Dan, you are worth listening to, my lawn was really spongy last year and when cutting the lawn it was ripping the grass out even though the mower was set on a higher setting than normal. After watching your videos I realised it was all down to the thatch and it had been growing underneath the lovely green surface growth, when I peeled back the grass there was loads of thatch. I followed your videos and cut the lawn short, then raked/scarified, then put some top dressing on with seed and it's much better so far, still got a long way to go, your video's are very educational.

Last day of primary school and our teacher knew QPR were using the local sunday league team's pitch (Watts Blake Bearne in Kingsteignton Devon) for their prep before a pre-season match with one of the local sides - probably Torquay, Exeter or Argyle. Think Peter Crouch was there too. Nice bunch of blokes. Still got the signed school shirt somewhere!

Dan. I experimented two years ago and used fescues and bents on front lawn and 40% dwarf rye with creeping red fescue, chewings fescue, strong creeping red fescue and a small amount of bents on the back.
    Yes front lawn..very hard work.
Weed grasses also showed up in the front which made it look worse than the back.
I am gradually converting the front to match the back so mixed ⅓ of grass seed I used on the front with ⅔ of seed from back to overseed a few days ago.
Next year I will sow the same as the back.
Probably done everything wrongly but we shall see..I will share results when it becomes little established.

    Hi Dan.
I have just top dressed a really wet boggy lawn.
We had the ground levelled last spring and turfed shortly afterwards.
The lawn did well for the summer and autumn but suffered really badly from compaction over the winter resulting in bare ground and waterlogging in the shady area of the lawn.
This week i have aerated with a core aerater by hand, taking out 25mm holes down to 4" and also hand scarified and removed a lot of thatch.
Today i have set up the cement mixer put in 50 ltrs of compost to 25 litres of top soil and pre mixed the seed into the mixture.
The ground had settled badly in some areas so there were a lot of low spots.
I have levelled it all off, some areas to a depth of 25mm in depth.
Any pointers going forward or things which i may have done which might not help the lawn to regenerate.
I have used A1 lawn seed.
I am keen to establish the ground in this second year and hopefully have a more flat and stable standing for the lawn which i can then start working on properly.
    Love the videos.

Hi Daniel thoroughly enjoyed the video as always, very informative and entertaining. Did I get you right, should I hold off putting any fertilizer down when overseeding until the new seedlings are coming through? Cheers

Do you have to keep on water in the lawn for the grass seed to grow through. Or do you just leave it at this time of year👍

My issue is that most of the videos i see on You Tube are on tiny lawns like this one. Mine isn’t massive but is 4 times the size of this one. I just can’t afford the products (seed, feed, top soil/sand etc) to do my lawn!

I’ve noticed you seem to use individual bags of field 5. Is there a reason you do this and not get a dumpy bag? We have 100sqm to cover on a bumpy lawn.

Ah we had a massive infestation of leatherjackets this winter. They were killing my new lawn and controlled them by applying two rounds of nematodes and now they are all pretty much dead! Not cheap but better than losing the whole lawn.

I’m about to start my own lawn renovation based on watching most of your back catalogue. What is the difference in using topsoil and field compost number 4? I’m hoping the soil will fill in a few lumps

    • @boyasaka
      @boyasaka Před 3 měsíci

      Number 4 is compost
      Number 5 top soil
Use soil to level and fill in holes .
Use compost to top dress your seeds

Lovely Lawn. I destroyed my lawn last year. Won’t tell you what l did. Anyway it’s now full of all kinds of weeds and moss (80% weeds now) is it too late for me to try and fix it? I’m on a low budget and live on the east coast, My garden is mainly a shaded English country garden. Can l put down a weed and moss killer or is it too late to renovate?. I have pets that are always on the grass what can l do? Thanks.

    Hello!
    Please help!
After applying sand top dressing (half m3 /100m2) and smoothing it with a leveling rake, I noticed that no matter how I try to level the area, there remain tender, thin and weak horizontally lying blades of grass under the sand. Should I worry about them, or will they come out after a few days? They emerge as a result of a water jet (or water sprayed from half a meter away), but this slightly erodes the effect of leveling because it re-excavates the area filled with sand between the larger clumps of old grass, and can also displace upturned seeds and fertilizer particles. So far, I have applied only half of the planned amount of top dressing, I don't dare to spread more, I would like to wait until the grass grows a little (I cut it into short pieces before aerating the lawn). At the same time, I don't think I can wait too long, because I sowed fast-germinating seeds, and once the new grass comes, it shouldn't be necessary to loosen the soil. What do you advise?

Do you have any advice on preventing the bleached patches we get from our dog wee please? Is there a particular treatment or grass type that withstands this?
    Thanks in advance.

I did renovate last year but didn’t put any week killers down. Now grass is full again. Before l start to renovate again can l use a weed moss killer or something as spending all that money and just end up with weeds again

You can buy a liquid moss remover or use a fertiliser with iron sulphate in
He uses a commercial weed killer which is a once a year application it is bloody good but expensive …. No comparison to the crsp weed n feed in shops

Really great video! I need to get a seed slotter but my shed is packedd to the ceiling lol.
I'm making a lawn right now. it's about 55-60% rootzone sand and the rest is mostly dark fenland silt. Is that a good texture for grass to grow in?
I purchased sand and silt separatly as thats all i could get delivered ewithout having a stack of pallets i can't get rid off. It's interesting to see their pure state but mixing it with a rake for 10 hours straight for 4 days is not fun.

@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert Ahh good idea.. It will be too late to change it by then but I can get a goot idea if root depth etc. Also it could be a fun test to see how it grows in pure silt. I'm finishing the last third (2 inches) in about a week and may increase the sand a little bit as surface drainage will allow the water to go down to the roots a little better. I'm not sure if thats a good idea of just stick to water I have been doing.
