    In a weird way your video actually made me more excited to get the game. I'm also a big fan of deckbuilding games, but a lot of them can be very complex, and I do own those, sometimes it's really nice to have a simplistic version. Like you said pokémon is at it's core a really simple game (there are ofcourse online rules to make them harder). I also totally agree with the story feedback here. One thing I noticed though is they did announce there are rules around resealing new random packs of cards, there are some carton containers included in the game for you to do that, so I must say I don't really agree on the "only works once" feedback, although the feeling of ripping open a plastic sealed pack can't ofcourse be beaten by a carton pack.

      I support this opinion. I like dragons, I like deckbuilding games and this game looks really cool. Not too complex, but not too simple either. And painting those cool miniatures will be awesome.
      In the end, a review is a biased personolized opinion and people should use these videos with a grain of salt.
      For example people love Azule and Wingspan and I thought I would too because these games have mostly positive reviews.
      Who would know that these would be my two most hated games ...

    I've played it and it was fun. I agree with some of your concerns (it's light deckbuilding, but adding map elevates it above many others for me) and had some of my own, but still it was second best AR game I have played (lost only to STALKER). It's still on an early stage and I hope they will make it more meaty (and more challenging, my demo was really easy), but so far I'm really interested. And, without spoilers, story got much better and bigger later on. Not ATO or even TG level, but I was really interested what will happen next.

    Just watching OSCS's playthrough. It sounds like NOTHING they showed in the previous video and nothing like your assessment of it (which was based on their playthrough).
    The combat options were generally lite but they are much more than Move and Attack. Gave some nice decision space on which card/position to select and what to spend your energy on.

    I wasn't sure how fun the moving and attacking would be.. but then you mentioned attacking AND moving and oh man I'm sold!
    all joking aside I think a lot of this could be improved if the elemental types came into play more.. as far as I have seen so far they don't really do anything other than change your special actions. I want to strategically choose my characters based on strengths and weaknesses of the opponent and have reasons to use some creatures over others. I know pokemon didn't have much of a story but I hope this one delivers a bit more. The game does look light and repetative, but could be fun to play with nephews if the story is engaging enough to make up for the lightness. I don't see any reason to get minis for this one as I predict they will be barely used. The base pledge is a reasonable price at least

      @@Ironhawx AR has some problems with their games, but at least they sell them with the option of less minis (or sometines meeples) for cheaper if you are not interested. CMON only sells plastic. They take 0 risk doing something interesting in contrast with AR too. One or two zombiecides a year and some other dice chuckers with more plastic than ideas. I understand your concerns, but I don't entirely share them. To be fair, I also don't agree with you on Marvel United, or not completely. I love the game and enjoy the over production, and it hits the table far more than many other games because it is so light and quick. Just fits our lifestyle more. Even 1hr games can be hard for me to table on a weeknight, so while I love bigger and heavier games as well, they just don't see the table time something like MU does.

    Ok so I think the issue is your expecting a Deck Building game, but what Dragon Eclipse is going to be is a Story Based Deck Building Game. Based on vids they have up, the Deck Building aspect is going to be like the one they have in Etherfeilds. Were while slowly going through the story, you can replace many cards in your deck, and eventually have synergy's between cards. Personally I like this, because, those Deck Building Synergies later in Etherfeilds were so fun, problem was those in the beginning were meh. People still think Etherfeilds has light deck building because they only experienced the beginning aspects of the game. I feel like the prototype of Dragon Eclipse is showing only the minimal of what we will eventually get in the game.

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  Před rokem +2

      Ah man see I found Etherfields deckbuilding lackluster too and couldn't get into it so never saw further. Sadly I can't get behind a board game taking up many people's time just for the "it gets good in season 2" approach :/

    • @Zomerdromen
      @Zomerdromen Před 11 měsíci +1

      I agree with Cheddahslammer and think again the "it gets better in season 2" approach depends on what you came for. I loved the wonder and exploration and surprises and puzzles in Etherfields. The deck building was not really a part of the appeal for me. I do like that, but I have never thought of Etherfields as a deck builder, but rather as a narrative adventure game that uses some deck building elements (although that definitely grew to be a larger part of the game further in). I feel similarly about Dragon Eclipse: if you're looking for a deck builder, this is probably not your jam. If you're looking for an adventure with narrative choice and some deck building elements, then it's exactly right. Of course we'll have to see where things go once the campaign starts, but I feel the disappointment (while sad and surely fair and true from your perspective) has more to do with expectations and preferences than the actual game. I tend to be disappointed too when campaign games turn out to be just scenarios with three lines of text in between instead of an actual story. Doesn't make the game bad; it's just that I was expecting or hoping for something else because of my personal preferences 🙂

    Their deliberate bad estimates on project timelines is reason enough for me to skip ANY of Awaken Realms projects. I got burnt so many times with the company, that they cannot tell me, it is all just because if unforseen circumstances. Especially as a LANG backer they could easily start with translation a lot earlier and use AI as a rough starting point for translation. So either they present an almost finished game with only slight adjustments to be made, or I wait for a potential retail purchase. One company switching to this model is - by the way - Awaken Realms Lite. They just posted this approach in their latest update for Tamashii.

    • @CheddahSlammer
      @CheddahSlammer Před rokem +1

      The problem with LANG, is you have to deal with separate companies that translate the text. This was the issue Awaken Realms had with Etherfields. The other company they were dealing with to translate, had a backlog and wanted to finish all other translations they had to do.
      You also have the problem were if you rush it you get the game translated badly. While not needing LANG, I had an issue were the game company was French, and they had to translate everything into English. The company did the translation at the same time as the rule book was being made. Lets just say the translation made the game unplayable, and then they tried to sell a revised better translated rule book 6 months down the line. So they basically rushed it, and then did an accurate translation later to get more $.
      Personally I just feel the opposite, I feel like that while Awaken Realms has great delay with their games, their game are worth the wait. Instead of them rushing that time to get the game out, having things wrong and needing a upgrade kit or new rule book. Ive had several games now that haven't even delivered Wave 2 of their product and are trying to sell upgrade kits and fixes for Wave 1, when that should already be done. On the other hand when Awaken Realms needed a fix for their rule book, and certain components, they gave it to backers for free with Wave 2.

      They did polish Etherfields after wave 1. Every backer got a new rulebook and some extra gameplay elements during wave 2.

      ... what? Literally all of their games are well loved by most people lol you may not like them yourself but don't act like they're "doing a disservice to the community" ...

    That damn hobby is too expensive to back something just out of interest without getting in , even with big name behind it.

    I watched it as well, and was completely bored with the gameplay. So far disappointed with it and hoping they will do some changes to make it better.

    I should point out the very strong possibility that Awaken Realms is using AI art generation in this game. Many of the attack cards feature abstract landscapes and almost random elements that do not fit the card's name and do not have the creature in them (would require actually taking the time to draw that instead of hitting "generate" in Dall-E or Midjourney). They look very similar to common AI art designed work (albeit touched up for consistency). AR has used AI art before in their promo for the STALKER board game. They have not answered as to their policy on AI art over the course of the campaign and with 2 days to go, I feel like they'd prefer to run down the clock. If this is all true, please do not support this.

      Whether it’s AI or not it’s clear it’s just… bad. The mini sculpting seems well done, the main character art mostly is too, but the rest of it is hot garbage.

    This might be the first AR game I will actually skip. Not interested at all at this point. Really unfortunate.

    You kind of lost me when you criticized the gameplay loop in a purposefully reductive way. Around 8min in you say “pretty much all this is, is read stuff, manipulate cards, see if you succeed.” To be honest, that’s the description of most games. To assert that as a critique here seems odd to me. It’s obviously fine if you don’t like it, and several of your takes here just are lost on me.

      No worries, a variety of opinions is a great thing! I agree that was poorly worded :)
