  • Ep.58 Auschwitz is not a tourist attraction, but it is an important place to visit. Some of what we saw on our tour will be etched into our hearts and minds forever. The horrors that occurred in this camp are more real to us now. Although this may be a hard video to watch, we tried to be respectful of all those who lost their lives here. ❤️ • Inside AUSCHWITZ Tour:...

      We can't understand it, either. Hate and a desire for power, but I can't fathom the depths of those. And you are right about fear. I'm sure many people didn't stand up to hate because they were focused on self or family preservation. I'm just humbled that there were so many people who risked their own lives to protect others. Thank you both for this film. I was crying so much on my visit in March that I hardly got my camera out. Personally I’m so glad that I made my pilgrimage late in my 3 month stay. As I lost all of my paternal family, excepting my father during Hitler’s reign of terror, the affect on me was startling. It took days for me to recover the joy I had visiting Krakow. I suggest to others, if at all possible, do not visit Auschwitz Birkenau alone. I almost did an independent day trip and at the end of the day I was so glad that I had done a small group tour because I was totally unable to function at the end of the day. Our group leader made sure I got back to my hotel and the hotel was wonderful at looking after me that evening. Again I want to thank you for the sensitive way that you guys crafted this film. I will sit down now with my grandchildren and we will watch this together as a family. Cherie White

      Wow, Cherie, I am so sorry that your father's family were victims of the depravity of WW II. It's heart wrenching to us how much pure evil existed (and how important it is to ensure something similar never, ever happens again). Your suggestion to not visit alone is a good one. I am glad to hear that there were people who looked out for you and took care of you as you processed your emotions. We still are sorting them out. I've continued to do more reading, and we visited Amsterdam's Holocaust monument and Anne Frank's house. It's a lot to absorb, even without having lost family members, so I can't begin to understand how difficult it has been for you. We both are so glad to hear that you think our episode was done sensitively. We weren't sure how to approach it, but we knew it was important for us to pay our respects. Hold your family extra close and know that we are holding you in our hearts as well. ♥️ -Judy

      At 75, I went to Auschwitz with young members of my Polish family in 2009...and I still remember how absolutely lonely and COLD I felt even though surrounded by my loved ones. They, then, and even now will never understand. If you are over 60 , and past members of your family told you facts of what happened........you will have troubled sleep from then on. Even now, long after 2009, I still have sleep problems.( My mum was polish, and in Cestochowa the single under 30`s were the first ones told by the FILTHY kraut, )"Be on tomorrows train to Berlin, or be arrested". Even today I always wish for the WHOLE german nation to have its own FUKUSHIMA, because that`s whats gonna break Japan( for their murderous era) and i hope the FILTHY Kraut gets theirs SOON.

      @@alfredharbas4373 The Nazis were extremists, but Kevin and I are careful not to blame an entire society or country for the sins of their parents (and not all Germans were Nazis or supportive of what Nazis were doing). There's fault enough to go around everywhere because everyone everywhere in the world should have done more. We hope people can learn from the past and choose not to repeat it, including by not allowing people in power to use propaganda and hatred to achieve their objectives of more power and wealth. -Judy

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  Před 7 měsíci +2

      @jaymesnin We have extremists in the US as well who are extremely dangerous. Whenever you have people hungry for power and wealth and mix it with propagandists who want to prey on peoples' fears to get more power and wealth, we need to be very vigilant. What the Nazis did can happen anywhere. I'm not sure them versus us is, but I'd be careful with that because it's not always who you think. We also don't like to generalize because it's often a small but loud group of people who somehow are able to bully, incite fear, or charm people in following their way. -Judy

    Omg, Judy! This was an incredible docu-vlog! The only words that come to mind are a jumble. Heartbreaking. Insane. Powerful reminder of the depravity man can stoop to. Never forget … we’ve already mostly forgotten … in just 70 very short years. Many are already willingly marching toward embracing the same brainwashed evil mentality of that era. Why do we never learn from our past mistakes? Why must we forever repeatedly repeat the mistakes and crimes of the past?

We were a mix of emotions ourselves and we are continuing to process them. Kevin did an incredible job of filming, editing, and picking the perfect music. I tried to do my best to ensure we had enough space for people to feel like they weren't being talked at while still understanding some of what's happening. Soon people who have had first-hand experiences of Auschwitz will be gone, and it was important for us to share our experiences. I don't know that we added anything more than what's already been said about these horrific circumstances, so we are glad that you were moved enough to comment. @shazabdul7114 Hamas had some pretty egregious and horrible human rights violations, so their hands are not clean. And they are an extremist organization. What Israel's government is not a reflection on all Jews, just as all Germans didn't support the actions of the Nazis. We aren't a political channel, so we're not going to speak on what's happening in that war, but we are very careful to not perpetuate antisemitism. The Jews themselves are not the problem (nor are the Palestinians). It's the extremists on both sides that always are the concern. -Judy

       @jackkruese4258 I'm sorry for the deaths of your family members. There are many ways for people to process their feelings, and I would never want to tell someone how they should feel or heal. I do think that there's an unfortunate trickle-down effect that then compound the already horrible deaths. But I was impressed by Eva Mozes Kor, one of the twins that Josef Mengele experimented on. Here's a link to her story: amzn.to/46tXLdV. In her book she talks about personally deciding to forgive Mengele, the Germans, etc. It's not something everyone is capable of, I admit. -Judy

My own mother, two uncles, grandmother and grandfather were placed on a train with the intended destination of Auschwitz; however, as my grandfather was well-off, as a wine maker in Debrecen, Hungary, he paid someone and the train car that they were travelling in was detached and went to Luxumbourg while the rest of the train went on to Auschwitz. My grandfather ended up dying in a bomb that landed on their ghetto. They did not want to deal with the resistance they would encounter if people grasped the situation. They lied about everything. So tragic. -Judy

    Thank you for this video. Freedom is not given forever and history likes to repet. I am Polish and history of my home land is an example of this. There were years when Poland was not on the world map. Our ancestors fought for freedom and honor. Poland is a country with thousands of cementaries and places marked with the blood of people. Let's respect this freedom and respect every human.

      Yes, it's a hard place to visit. Perhaps because of how swiftly our guide moved us along, I was a little disconnected from the experience, which absolutely shocked me. It was more when we were putting together our video that I could allow what I saw to fully digest. And I went on to read several books afterwards that helped to frame the experience even more. We are fortunate to be full-time travelers because a month later we went to Amsterdam and saw Anne Frank's house/annex and took a walking tour that included the Jewish Holocaust Museum there and other areas of the city impacted by the war. It combined to be a very sobering experience. Lots of evil in the world, but there were people who were kind and protected/hid people at their own risk, which gives me hope. -Judy

      Hi Danielle, We booked a tour from Krakow and it took approximately 1.5 hours each way by car. The tour itself, including Auschwitz and Birkenau, was about 4 hours and that included a super fast sack lunch. For both Kevin and I it was a total of €120.00 (around $132), plus around $20 for the meal for both of us. I'm an emotional person as well, but there are a lot of people and the guide moves you through reasonably quickly. I actually was a bit frustrated because I wanted to move a little slower than what the tour allows. In some ways, that helped me to not break down. It was sobering for sure and although it was raining and gloomy, which contributed in a small way, the atmosphere did also feel dark. It took me several days to really feel all the emotions and truly digest everything I saw. It's very surreal. I read several books about Auschwitz immediately afterward and beforehand I spent time touring Krakow and the Jewish Quarter. Those things may have somehow made me feel a little less emotional because of how much I was immersed in it all. You would think it would be the reverse, but maybe in some ways trying to learn more and deep dive made me a little less emotional in the moment.
      It's a hard place and although we try to make sense of it all, there really isn't any. Thanks for watching. We are glad we visited, but it is a hard thing. The one counter to it all is that Poland is beautiful and we had a very nice time there, which I wasn't expecting. There aren't a lot of promotions to visit Poland like there are say, to visit France or Italy. The people in Krakow were lovely and we would return there to explore and learn more. -Judy

      @flolo8036 The US is inches away from getting rid of people who are different. It's starting by taking away all the rights of anyone not holding far-right "values," which includes destroying libraries, gutting education, barring LGTBQ+, people of color, women. There are several countries with dictator leaders, and there have been protests in Germany against an extremist group that is gaining popularity. Putin is killing Ukrainians. And yes, the Israeli government's response to Hamas is completely unacceptable and their PM is completely out of control. And not making any excuses, but what Hamas did was wholly unacceptable and an abuse of human rights as well. The point is to that as people we need to speak up and protest and fight when we see these injustices start to happen, not turn the other way or pretend it won't ever get "that bad." -Judy

      I would appreciate anything you can do to further point out that it was not ordinary German citizens who did this but the Nazis led by a man who was mentally ill.never forget how shocked and horrified the German people were when they were made to go into the camps and see what the Nazis did also don't forget that. The camps were put way out into the. Country near the polish border. Let's keep talking about it if it will prevent it from happening again but I wonder if it's doing that because it is happening now again with all this antisemitism. Jewish people. Have suffered a lot. I will agree with you on that but our leaders need to speak whenever they see injustice and cruelty perpetuated on anyone. Let's put leader in there that are for all people not just one group. I would like to close by saying Germany is trying because if you mention aloud in Germany right now that the Holocaust didn't happen you get an immediate jail sentence

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  Před 4 měsíci

      It's quite tricky, isn't it? We aren't a political channel, so we don't want to get into the business of debating politics. There are a lot of countries right now doing some pretty bad things. There's a lot of hate in the world, and it starts out in small ways. Our leaders need to speak, but so do the people. Hitler couldn't have gotten into power without support from the people and people bought into his lies and propaganda, so there is culpability, even though it's unfair to blame ALL Germans. We're seeing the erosion of democracy in the US and it all starts by slowly taking away the rights of certain people, often under the guise of religion. It's terrifying how easily hate can fester and grow. All I can think to do is to focus on the helpers and the people who offer love and inclusivity versus hate and exclusivity and trying our best to be kind and generous people as often as possible. -Judy

      Hi Sean, thank you so much for watching. It's a very hard video because it's all real, which makes it truly hard to comprehend. I recently read something that there was a lot of effort that went into desensitizing the Nazis so they wouldn't have to become emotionally connected to what they were doing. Lying to the prisoners so that they would be complacent, enticing them with the idea of warm showers so they would go willingly, not having to deal with the bodies after they were killed all helped them to separate themselves from what they were doing. Of course that's the tip of the iceberg. Lots of propaganda to dehumanize Jews as dogs, subhuman, and other terms. Yes, pure evil. And very little accountability for many of the surviving Nazis, who continue to perpetrate their hatred. It's horrible. -Judy

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Germans aren't or shouldn't be judged and that's not what we did in our video. We visited a historic site and shared our experience with thousands of people who might never see it in person as a reminder of what can happen if we aren't vigilant, not to preach but to allow people to see for themselves what happened. Eva Mozes Kor, one of the twins that Mengeles (Angel of Death) experimented on specifically forgave Germans for the atrocities done to her in Auschwitz. She did not want future generations of Germans to bear responsibility for what happened. We have taken great efforts to refer to Nazis versus Germans, but we acknowledge that apathy and a desire for a scapegoat created fertile soil for Hitler to come into power. I don't know that anyone would have imagined that hate could have manifested in the Holocaust, and there was a lot of propaganda to try to keep what was happening hidden from the world and parts of Germany. -Judy

      We disagree. One of the many books we have read on the subject was written by Eva Mozes, who was one of the Mengele twins (her picture with her sister is in Auschwitz) experimented on by Josef Mengele. She made it clear that soldiers at Auschwitz should not be referred to as German soldiers but as Nazi soldiers because not all Germans were Nazis. She also didn't believe in inherited guilt and felt that to impose guilt on German people who were not even alive in WWII, much less involved in the Holocaust, was unfair. Not all Nazis were German and not all Germans were Nazis. That needs to be perfectly clear. Additionally, even the Israel Holocaust museum differentiates in this way.
      I think that if someone who was operated on by the "angel of death" is unwilling to hold all Germans or Germans in general responsible, then we can do to the same. The people involved were Nazis. Thank you for watching. -Judy

      @@FindingGinaMarie I disagree. In fact one reason Japan didn’t even try to invade the mainland US was because our population was armed. Japanese Admiral Yamamoto, “You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.”

      @FindingGinaMarie the music over powers the narration so it's hard to listen to. If the volume of the music was turned down it would be easier to follow the narration

      @@hadtoomany We actually wanted very little narration in this video. We wanted the images and the music to paint its own story, so the narration was designed to be an enhancement and not a primary piece of the story. But you're certainly entitled to your opinion about it. It's a hard video, so thanks for watching. -Judy

    They couldn’t have picked some Wagner to play as the soundtrack to this video…? No, instead we get annoying, whiny violins and violas playing a bunch of somber noise. No melodies in any of this crap.

      The Israeli government is retaliating against Hamas in direct response to the horrible human rights violations they inflicted upon Israel. Bombings are not being done by rank and file Jewish people. We have to be so careful with our words and our understanding of what is happening in that part of the world right now. It becomes a slippery slope towards an entire group of people who have had no part in this conflict who now are yet again incurring antisemitism, and that's very dangerous. We stand for peace for both Jews and Palestinians. -Judy

      We're careful not to use the word, "they." The conflict right now is between the Israeli government and Hamas, an extremist organization. We aren't going to comment on the war because this is not a political channel, but blaming all Jews is as unfair as blaming all Germans. there is no conflict, what is going on is an ethnic cleansing and mass killing of palestinians in Gaza, in other words yes a genocide. jews absolutely should not be blamed for it but israelis and zionists should be blamed. and if you consider what is happening now to palestinians is okay and justified than you areno less evil than them or the Nazis and you should consider be more human and more sensible towards other humans from other ethnoc groups and races not just white jews and white europeans@@FindingGinaMarie

      @FindingGinaMarie your response to the other is clearly a political response and also implies a justification of the terrorist actions commited by israel , and its not political to stand against the genocide of palestinians as they are as human as jews and I cant believe I have to point that out.
