast. Easy enough to learn the rules and teach 13 year olds in few hours. Such fun watching them work together and scheme to fight off the demonic hordes. And they won! By the skin of their teeth (and maybe me giving them a few freebies). But they won and were ecstatic. I can see this being played a lot more In the future. Really good game. Well balanced and a ton of fun.

You gave me Frostgrave Bite! I have a set of townhouses coming from Tabletop World in Croatia. It's going to be really something special in three or four months when Massive Darkness lands and I got all my building terrain painted up to play some epic Frostgrave gameplay. Question for you, Joel. I play miniature games pretty much solo (Shadows of Brimstone, Fortune and Glory, etc.) Do you think this game would be fun and manageable to control both sides and play solo or would it not work so well?

  • @woltergeist9175

I made this game into a euro style shooter by introducing the following house rules:
Players play with the top card of their decks revealed (face up)
When a defending player uses a card for defense it goes to the hand of that player after which this player discards a card of choice
Activation order is revealed at the start of the rond
Whenever a figure is stunned it activates last during a round

Thanks for the review. I understand you enjoy this iteration of Doom vs Descent or Imperial assault, how would you rack and stack this against Conan?

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  Před 7 lety +2

I give this one the bump because of the configurability and versatility. It's built to have multiple decks and builds thrown at each of the scenarios. Conan is hard fixed, "Play this scenario using X, Y, and Z." The Conan system is awesome... very innovative. But, this feels much more robust.

Quick question - how does it work with different player counts? Do there have to always be four marines out?
As in, in a four player game does one player have to control two marines and other two marine players control one each? Or can you simply add number of marines = number of marine players?
    Thanks again!

May I have a few questions for you, as I am not able to find it anywhere....
      1. New round, action phase. Demons first. Demon attacks marine. Marine used ARMOR in defense. When this particular marine starts his round, does he pick a new card to his max hand, or does he start with -1, because he used ARMOR during the defense?
      2. Grenade. Today we first used grenade. There were 4 demons in vicinity. Does every single demon picks a defense card agains the grenade, or is this particular "attack" without defense?
      3. Mancubus´ flamethrower. Similar as point 2. Does the marine picks the defense card against flamethrower, or not?
      4. Marine´s assault rifle magnum shot. This bugs me a lot. This is a reaction card. Is this reaction card played before the demon´s attack (meaning demon throwing dice to attack)? I am not sure if this is like "overwatch" function from XCOM PC game. Situation: Demon has a low health and marine has a low health. Any attack would kill either of them. It´s demon´s turn. Demon attack marine, and he uses the magnum shot. Who dies first (lets say that dices would show max hits)? Who´s attack happens first?
I would be forever in your debt if you can help me with those questions. Cheers!

One question I have in the game that has to do with the marines, I understand you start with 10 cards (4 standard, 2 sets of 3 for weapons). With using 1 main action card and using as many bonus cards as you want, wouldnt you run out of action cards quick considering every turn you refresh your hand to have 3 cards?

  • @jamesc.7988

Hey Joel, I am taking a really hard look at this game and thinking about pulling the trigger on a purchase. What scale are the minis? I know 28mm is the old standard with some companies promoting 32mm as "Heroic Scale" but the newest trend seems to be pushing 40mm on tabletop skirmish games. I'm really hoping for the latter in the Doom game so I can use the miniatures in my 40mm Savage Rifts rpg but if the Doom minis are 28mm, do you think they would still work on a table with 40mm humans? How tall is the Baron of Hell miniature; he is one of the main villains in my campaign so it would be nice to drop him on the table. And apologies for my being all over the place here. I'm running on very little sleep and still working on my first cup of coffee.

    cool review! also,
"Revenants are monsters introduced in Doom II
that are easily recognized by their high-pitched shriek. They take the
form of very tall animated skeletons in metallic silver body armor
equipped with shoulder-mounted missile launchers, and blood and gore
running down their ribcage and legs. Their running movements are a
herky-jerky approach akin to a stringed puppet.
According to the manual: Apparently when a demon dies, they
pick him up, dust him off, wire him some combat gear, and send him back
into battle. No rest for the wicked, eh? You wish your missiles did what
    his can do."
