Some old lenses produce a beautiful glow wide open that would go well with your portrait shots. The Minolta MC Rokkor 58mm f1.4 for example, the later version with knurled focussing ring.
There's a certain feel with vintage lenses when you handle them that also makes them a joy to use - something modern lenses don't have and it's all because of the fully manual behaviour of them. As for other lenses to try, you could always try to get a hold of a Fujinon 55mm f2.2. It's a 4 element lens that produces bubble bokeh and it's pretty cheap. Downside is that it's difficult to find one that doesn't have cracked focus ring (it was made from cheap plastic) and it's soft wide open. Fun bubble bokeh though. There's also the Olympus Zuiko 50mm f1.8. Cheap, compact and it's definitely a decent lens to use, even nowadays.
This is the only lens I shoot with. I really like the feeling in the process and the resulting picture 🙃I love vintage lenses, I have a whole small collection of them.
The old Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 58mm f/2 lenses are great (and tend to be better built than the Helios). Someone else mentioned the Tomioka 55, and I'll second that, along with Mamiya lenses of the same era. The Minolta 50mm f/1.4 is nice and sharp, but the bokeh of the earlier Rokkor PF 58mm is much nicer. Another solid choice (though tends to cost a bit more) is the Canon FL 55mm f/1.2 - great bokeh, wonderful colors, and reasonably sharp for its era.
Olympus 55 F1.2 is the vintage lens of choice for me. Something majestic about the images from it and not to mention the resulting 4K video when used on either a Panasonic G9 or A7 III
Great video! I have a large collection of vintage lenses and use them for most portraits and anything I want to make look artisitc. There are so many reasons why they are better for some things. The Zeiss Biotar family is one of my favs. If I am storm chasing or need quick photos i.e photographing a sporting event I used modern lenses.
I have this lens and got a few years ago to go with my Fuji X-H1. I love it. it is either this or my Fujinon 16mm f1.4 are my favorite lens. The images are beautiful. So far I do not have any issues with skintone or yellow. Excellent video and photos!
[A warning about eye safety below...] Since you know about the radioactivity, you've obviously decided you're ok with the safety of it. That's fine, different people online have different opinions about whether they're ok with its safety. There are many discussions about the comparative levels of radioactivity involved, which are easy to find and read, so I won't go into that. However one thing I've read is that unlike your body which has its skin, your eyes have no protection against radiation. So if you're ok with handling and using radioactive lenses, I believe it's still dangerous to hold them up to your eye to look through like you normally would do with lenses when checking for dust, fungus, haze etc. Something to keep in mind, or research for yourself.
I would recommend to try lenses that have an awesome vintage look, but are actually new lenses with electrical contacts and manual focus. On top of the list is the Voigtlander 50mm f1.2 Nokton. It's got an amazing romantic vintage lens look. Trust me, it's definitively worth a try!
You should definitely try the Helios 40-2 85mm lens! The swirly bokeh it gives especially on an 85mm focal length is so ethereal and it's miles better than the cheaper Helios 44 58mm ones.
I will recommend you trying the Tomioka 55 1.4 ;). It is made in many different brands like Porst, Chinon, Rollei, Revuenon, ... more than 10 if I remember well. Earlier versions has amazing swirly bokeh much better than the Takumar and the Helios. Another but more expensive - Minolta Rokkor 58 1.2 MC - in my opinion the best(or Top3) Portrait 50mm from its time and maybe today.

Yep, I mentioned that towards the end of the video. I've been working on my own texture packs which I love using to take the digital edge off some photos!
I also have one of those SMT 50/1.4 and it is soooo soft at 1.4, so I am definitely looking into getting a different lens, maybe the Helios for that specific look.
Try the old Canon FD glass I use a 50 mm 1.8 Canon FD lens on my Sony A7 original and the results are nice and very vintage looking… I have also an advice for you Try to buy like Red or Blue or Yellow filter for any vintage old lens and shoot black and white You will be surprised with the results It’s highly recommended Me my self I like the Blue Filter It gives this low contrast look which is very moody and elegant
As a vintage shooter and collector, this lens does not have coating. I love this lens, but I hate the lens flare. I would be curious to see how well you would do with a Minolta 58mm 1.4 or Jupiter 3 50mm 1.5.
Love the vibes. have you tried the TechArt LM-EA9 Leica M to Sony E Autofocus Adapter? As there are Adapters from basically any Mount to Leica you could make almost any Vintage Lens now a Autofocus Lens.
Up 500 g though. Depending on how well the old lens works with the adapter, the eye AF will even work. I'm having fun seeing which of my old lenses can be used with this adapter.
A bit of flares is ok, but most vintage lenses need a lens hood. Even with the hood some lenses produces some beatiful flares. I buy cheapo plastic screw type hoods

Well, my first camera was a MINOLTA X-700, but I don't know, if there are adapters for the MD-system available. My personal dream-lens back then - I love available light!!! - was the standard 50mm 1.2. I only had the 1.4 to begin with. One thing about many of the vintage lenses is the build-quality, they feel just so solid. And heavy, come to think of it. Whatever you choose, please make more of these videos... :)
I'd be interested in you using lenses like a Tamron 300mm f/2.8, something where you get "character" but also a focal length / aperture way out of reach of relatively affordable autofocus lenses.
Did you use focus peaking? I even used Focus magnification on my very heavy Helios 40 1960 (85mm - f1.5). As you can understand, this is very awkward for a model. I see you shooting a walking model. Then again, I guess I will give it a try on my lighter lenses like the Carl Zeiss Biotar 58 f2, Helios 44 M, ... and some others. Did you know you can also adapt old projector lenses without aperture control of course, using a cheap helicoïd?
Ive got a Helios lens but struggle using manual focus as my eye sight is appalling .. great to use vintage lens for video too & you can get some great looks
I really enjoyed using my Helios for a photoshoot too! And I've been meaning to use these lenses for video which I haven't yet. Maybe something new to try this year :)
Great video 👌 I’ve used most of the vintage glass and the best is the yashica auto yashinon 5cm and it’s made by tomioka co and the colours are absolutely stunning and I’ve used the lens your shooting with and although it’s ok but the radiation coming from it is way too high on my meter!! And please don’t use it on the camera with your eye to the view finder😳 and keep it in a safe box in your shed because it still emits a lot of radiation and the danger of dropping the lens and breaking the glass 🫣 and the yashica lens is not radioactive. I think the best lens for your Sony camera would be the voigtlander 50mm f1.2 nocton it produces stunning images
@@bngr_bngr I’ve measured the levels of radiation and it’s ok if your going to use the lens once a month for an hour but I still wouldn’t put my head near the lens upto the view finder and my radiation meter was going crazy when placed near the lens at about 6 inches away and it was at a dangerous level!!!
I personally would only ever use a camera with dual card slots for wedding photography. I used the A7III for wedding photography for a few years as well :)

@@adrieltzu3565 Minolta have a slight tint? I haven't used them but Justin Phillips did a great CZcams video on them. The only vintage lenses that I know for certain didn't use thorium are later models of Leica and Contax Zeiss. Nikon AIS also don't but early AI lenses did.
This is only lenses with thorium added to the glass, and it is mostly a very low level.... If you had the camera up against your face all day it would likely be equivalent to getting an x-ray or two. I agree it's something to be mindful of but not worthy of a dramatic warning
@@strippedlistno one says that about keeping it in the garage… that would be the worst place as you’d have fungus within a couple of weeks or you’d need to constantly change your dryer packs. Any video that tests the radiation shows that you can’t pick it up after a few inches
@@heroaomedia this guy is crazy dumb, the video he/she refers to is from Simon utak and his conclusion was that no radiation while 3 feet away and a huge reduction while attached to a camera. This guy's conclusion had all the available data but couldn't even comprehend it

Yeah Julz, you're right! If you have a M42 adapter, definitely look for a 135mm Tair 11a, this thing is insane.
They're quite expensive now. I'm sure there's a Tair with 19 or 21 aperture blades but not sure if it's that one

The vintage soft focus look can be done, also, in the post processing of any raw or jpeg using the photo editing app’s filter and template looks.

Leave that lens under UV light for a few days to clear up the browning from the radiation. I've done it with several other thoriated glass lenses.

OR you can use the TTTartisans and avoid radioactive lenses and adapters that are PITA. BUT a good job with the golden nugget of tips in this vid
Which adopter is good for vintage lens ?
I use the Pentacon 50mm f/1.8 with my Fuji XT-3.
With some film grain and film emulation lut it will much cooler look.

Yes Dan uses the A7sIII in crop mode for all our CZcams videos with that Sigma lens.

What was white balance setting?
I probably had it around 4900K or something similar. But since I shoot raw, you can adjust it afterwards in post.

Just a warning that some vintage lenses are weakly radioactive because of an element called Thorium. Just check and make sure it's not one of those.
This is one of the most famous ones. But you can’t rely on lists. All Minolta have thorium and it’s not on the lists.
