The Passion of the Church: Parallels Between Vatican II and the Passion of Christ

  • Just as the entire history of the Catholic Church seems to be chronologically prefigured by the entire history of Israel in the Old Testament (see Kevin Davis' prior interview with Dominic: • Church History Chronol... ) so too does it appear that the Gospels share in this same economy of chronological parallel and prefigurement!
    In this interview with my guest, Dominic, we discuss the prefigurement of Church history by the Gospel accounts, with a strong focus on the events surrounding Vatican II as foreshadowed by the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord in the Gospels. Pay particular attention to the Resurrection of Christ in the Gospels as a figure of our time now, when the Mystical Body of Christ (The Church) shares in the characteristics of Christ's Risen Body.
    At the end of this podcast there are some bonus topics that could be the focus of future interviews.

    Did you know that a group of ~180 non-Catholics in the fields of art, literature, and general academia signed a petition to Paul VI begging him not to do away with the Latin Mass, because it was an artistic masterpiece? Rather like Pilate's wife, begging him to have nothing to do with that Just Man because she suffered in her dreams on His account.

    Like a Fibonacci sequence, our Lord is the Word of History. His Word, Divine, and, His Body, mystical, is working out Our Father's plans through Christ's mystical body on Earth, His Church.
    We are having to determine
    what is true & what is false.
    Today, we are witnessing the ape of the Church as it saps the life out of the once glorious Roman Catholic Church. But the Word, Our Lord, remains & renews.
    May we be inspired to draw ever closer & also be renewed in His Word and
    in His Mystical Body.
    Thank you, Dominic.
    The connections & interconnections are amazing. There is no end.
    All Glory to God!

    Another thought - Dom, you’ve triggered me!!! LOL!!! I love this stuff!!!! You interpreted some of the post-Resurrection signs, such as the wounds that remained in our Lord’s glorified Body, and His somewhat altered or inscrutable Countenance, as belonging to “the period of Resurrection.” Everything in my gut tells me that we still await the Resurrection of the Church. If so, then how to interpret these scriptural signs? In the Apocalypse, the Lord identifies Himself thus: “I am the First and the Last, and alive, and was dead … behold I am living for ever and ever, and have the keys of death and of hell.” The very same identifying characteristics can be applied to Holy Church: “alive, yet is “dead;” living forever; having the keys of death and hell.” While we await the Resurrection of the Church, these signs give us hope and confidence and the grace to persevere in the trial of our faith. Secondly, if we are still awaiting the Resurrection of the Church, what does Her altered or inscrutable Countenance point to, if not, in the wake of Her infiltration and captivity, our own perplexity and confusion in discerning where She is and where She is not? As you indicated, the Apostles did not recognize the Risen Lord so much with their bodily eyes, as with their interior eyes. They knew Him in their “sensus Catolicus,” which is the only way we can now know the True Church. Only in the breaking of the Bread (valid Sacraments), and in the opening up of the Scriptures (the assiduous study and defense of the Faith), can we recognize the Church and remain in Her. By virtue of Her “invisible society,” the kingdom of Heaven within us, we discern Her, until She rises like the sun, and becomes perceptible to our waking eyes. Thus we may apply this passage from Job to the Church: “For I know that [the Church] liveth … and in my flesh I will see [the Church], whom I myself shall see, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. This, my hope, is laid up in my bosom.”

    • @maccabeanuprising
      @maccabeanuprising Před 7 měsíci +3

      Beautiful and wonderfully written! I especially like your description of how the Apostles recognized Christ with their 'sensus Catolicus' much like how so many of us describe our reactions to the Novus Ordo. We just "knew" something wasn't right and that the Church couldn't be that way. As for your comment about the Resurrection of the Church as yet to occur, I agree that the Church will be somehow vindicated near the end of the world, somehow. However, I don't hold to the opinion that the Church will be restored to Her previous state (as I think some are expecting). Perhaps this expectation of the Church's restoration to Her previous state would be compared with a "Resurrection of the Church"?
      As stated in the podcast, I am convinced that the Church has already been resurrected and we are living in those times. To underline my opinion about this, I like to reference the expectation of the Apostles that Our Lord was going to restore the Kingdom of Israel (which would have been a restoration of Israel to her former state, presumably as it was under the Davidic kings). This is directly comparable to the expectation of some Catholics. Instead of the restoration of the Church to Her previous state, I would instead opine that we would instead enter into the eternal Covenant with God in Heaven.
      But, of course, this is nothing to assert. These are just my thoughts. I appreciate yours very much!

    • @cantatedomino584
      @cantatedomino584 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@maccabeanuprising Fantastic! It’s good to understand now why you used the term “period of the resurrection” to indicate our current time. And I thank you for not being “doctrinaire” about your opinion. None of us know exactly how God is going to vindicate His Church after Her horrible desolation, and after Her suffering the terrible altering of Her visage. We have to wait for God to show us in His good time. Nevertheless, I always enjoy listening to the opinions of other people on this subject. I am of the opposing school, if we will call it that; but I would never try to argue with someone that I am correct. We wait, and in the meantime, I thoroughly appreciate your efforts, and will be scoping your website. Please keep it up!!

    I want to hear more about “the cup” #11. I grew up with this cup in the NO and have to say there was a lot I didn’t understand. Before we were lead to the true church, our NO had a weekly “mass” class. I had picked up so many books on the NO mass and never understood it. I told my husband, “Ok, this is it! We finally get to have this ‘mass’ explained!” We went to four classes and this is what we learned.. there is stained glass, a table, carpets and so forth are in the church; the church is built in a half circle to represent community; the church is built like an upside down ship(???); the mass is built in two parts, the liturgy of the word and the liturgy of the Eucharist. In other words, I learned nothing, which is what I had learned my whole life about this “mass”. Imagine doing something your whole life, trying to find answers about it your whole life and then finding out it means nothing. Imagine it… Then there is this map. I’m not going to lie, this makes sense to me. This has meaning, but it also means nothing to me because God wants me to learn far more important things. But we also need to be aware of this because… I don’t want to say it’s true… but it does have meaning.

    • @maccabeanuprising
      @maccabeanuprising Před 7 měsíci +1

      Well, to honest, I don't have too many thoughts on the "cup". But I don know that the Church, very early on, denied the Precious Blood from the Faithful, in order to safeguard the Blessed Sacrament. Much later on, in the rebellion of Jan Hus in the late 1400's, those heretics wanted to bring back Holy Communion for the Faithful in the Chalice of the Precious Blood, and again this was roundly denied by the Church. So, even though we know that the Novus Ordo right is most likely invalid, still for the Novus Ordo hierarchy to bring back the chalice was a clear sign of rupture with prior Church disciple and perhaps, teaching.
      All that is in that Novus Ordo chalice was just the "fruit of the vine" and not the Precious Blood. And at the last supper, Our Lord said He would not drink the "fruit of the vine" until He drank it anew in the Kingdom of Heaven. To be honest, I don't know how they directly relate :(

    • @karamichele9981
      @karamichele9981 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@maccabeanuprising Thank you for the history. I suppose the rupture with previous church teachings of bringing back the Chalice would agree with receiving communion in the hand. Now I see it is a double offense that I was not aware of. As a long time NO participant, here are my thoughts on that particular topic… in the NO marriage is equal to, or some might say, above the priesthood. Receiving the cup, receiving in the hand and the faithful handing out communion take the task of the priest, making the faithful equal to, or some might say, above the priest. They have been slowly tipping the balance in more areas than most might know.

    • @maccabeanuprising
      @maccabeanuprising Před 7 měsíci

      Yes, I have often thought the same exact thing, and wondered about it in terms of the parallels with the Gospel. I don't understand how they would fit into this system of parallels. Now, to shift to the Old Testament / Church History parallels, I can "see" those rites more clearly. For just as there are other valid rites that aren't Latin, so to did the Jews have many other related tribes. Just like the Latin rite, the Jews had become the prominent, and the primary tribe that remained by the end of the Old Testament and so too with the Latin rite. Anyway, I appreciate your thoughts!

    With regard to the wearing of white: the Tridentine Pope coming down from the Alpine mountain, as a type of the Transfiguration of Christ, consider that during our Lord’s Passion, He was sent to Herod, who clothed Him in a “white garment,” of entirely different signification: “And Herod with his army set Him at nought, and mocked Him, putting on Him a white garment, and sent Him back to Pilate.” Sent Him back to be denied and condemned by both Jew and Gentile. This is the white garment of foolish insanity, and also of imposture; because we know that Herod demanded of Jesus a miracle, and Jesus remained stone cold silent; as if He were not really what the reports declared of Him: “And Herod, seeing Jesus, was very glad; for he was desirous of a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things of Him; and he hoped to see some sign wrought by Him.” Is not this fool’s white garment the sign of the false claimant to the Papacy?

    • @maccabeanuprising
      @maccabeanuprising Před 7 měsíci +1

      I see what you are saying. Perhaps it can be viewed this way, in line with your thoughts above.... Even when our true popes would wear all white, it never was that they always and only wore all white. They would also wear the beautiful and ancient vestments (of which names I am woefully unaware). But the anti popes, stripped down the traditional dress, and each one (with the exception of B16) wore less traditional dress than their predecessor, until we come to Francis who wears only the "fools garment" or the white garment of "imposture".
      I just looked for Catholic commentary on this passage of Sacred Scripture and wasn't able to come up with too much. However, your analysis of the "white garment" of Herod seems solid to me, since it is unlikely that Herod had noble and true intentions by dressing Our Lord in all white. If Herod's intentions were true and good, he would have freed Christ on the spot.

    • @cantatedomino584
      @cantatedomino584 Před 7 měsíci +2

      @@maccabeanuprising Indeed, Herod dressed our Lord in the garment of an idiot or insane person, primarily to publicize his verdict - for Herod indeed tried Jesus in the fullest juridical sense of that term. Herod judged our Lord to be an imposter, and the sentence was made public by the fool’s clothing. Herod is an interesting type in himself, for he symbolizes both Infidelity and Apostasy, the Infidelity of the Jew and the Apostasy of the Gentile. Herod was, in a sense, both a Jew and a Gentile: Ruler of the Jews (and, I’ve heard, a perpetual proselyte), and Ruler, who was a Gentile. It all points to the end times Passion of the Church, and a great imposture, the sign of which may be a “fool in white.” Once again, thank you for giving us so much to consider!
