- Emmanuel talks about his experience joining the military, as well as, his experience coming home from war. The stories of so many veterans demand our attention. Our veterans deserve better.
Emmanuel Bernadin served his country from July 2007- July 2013 as an enlisted member of the United States Navy. His tours of duty included embedded deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Emmanuel is currently employed at Lockheed Martin as a Software Engineer where he supports the F-35 Lightning II program and is continuously afforded opportunities to speak on veterans issues and represent the veteran community.
Some of Emmanuel’s most honorable mentions and awards include being featured in “When War Comes Home” a documentary film portraying some of the challenges veterans face after returning home from war. He has been awarded 2 Army Commendation Medals and a Meritorious Unit Service Medal . Emmanuel’s favorite words to live by are “Because Emmanuel Lives I Expect Victory Everyday!”

In several countries you have multiple advantages in serving in the army , navy or air force ; you can join police force , you have help to study , some skills learned while serving help get specific jobs ; the real problem in USA is the lack of help after returning in civil life ; there should be a program for vétérans to help cope up with change .
when did he say bring back the draft? it sounded like he said we needed to fix the problems we have with veterans so we don't have to go back to the draft...

Flash357 Why? Anyone drafted probably doesn't want to be there, otherwise they would've volunteered. This could hurt morale and make a war harder to wage since you have soldiers who don't want to fight.

besides if a country gets out of line and uses these weapons, every other country would go after them and keep the peace
The title is very misleading, Mr. Bernadin said we need to fix the problems our Veterans face, unemployment and the high suicide rate, so we *don't* have to bring the draft back.
bringing back the draft or making military service mandatory could get those who will be in this system more active in ensuring there will be programs to support said members. most people wont do shit unless it affects them personally. that's all he is saying. sadly, it's true.
Too many americans are like that with every problem facing our country for the most part. "If it doesn't directly effect me or my family, I don't care". That is the biggest problem, and capitalism thrives due to this type of thinking.
rdizzy1 it's funny how people comment on capitalism but don't understand it truly in the context of a society without government collusion. America is corporatist, not free market capitalist. Also, why does everyone have to care about everyone else's problems? It simply can't happen. We can have compassion toward them and help if we can, but making it compulsory is insanity and it's what government purports to do. Socialist thought is flawed because that type of system is simply illogical and unattainable, all you have to look at is history.

thomas scott what’s the difference between combat veterans and non combat veterans? There’s a word in common. Figure that out yourself. I’ll make the spot on assumption and assume that you’ve never served. So go ahead and bash between the two. If you serve, you serve. If you don’t, don’t speak on the difference between the two.
All of us need help sooner or later. I'm a disabled combat veteran. We need to save the 22 vets a day because these are the some of the best people we have in humanity and we are letting them die. This must stop.

Young Man, you are an inspiration. Thank you for your service and the sacrifice that you have made on behalf of me and my family. It is absolute travesty how the men and women of the United State Military are treated when they have fulfilled their duties as members of the military. The healthcare system that is in place for our veterans is broken and almost unrepairable. We as citizens need to stand together and defend our veterans like they have defended us. Write, call and confront your members of congress and demand that they do what needs to be done to take care of our veterans. It is my personal belief that our veterans should have access to healthcare that is at least equal to or better than the healthcare that our members of congress enjoy.
I live in Australia. I served in the Australian Army for 18 years and was deployed to Bougainville, East Timor twice, Iraq and Afghanistan.
When my father served it was Korea and Vietnam. He remembers what we had which was National Service. Two years of mandatory military service from the 1950's til the 1970's. The government here still integrated conscription. My father like his Dad for WWII volunteered and so did I when I became 18. Here, no one says thank you for your service. As a volunteer military for civilians it is perceived as "a job" the rest of our populations are not really "involved" in the wars we deployed to, not like Vietnam where anyone who was of age could be called up so people took notice of the war. Not like Korea where both our countries had a belief that communism was at our doors. Certainly not like WWII or WWI where nearly every family was affected. When we come back, we come back to a very alienated society to what we experienced, they're not as involved as the last generations so it is hard for our societies to get a good understanding on what it means to serve in our forces. They have the internet, CZcams, the news even movies to some degree but for the many it doesn't affect their normal daily lives. I would imagine that it would be hard to play on anyone's "heart strings" about the plight of our veterans after service unless they have had some involvement. Australia does not have a G.I bill that our service members could use after service, we have the same issues with employment, our wounded Vets and of course suicide rates. We do have a lot of Veteran groups who by donations try to help and a Department of Veterans Affairs so by looking at it on paper we as Veterans should have all the help we need to get back on our feet after service but it's our society that we believed we were defending that not necessarily doesn't care but more so doesn't really expect us reintegrate and be "welcomed" back properly. Welcome home parades are one thing but after the streamers and flag waving have stopped what happens after? There is a massive divide between the world of military service and the civilian world almost to the point of cultural incompetence and this is where I feel is the problem. There are incentives after service but very little reward. We as Veterans need to understand that just because we served it doesn't make us any better or even more patriotic than our fellow civilians and civilians need to understand what it's really like to serve a country, what our work ethics and potentials could be. It can't simply be Vets helping Vets anymore. We can do that but it should also be civilians accepting Vets back. We really don't want hand outs or sympathy, just a chance to prove ourselves just a valued part of society as when we served😌

Why should you be celebrated when you join up to go fight in a war which never affected your home country. Oh boo hoo, you volunteered to go """"peacekeeping"""" in nations that didn't want you there, then expect a free ride when you get home?
It's a shame that we don't have some sort of reward for the men and women who serve in our armed forces. The ancient Romans, who existed thousands of years ago had a system who awarded their soldiers. For auxillary soldiers (soldiers from other communities who fought for the Romans) they had an idea like this. If an auxillary soldiers served for twenty five years for the Romans, then they were granted a plot of land and Roman citizenship for them and each generation after them. It's not the perfect option for a modern day society, but it's a shame that the Romans can figure something out when we can't.

Ian Calandro, I've always said if a non citizen serves in the U.S military he should be offered citizenship without going through the naturalization process.
There are a lot of immigrants serving in our military and I believe that is an extremely honorable thing to do.
The problem with the roman military was that they had more loyalty to their generals than to Rome itself. They had to constantly conquer new land to give to their soldiers who fought for so long. That inevitably destabilized the empire. We can not forcefully recruit people but we must craft a stronger national pride and duty to the younger generation to make them serve.
I'm in the Navy and i actually feel like veterans get many benefits. The GI bill will all but completely pay for 4 years of college. In my opinion the military is a great way to get a good start in life.

Thankyou for your service. Great talk. My husband is a Vietnam War Veteran. He was spit on, called names and disrespected anytime he was in public in uniform. Never a thankyou until Desert Storm. Thanks for your message. I hope many more Americans hear your message and something is done to help vets. We have a friend that is one of those suicide statistics.

The draft is something I've spent quite some time thinking about recently, especially in the "age of entitlement". I haven't served but I have great respect for those who have. Thank you.

I mean he didn't even really say what was in the title of the video, he just said he wants the government to actually make things better for veterans so they don't have to use the draft for soldiers. But yes, HR 1509 does open the ability to draft citizens into the military after a declaration of war,or the use of military force, including women. This essentially, for us, means pretty much any time.

He never directly calls for a return for the draft, but highlights the value of service for the individual and emphasizes its importance for the community. I wonder if he didn't submit the title and abstract months before, and in polishing his speech decided that he wasn't sure the pitfalls of a draft were a price worth paying... Like a lot of US veterans now, I feel the emotional pull of wanting a shared social burden while at the same time can't imagine dealing with conscripts for an expeditionary force... I feel your conflict, sir. Thank you for your service...

I am not gungho about militarism or fighting, or the idea of nations, but what I love about this person is that his heart and intentions are directed towards compassion and empathy. And though he found himself in a military environment by life circumstances and his pov, he still maintains those root directives. I wish him happiness and peace. I'm sitting hear thinking I'm usually anti war,but usually the qualities I see in veterans are the qualities I want for myself as a human being like disipline - I'm not down for shooting people,but I do like the experience that can be gained from such an experience as going to war/joining the army and I respect it.
Justin Whu Then become a medic or logistics officer. You can say it is a part of your religion that you can't fight and they won't put you in combat.
No military person is pro-war, but the focus is to preserve the lives of the soldiers to your left and your right. The unfortunate side effect is, someone on the other side will probably have to die.
But, bigger picture, yes, you're right -- it's the unit cohesion, the focus on actions and abilities rather than inherited status, the idea that "we" is bigger than "me"... those are the qualities that would help any group of people. It doesn't matter whether you're flipping burgers or pushing a computer mouse. When you know that the guy next to you has your back, whether it's a new situation on the job, or you need help to move to a new house, or you're having trouble in your marriage, it takes a lot of stress off and helps everyone to be better.
There are many non combative positions in the military you can Persue and perhaps you should.
You must however be prepared to kill another human being if you join the service. That’s just the reality of it. It’s the main reason I never joined.

i volunteered for the Army during the draft during Viet Nam. I served with draftees. The experience we all had made us appreciate the worth of every person. The way the people we were protecting treated the returning men and women from countries who would kill us was the beginning of the decline of civility.
Today we have a disconnect between the elite in politics and the media and those who protect us. A universal service could help the whole country. I agree we should give every one this great experience.

I feel like if more of the populous knew the life of the military more would be done to fix the problems. When children are taught to idolize people for there position and not there actions it is wrong. I agree with much of what you have said. I am a disabled Army OIF vet who has 27 months of combat service. There is also a great divide in Vet to Active status. The current system seems to punish those who are in need and have to get help. I am also saddened by the people who try and associate Military personal to murderers. Those in service do not act or choose a selfish manner in which they serve.. We are only doing what we feel is best for our future generations.
I hear you Ben and it's a very good point you're making. I do my part here in Canada by learning and educating myself and I study and read books written by service members who have written their stories down in books, so that I am able to talk intelligently when people defame and calumniate these brave men and women.

I never said that the draft "needs" to be brought back, I simply wanted to make clear of how "we" as a society fail to remain current/concerned about the -1% who do go out to answer and defend our nation's call. As you saw i brought my only daughter up on stage. i would never in my heart wish or want for her to serve or be drafted. i believe i sacrificed enough of my own personal life on the behalf of my country for the legacy and security of our great country. Thank you for spreading your message. Civi's don't get it, they don't get the security people like us afford them. Whether it is resources or actual political power. They don't get it. And never will. You had a good message brother. Keep spreading it.
As a "Civi" I do not want nor did I ever ask that my "resources" or "political power" be taken with blood. And in truth I do not feel safer with the US military terrorizing the rest of the world that does not give us their recourses or submit to our political power.
I do not belief that Vets are treated respectfully and if they need help I am absolutely willing to support them. The suicide rate of US soldiers is absurdly high and horrifying!

f mck Because a dictator who had constantly used chemical weapons and other horrific methods to control his people is someone we want in power. Either way terrorism was on the rise in Iraq ever since we ruined their infrastructure during the Gulf War and would have resulted in a total takeover had we not installed the democracy. I'd much rather have a nice democracy gaining power than a toss up between terrorists and a dictator with no regards for the U.N. And Afghanistan was literally run by a terrorist organization that broke away from our allied rebels in Afghanistan. And look how well that turned out for them when we gave a blind eye to authoritarian extremists.
Brian Rothrock If putting in democracies that are friendly is a terroristic strategy then I guess moral democracy isn't real. Every democracy should feel an obligation to help others whenever it works. And making Iraq and Afghanistan friendly only furthered peace in the region compared to what would have happened. We could have Chamberlaine'd it but I really doubt ignorance to the problem would have let us have "peace in our time". ;-)

I agree that we need to fix the system that's supposed to be helping veterans, but today's soldiers are not fighting to protect America.
Mind blown you’re absolutely right. They are not fighting to protect Americans but are fighting for the greed of the American politics. That being said these men and women serving their military have no say of where they go to fight. They are simply following orders. Sure they may volunteer to be deployed but many do it to protect their fellow soldiers. There is a sense of brotherhood and a bond that is created when you join the military. The speaker is correct. We need to address the issue with the veterans. If we don’t our children could be fighting a war they didn’t volunteer for.

this young man is great. Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars were/ screwed over by a back door draft. in Vietnam you did your tour went home. that was because there was a draft and there was another body to take your place. my friend who was a medic says remember every time you're in combat you risk your chances of PTSD and death. God bless this young man. a draft would definitely get people more engaged in there government and what the idiots are doing.

The day when the local lord mustered his peasants with their hunting spears, to be sent off into some war to fight and die in droves, is long gone. The military is now increasingly technical, and the cost to train, pay, house, and equip a trooper is so high, you really have to be selective in your recruiting. And then there is the attitude of draftees. I would rather have a blank file on my flank than someone nursing a conscript syndrome.

I say this because I love you all. Soldiers need to admit to themselves, like many have, that their service is essentially for the expansion of Global Monopolies. Monopolies that openly state they do this, with best intentions for the human race. It is not about "protecting" or "defending" "your" country, or "people". Let us be very Clear on this. A competition amongst countries will only lead to problems upon problems, death upon death.

Do you know why the British Army salutes with it's Pam show, and it's nothing to do with being conquered It's a practical thing that dates from 16th to 17th century or somewhere around there. It was to show you had nothing in your hands as most of the British army were recruiting or press-ganging the worst in society of those days but made excellent soldiers as they could deal with hardships better than most also the discipline in those days was legendary tough. The reason the Royal Navy salutes without showing its hands is as it was rude to show dirty hands to a Officer and a Gentleman especially for a Jack-Tar.

I don't think draftees should be forced to go to war, but everyone should have to do some training and then some social work. It would save my generation and drastically lower the obesity rate.
MrJaaaaake In Austria we do have the draft. We are able to choose between the army and social service and we are paid for it. We are but neutral so it isn't the same thing like it would be for an Austrian really. In the army we guard buildings, help people in need or patrole at the border due to the refugee crisis. I haven't even watched video, went to comment that I would never fight for Bankers or politicians especially on foreign land. A true Soldier fights for his land and his land only. Our freedom isn't at risk so you can cut out the Fighting For Freedom talk. Now if you join the military for financial stability, then that makes you a mercenary.
What about people who are already facing personal hardships like heartbreaks and rejections like myself? I don't want to die in the war because I never had a gf, nor a house of my own, nor a college degree yet.

So very AWESOME he's 100% right! I'm a Army brat my wonderful Dad was a twice wounded combat soldier 2 purple hearts 2 silver stars and numerous other metals. I loved and was so very proud to be an American (USA) from a very early age. I know from living overseas in many other countries how crucial it is to honor the brave soldiers. This soldier is a shining example of why we need a draft so others will understand the Tremendous sacrifice of generations before them.
No bodies would be taken in green hamvees with red crosses if people stopped being animals and started living as human beings, loving and respecting each other.

I am an almost devout pacifist, and refuse to harm another person unless it would ensure the direct safety of a loved one
I would take a prison sentence over being conscripted
If my freedom is going to be stripped from me, then it will be on MY terms, and in a way that no one else will get hurt
I'm also worried about my favorite music artists being drafted if it happens.
